First time I ran the benchmark in Shadow of the Tomb Raider after installation on my MBP 14" M1 Pro I got 13 fps on high at 1080p. I thought my Mac was faulty. The second time I got 45 fps as it should be. I got similar result in Metro Exodus so I do believe it's something about running the game for the first time. Rosetta kicks in the first time you start an app and I suspect that the app itself is compiled but there may be other assets that are not directly compiled before they're used? I'm not sure but that was my experience with the games the first time.

I ran it again, its actually worse than I though. The game seems to be locked at 30fps now, no matter what settings I choose. There are also people complaining about the same thing on twitter. Disappointing. I have requested a refund for now.

Yeah, I’m starting to regret I only took 256 GB on my M1 iMac.

I used to love Rome Total War. So maybe should give it a try
Glad to see these kind of games heading to Apple Silicon Macs (I’d love to see games like this come to the M1 iPads)
Don't you have external drives? Even I do have some for my MacBook Air.

Same Ultra settings?

That is, odd, to say the least. No in game frame cap?

Nope. Feral suggested to disable vsync but it’s already off. Not to mention that it’s a 120fps display. Could be they messed up the usage of VRR APIs.

BIG DISCOVERY! Andrew Tsai discovered that in this case you have to have your Mac connected to the charger to get good frame rate. Only on battery there will be a 30 fps cap in the game:

Compensating for Intel's poor battery power management makes this a very authentic port. ?

They really should put a notice up for that. Or make it a selectable option in game.

Ah. That’s what I get for benching games on my lap while sipping coffee. I do remember that the numbers were higher yesterday when it was plugged in.

It’s not a stupid feature. Even with energy efficient Apple Silicon gaming will drain the battery in less than two hours. But this should really be a setting, and there should be a notification, because it’s unexpected.

Yep, should be a setting. Gimping battery performance on Intels is expected, but not on Macs.

I got an answer from Feral: "The framerate cap when not connected to mains power is an intended feature. This matches the behaviour of the original game on Windows, and has actually been a feature in Total War games for several years across both Mac and Windows laptops."

It would be good though to make a note about it since it's an unusual feature on Mac otherwise where we all are used to get the same performance regardless of using battery or power adapter. As a long time Mac user I didn't know about this and I'm sure there are lots of new Mac users and Apple Silicon adopters that are unaware of it, since many have complained about it. There is a big risk that people try the game on their Macbooks and feel unhappy with the low frame rate with battery and ask for a refund without knowing that a power adapter would solve their problem.
