Dutch 2 Japan 2. Dutch were ready to implode in that game. Their temperament under pressure is always suspect.

I agree with you in general, but I don't think that is what happened in this game. Coach decided to take out well-performing players like Summerville and Gravenbergh in favor of all defensive players (and an unfit and slow Depay).

Basically he decided to park the bus before the game was won.

Spain - Cabo Verde - WOW
Half-time and still 0 - 0
Cabo Verde’s goalkeeper 💥

I ♥️ these nations and matches - hang in there, you can do it.

Right now Cape Verde’s government is debating just how tall Vozinha’s statue is going to be…

By rights Spain should be up 4-0, but God is with Cape Verde today. Hope they can keep it up in the second half.

On this, I'm afraid that we differ to some degree.

Well, that I certainly expect! 🤣

To be honest, I really don't care what happens to USMNT in the abstract. I'm too annoyed by the bigger picture to get down to just enjoying the tournament. It's lost to me.

BUT - there are some decent young men in that squad doing their best and taking advantage of a rare professional opportunity. They didn't create this situation and don't deserve to have that taken away from them, so for their sake I wish USMNT the best.

It’s a beautiful story. Sparta against the Persian Empire, Cabo Verde against Spain. We love a good underdog story.

But this confirms one of my pet theories, true team spirit and effort is bigger than the sum of its parts. These guys have played together for a while, with a local coach, not some big name dude parachuted in for the event.

I wish Netherlands had some of their team spirit.

The new format is a real double-edged sword. It creates the potential for massive upsets (like this, and congrats to Cabo Verde!), but also for very lopsided results of giants squashing minnows (Germany vs Curacao for example).

Just watching Belgium versus Egypt. Some decent players on the pitch. But the best thing about those games is the kick off time. 8pm is about perfect in the UK.

One of the things I’m missing is usually in the evening during a World Cup there is a highlights show, with the highlights from the days games. But it doesn’t really work when the games are played throughout the night.

The biggest enemy of the dutch is their temperament. They always lose the head.

Not sure that is true. I agree mentality is their weakness, generally, but I wouldn’t say they lose their heads. Their comeback against Argentina in the 1/4 finals of 2022 was a impressive display of resilience.

Isn't every sports tournament use the same format? Top seed vs lowest seed, 2nd best vs 2nd worst and so on. They don't want the 2 best teams facing each other in the first round. No way they put German, France, Brazil and Argentina in the same group.😏 Looking at the bracket, you can guess who's going to win their respective groups.

Yes, but it used to be a much smaller group getting to the tournament. Now someone has decided to just bring more countries to the party.
