In the lead up to the iPad launch, a number of leaks have revealed some of the iPad App Store launch titles. While popular iPhone games such as Flight Control and Real Racing are amongst the first group of apps, one of the big promises of the iPad was that productivity apps would be able to make further use the iPad's extra screen real estate.

Apple's iWork applications Keynote, Pages and Numbers are known to be making the jump to iPad. Meanwhile, OmniGroup also pre-announced that they will be delivering their 5 of their productivity tools to the iPad.

We can now report that Filemaker's Bento is also launching for iPad and will be available as a launch title. Bento is an easy to use personal database system that was originally released for the Mac. Filemaker has already released an iPhone/iPod touch version that was well received. A screenshot of the iPad version is provided here:

Like the iPhone app, Bento for iPad can be used as a standalone app or will wirelessly synchronize with Bento 3 for the Mac. The App comes with dozens of ready to use database templates that can be customized for your own usage. The iPad version of Bento is priced at $4.99, the same as the current price for the iPhone version.

Hmmm, i'll have to check into this more.

Every time i'm ready to buy BENTO, i hit a limitation. Last time it was that you could only sync to one iPhone from a DB on the desktop. Which obviously didn't mean that my daughter and I could both be looking at the contents.

I thinking though that the forms portion of Numbers will do all I need at this point....

So... Spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, and database apps available from day one. Yeah, this thing's a toy.

Programs like this one get me excited about the iPad. Even though I probably wouldn't buy this particular app, it showcases how valuable a tool the iPad is going to be.

Not only that but, I think we also must be reminded that:

- No Flash
- No eInk Screen
- No User Replaceable Battery
- No Windows Logo
- It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken
- Bill Gates Confirmed It Totally Suxors Unlike A Cool XP Netbook
- Only a dupe would pay for expensive, overpriced chocolate when you can have 2x as much mockolate for the same money. Yum, oily, powdery mockolate.

I keep trying to justify a reason for Bento. Maybe this will finally push me over the edge.

If I can figure out how to set up a database to allow me to input patient statistics, this will help me with my medical degree and I'll certainly pick it up.

Standalone and good for education/business

The iPhone app is standalone. I am certain the iPad app will be standalone.

This is good news for Apple in it's desire to sell iPad to businesses and education. Students will be able to catalog their notes and materials together more easily. Business will get the expanded benefit of Bento over the standard Mac OSX apps.

Good News!

Good for teaching

I can see myself using this for tutorial notes, attendance lists and so on with my university students though I still prefer Filemaker Pro over Bento on the desktop.

I like the desktop version of Bento enormously, but the iPhone isn't nearly as useful because it's very limited in how you can look at your data. That screen shot suggests that Filemaker has created something that very nearly reproduces the desktop experience on the iPad. That really is something to look forward to.

On the other hand, desktop Bento only syncs with one device, I think. I assume that means that you have to choose to synch your data with either your iphone or your iPad?

Bento for iPad

is nice to see

but filemaker pro

is more useful to me

.......

PS Glad to see Arn writing articles again, I almost thought Eric took over the company, it would also be nice to see Marianna contribute more.

Is that right? Mmm.
Sharing Bento files between users is its big weakness. I know the latest version allows limited sharing but it requires you to be on the same network and in my uni we're all assigned to slightly different ones for some reason. It needs something a bit better for it to be taken up more widely I think.

I use Bento to store all of my client information (and there's A LOT.)

This is what I was waiting for on the iPad. Still probably going to for 2nd Generation though.

You Should Check!

Before you go to Bento on the iPad, you should check if it has a certain limitation. I use Bento on my iMac and looked into getting the APP for the iPhone. The problem there was that it did not link up to my iCal on the iPhone. That's a real limitation for me as my database is as much a scheduling app as database, so I need things I update to the Database to update on my calendar. On the iMac, it does it seamlessly and elegantly. However, since it doesn't do the same on the iPhone, it is not worthwhile for me.

So, make sure everything you want it for on your Mac can work on the iPad.

I'd like to know more about this Patrice Morgan. Is she attached?

No, but I think she's airbrushed. :)

That said, she also goes by the name of "Ann Johnson". If your eyesight's good, there's a phone number too.

Joking aside, I've never seen Patrice, Ann, or whatever her name is, but I was immediately able to recognize her on a random webpage after just glancing at her image here. Interesting.
