does the seagate firmware issue with mac pros affect these, or has it been resolved?

aw heck with it. I am getting one or two now anyway and then the OWC Mercury Elite!

seems like a nice pkg that way yea?

1.5 TeraBYTES!

WTF I will do with all that I have no clue.......:D

I can never keep the new configurations straight. is SATA the same ribbon cable as an IDE drive?

I have a 160 gig drive in one of these just now but would love to put the 750 in if it would connect

IDE is a 'Fat grey 40 pin cable' 'SATA is a thin red 6 pin cable'

If the box says ATA/100 on it then its IDE.. if it says SATA 300 and if you got a SATA 150 card then hard drive will automatically clock down to 150 speed

150 relates to 1.5GB transfer speed .. 300 relates to 3.0GB transfer speed

It's actually 150/300Gb(its), not GB(ytes), per second. This would be .15 or .3 in the notation you've chosen.

Mac Pros can hold up to 3TBs at the moment, and I am sure that will be 4TBs when the new 1TB drives are more readily available.

Actually, you can get 6 drives in a MacPro, if you're willing to give up the second optical drive bay:

There's actually 2 more SATA channels available on the motherboard.

You can put 8 drives in, but then you have to remove your DVD drive and add a SATA PCI card.

In theory, you could have 8 TB of hard drive space and use an external FW optical drive.

Having very little idea on these things, I'm assuming that I could make a set up using this drive and an enclosure that would work with my MBP. If so, then I'm also assuming that the enclosure would come with the necessary cables, etc. (I do know that I would have to get a SATA compatible enclosure). Am I on the right track here?

So, could someone suggest a decent firewire enclosure that would be compatible with this drive but wouldn't cost quite as much as the ones suggested so far? Or is it foolish of me to try to save some bucks on the enclosure (i.e. does skimping on $$ = destined for trouble?)?

One last thing that I've already suggested before, could the MR people in the know put together a decent entry on external drives (including building them and where to buy) in the guides section? I think it would be very helpful and may prevent duplicate threads on this particular topic.

Thanks!!!!

Would it be possible (easy enough) for me to buy the 750GB drive and put it in an external enclosure for now, then put it in the Mac Pro when I get it? If so, what external enclosure should I pick up?

Why on earth would you want to do that? Just wait till you get your Mac Pro -- the drives are always coming down in price. If you need the storage now, by all means get it, but don't predicate this on your future purchase of a Mac Pro.

Because I need a backup drive now, that's why I was considering doing this. I think I might purchase a 500GB drive for now, and slot that as a Media/Data drive into the Mac Pro when I end up getting it. For now it will be useful as a backup drive.

Should I pay the extra $80 for the 750GB now? Or get the 500GB and see what happens for more drives when I purchase the machine?

Like I said, drives are always coming down in price and larger ones (1TB) keep coming out. So unless you really need 3-4TB right now, just buy enough to fill your current need and expand as you go.

That's crazy, thanks for the info :). I never knew that, hmm opens up a couple of new options for me.

Thats great thanks; might have to get one.

That is the price specific to the hard drive caddy you are looking at (prices probably depend on size and bulk, so ram shipping costs are a lot lower for example), there are different levels of posting as well. I simply chose the cheapest option available to give you an idea.
