well, i just tried it and i have to say, i'm loving it so far
i've rented the Hitman (a film i've wanted to watch again but didn't really feel was worth the cost of a newly released dvd)
however, probably because everyone is downloading at the same time, it's taking it's time to download

however, i don't care - the reason i'm sold on the iTunes movies is that there are NO crappy trailers at the start and NO compulsory anti-piracy warning

it really annoys me that i pay money to buy a DVD and then i'm forced to watch a stupid trailer telling me not the buy a pirate version. whereas if i download a pirate version, i don't have to watch that stupid advert
so honestly, even if it doesn't work out cost effective, i'd rather purchase movies to watch on my appletv than buy them on dvd, if i means when i hit play, the movie will start without any pre-amble

Of course, it is possible to buy the DVD and rip only the film content from it minus all of the adverts and trailers etc... But it's whether or not you perceive this to be worth your time to do it vs the cost of it via iTunes.

24 hours

"With iTunes Movie Rentals, once a movie is rented, it starts downloading from the iTunes Store directly to iTunes or Apple TV, and users with a fast Internet connection can start viewing the movie in seconds. Customers have up to 30 days to start watching it, and once a movie has been started customers have 48 hours to finish it — or watch it multiple times." - from Apple PR

48 hours to watch the rental, is this an increase on the rental expiry times in the states?

In the states its 24 hours.

thought i would give the service a whirl.

i decided to rent a movie but then thought the selection was poor, i decided on Stardust, but then to buy it was only £3 more, so i bought it.

Clicked buy, within a couple of minutes (quite literally) i was watching the movie whilst it was still downloading in the background, the 1.4gig took approx 35mins to download.

Quality was very good i thought, enjoyed the film, only thing is i think £4.99 would have been a vastly more attractive pricing structure.

For the odd download I guess the price isn't too bad. I've not got any other rental service setup so if I really wanted to watch something £2.49 - 3.49 is fine.

Is your dvd a digital copy? Can you watch your dvd as soon as you hit the buy button?

This depends on your broadband speed and for those whos ISPs impose a download cap, a few of those 'digital copies' would... well you figure it out besides a DVD is a digital copy.

Can you load it onto your iphone/touch without ripping? You are paying a convenience cost, really.

Copying over to an iPod is really nothing new, ripping from DVD is also nothing hard these days. For £7 or more for a film that you must download at a cost to bandwidth that you might end-up burning to DVD anyway for permanent storage, you would be better off with Amazon.co.uk or Play.com.

at those prices ...

i'm hoping Australia stays iTune Movie free.

"Cheap Tuesdays" sees many video stores offering under $2 rentals on new releases. Very popular given the number of empty cases on the shelves that night.

Geez, you can BUY a DVD or BluRay for almost those prices (if you shop around). And then you can play them anywhere. Or rip em.

We can't even get ASDL2 in our area (shocking since it isn't like "out in the sticks" and I know I'm not alone with our bickering telecom companies delaying rollout and creating frustration) so I'd hate to think how long they'd take to download a full HD movie.

Handbrake is working just fine for me... (well the Mac version is, the Windows version seems quite a bit less friendly/usable but perhaps the programmers are making a point there <g>).

i'm quite disappointed that you can't rent or buy movies via Front Row. I've got a Mac Mini plugged into the TV, this means i'll have to plug a mouse in when i want to rent (or do it via screen sharing from another machine)

Apple should add this feature to Front Row, and add YouTube too while they're at it

Its good to see the service finally coming to the UK, but I certainly won't be using it as its offering nothing new.

It needs rentals for a reasonable price or HD content I can use on my mac.

Sorry Apple, but no cigar.

not sure if this will happen cuz they want you to buy an aTV

That has to be the stupidest thing i've read on these forums. As an Aussie that just frustrates me. Having movies (no matter what the price) is better than no movies at all, for the Australian film industry and for the general public. I will be amazed if you try and argue this point because I don't believe you truly believe in what you said.

Sorry, that post sounds really angry. My bad. Carry on.

5.1 Surround Sound?

The reason I buy DVD's is for the 5.1 surround sound.
Is this encoded into the download?
If it isn't, then it seems to me that you are only purchasing half the experience.

Odd...

Just digressing a little bit from the pricing talk, but how did the movie studios decide which movies are for rent, which are to buy and which are both? By the looks of it Paramount are to buy only, but I can't work out the others. In particular is 'The Princess Diaries'. The first one is rent and buy whilst the second one is buy only  Also, how did the come up with the release dates? It's not the release date of the movie theatrically nor when it first turned up on iTunes. Is it the DVD date or something? This is the same with music, which is rather annoying

I'm staring at my apple tv and can't for the life of me see where I'm supposed to buy the films from! My film menu doesn't have any purchasing option, just trailers and myfilms?:(

I downloaded the Assassination of Jesse James yesterday and watched it last night but it seems as though it's going to expire in 1 hour's time. It would seem that it is incorrectly set to expire after 24 hours, despite the fact that I live in the UK and the terms and conditions clearly state that films will expire 48 hours after first watching. Fortunately, I've already watched it but this is not very satisfactory

Sent them an email: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/store/buy_troubleshooting/#form

(P.S. Would you recommend the film?)

£10.99 for new releases and £6.99 for standard movies are fantastic prices to enter the digital distribution of movies market here in the UK! I understand that there are those complaining about those of us living in the UK pay more than what those of us living in the US do, however, that's down to the VAT we have to pay in the UK and the sales tax that one has to pay in the US.

I'm extremely excited to finally see movies available to purchase from the UK iTunes Store and I cannot wait to start renting! (And buying of course!)
