Apple today announced upcoming updates for Final Cut Pro, with the iPad and Mac apps set to gain new features that Apple says will streamline workflows.

Final Cut Pro on the Mac will be updated with organizational refinements like automatic timeline scrolling. Users will be able to keep their clips in view during playback, with the view able to be adjusted using keyboard shortcuts or the Zoom option.

The organization of the timeline will be viewable at a glance, and it will be easier to differentiate clips by assigned role using distinct colors. Apple is also adding tools for cleaning up complex timeline sections and fine tuning edits by combining overlapping connected clips into a single connected storyline.

On Apple silicon Macs, exporting projects in H.264 and HEVC will be faster than before as Final Cut Pro is able to send video segments to available media engines for simultaneous processing.

On the iPad, the updated version of Final Cut Pro will include voiceover capabilities that will let creators record narration and audio directly into the timeline with the iPad. In pro camera mode, stabilization will now improve shaky footage for smoother video, and there are new options for combining connected clips.

Editing is being sped up through new keyboard shortcuts for voiceover and grouping clips, plus there are new color-grading presets and titles.

The new versions of Final Cut Pro will be coming to the App Store later this month and they will be free to existing users. Final Cut Pro for Mac is priced at $300, and Final Cut Pro for iPad is priced at $4.99 per month or $49 per year.

Finally automatic timeline scrolling? Please Please Show the waveforms and thumbnails as it scrolls. The most irritating thing I have about FCP is the scrolling of the timeline while it plays. Constantly starting and stopping so I can have a glance of the audio and visuals coming up.

This definitely was in FCP 7. Very long overdue.

I suppose it's too much to hope that this option becomes available for Mac. As a novice I'd happily pay a few dollars to "try it out" for a month or two, but I can't justify hundreds for something I'll rarely use.

Edit: It seems from the responses that I didn't word that very well (only 4 hours of sleep last night!). I'm not looking for the 90-day trial, I just want something I can use once for a few days, then come back to again a year later. It's rare that I need to edit things, and I don't really need much more functionality than what used to be available in QuickTime Pro.

Maybe I should try to learn Resolve instead...

How about allowing the user to set which screen is primary and secondary. Especially valuable when you have more than two displays.

How about real color grading.

How about better work with log.

How about actual, competitively good tracking?

How about AI rotoscoping made easy?

How about better processing of speed changes?

How about better stabilization?

How about better flow transition.

Ahh… how about a real-world, editor-grade NLE!!!

There’s a trial version.

Better quality with smaller file sizes would be more important than always being faster (IMHO).
Will probably continue to encode on the CPU with x264 and x265.

Ah nice! Back in sync with 2011. What about better colour management and grading? Audio controls? Or something more niche, the ability to ready guro data from camera files and use it for better stabilisation 🤤

There’s a trial version.
The problem with the trial is that after 90 days I'm back where I started. I can't just pay to use it for "arbitrary" months.

Edit: I'm assuming that the 90-day trial expires 90 days after installation. I've seen trials that only count a day if you actually use it that day, but those seem to be rare.

Editing on iPad is Hell.

iPadOS has too many limitations.
What does iPadOS limitation has anything to do with the Final Cut Pro app? It's hypocritical to try and criticize iPadOS in this scenario when Apple is attempting to update a "Pro" app for feature parity with their desktop app.

A comment like this is from the same people who criticize Apple for the lack of Pro apps.

It does, but you can just delete the app and redownload to start another trial.

The reason Final Cut Pro on iPad is a non-starter is simple: once you start editing a project on the iPad you can't continue on the Mac... UPDATE: it appears they are adding a way to export an iPad based project back to the Mac version. How seemless is this remains to be seen but that's a solid improvement.

FCP is an app I keep wanting to love but I still miss the Final Cut Studio days. Once i found DaVinci it’s been hard to get the motivation use FCP.

I own FCP but never really learned how to properly use it beyond simple home video edits having come from iMovie. I am finally ready to invest the time to really learn the program, with an emphasis on wanting to learn using LUTs and color grading but I know DaVinci is far superior for that at least. It makes me wonder starting from such a new user perspective what I should really invest my time in learning...

They will close the gap between the iPad and Mac versions of FCP and Logic Pro, and maybe reach feature parity someday.

These apps are frustrating to use because of the limitations of the operating system — poor file and window management.

For me the best reason to own a Mac.
Unfortunately I am stuck on a late 2012 Mac Mini, but my truth remains. I love FCP.

Poor file and window management? In what way exactly? Not saying you are wrong... but I'll like to see some examples of the issues you are having.

I use File Browser Professional app, it's more feature rich compared to the Files app. And for window management, Stage Manager helps me in that department especially with an external monitor.
