Things like this make me think that the current version of the Suite will be support alongside FCP X for a time.

That would certainly be nice...

As long as Color (or at least its functionality) is still around and I can continue to freelance with it, I'll be open to the idea of updating. I'm actually in the early stages of setting up a long-form doc. Hopefully more info will roll out soon, so I can decide on whether to do it in FCPx.

I don't understand the fear of change, if you don't want anything to change, don't ever upgrade your software?? What's the problem?
tru dat. I know a few post-houses that are still running Irix :)

Honestly, I wouldn't. If Apple really is trying to get people to think of FCP X as a version 1 product I wouldn't want to use something like a long form doc to test drive it. With regards to Color... at least there is the Baselight plug-in and DaVinci Resolve as affordable alternatives. From what I've read Resolve 8 got a lot of thumbs-up at NAB.

Do you have the Get: Dialog Search software? I haven't used it yet, but based on what I've read I don't think I'd consider doing a doc in the future w/o it.

We're starting to use PhraseFind on our Avids at work and it is pretty useful. However, the stuff shot for this doc so far is all in Japanese :D... just going to have to rely on transcripts for the rough cut.

Yeah, I've been wanting to move to Resolve for the past few months. All of my freelance color work is coming from FCP editors. I'm comfortable with the Color roundtripping, so I haven't had a huge motivation yet to make the change. I'll definitely download Resolve Lite on launch day to give it a spin. I'm glad they've added OpenCL support so that I can transition my hardware over slowly instead of plunking down for Resolve+2 nVidia cards right away.

People are very exited about this price cut. I am not, because now Apple has to sell way more of them to keep it as profitable, thus time will be spent making features that will draw people in or it will be spent on other things entirely.

I see Apple making MUCH more money off of selling it at a lower cost to more people, then selling the entire suite at a higher price to a select few. I think it will fuel more people to get into professional video editing and more Mac Pro sales.

While I see all these complaints Apple is not into Pro software & Machines, I think this is a good decision by Apple to compete in the professional market.

Might want to hold off on that plan.

Hi all, when we release 8.0 in June we will have an updated config guide and a number of these questions will be clearer then.

OpenCL is GPU based, not cpu, and in the iMac and Macbook Pro configs we demonstrated at NAB we used the one on-board ATI GPU. If you are building a MacPro, you can continue to use the ATI cards BMD have previously identified for the UI GPU, but for image processing the Nvidia Quadro 4000 with CUDA is still the performance GPU for image processing.

The NR is only available on CUDA so its likely users will want at least one CUDA GPU for the image processing to get this amazing feature.

It is a good business decision by Apple but, at least at first blush, it looks like Apple is expanding by going down instead of up and that's part of the source of concern and disappointment from many current users.

Heard the same thing before the first iPad was ever released. But it is wildly popular.

That analogy doesn't make sense. The iPad isn't positioned, nor marketed, as a direct replacement for anything else Apple makes and I don't think anyone has speculated that FCP at $299 isn't going to sell. The question isn't "Will this sell" the question is "To whom is this geared towards" and based on the very brief preview many people that use FCP on a daily basis to make a living have are nervous and rightfully so, IMO.

Sorry for the n00b question but does this mean Motion is dead or they'll sell is separate to the FCP package?

No one knows. Apple reps specified that the preview was just for FCP X and info on the other apps will come out in the future.

Personally Im hoping for the long rumoured ShakeMotion 5 (Codenamed "Phenomenon") - since now they would have the same version number, and well, it would be nice to finally have a true replacement for my aging copy of Shake 4.

weak... oh well, I'll just hold off on getting my Tangent Wave (hoped there'd be a v2 @ NAB) for a little bit longer and get the nVidia cards when I move to Resolve. I've decided I have to make the move regardless of what Apple ends up doing. The jobs I want to go after tend to be with the DaVinci crowd.

I thought the MP would freak out if you mixed GPU brands...

have you ever set-up two cards like Nvidia Quadro 4000's?
Ive been thinking of testing out the 5870 and 4000 on one box for a cheap DIT station but havent found time to test :p

My statement was geared towards someone else's post that it would not be profitable enough for Apple to sell at a lower price.

While the first iPad hardware is different from what was currently being offered, it is an extension of & still based on the current iOS system. There still is some similarities as far as hardware, such as touch screen & similar processor ect.

Then when the new iPad was out some were upset it was based on iOS rather then Mac OSX wanting a full desktop operating system.

The Motion developers are still employed and working on something to be released soon.
Even though I live and breath AE, I would still like to see Apple further the Motion/Shake soft :) And if its anything like the new Compound Clips and Timeline...well thatll be enticing ;)

But what about the rest of the suite?

hoping they upgrade the rest of the suite. I've got Studio 2 since I got it with an EDU discount and couldn't upgrade it, but I love having it in the same program set from start to finish; everything from Motion to FCP to color to DVD Studio Pro and compressor. I use it all as part of my workflow. it would suck to upgrade only one component and leave the rest sitting dusty on the shelf.

Any ideas if this will run on a new MBP 13 inch or will the more powerful 15inch mbp be needed?
I know that the full specs haven't been announced yet, but just wondered if I missed something!

That's what my fingers are crossed for... Shake/Motion hybrid FTW

@LethalWolfe Thanks, I suspected that may have been the case though couldn't find much info...

Everything I have read about the NAB event was that it was strictly about FCP and nothing else. Just because the don’t talk about the rest of the suite doesn’t mean anything one way or the other. Apple specifically said to Jim Dalrimple of the Loop insight that they were focusing on FCP in this event. Just focusing on one product at a specific event isn’t meant to imply anything about other products that they don’t talk about. It was a sneak peek even from Apple’s perspective and not even a formal announcement like what Apple would talk about at their WWDC keynote or the annual iPod/iPhone announcements.

Yep it was an Final Cut Pro Users Group meeting :)
It was my first and I tell yaa it was crazy.

I haven't... only single GPU setups for me. I'd probably go with a GT120+4000 combo.
Ive seen some frankenstein setups using multiple GPUs on the PC side but never heard of it on Mac.
I have a few 5870/5770 lying around here so Ill eventually try it.
