Final Fantasy games (really, turn based RPGs in general) are one of the few types of games that I don't mind playing on a touchscreen. You're mostly just tapping through menus and text anyway, which is actually easier on a touchscreen. I played through all of FFVI and IX on iOS devices, and would probably get this one too if I didn't recently play through it on my Switch.

I bought FF8 new on release day, probably like 1998, along with the strategy guide because I loved FF7 and logged a ton of hours playing it.
FF8 was boring, the gunblade was pointless, the card system was stupid and I never bothered to finish the game. Story wasn't memorable enough for me to retain any memory of it, I think I stopped at like disc 3, something about Edea (was that her name) and a ship? Ghostship? I don't remember the plot at all.

FF 8 is one of the most LETDOWN video game, for me personally, in history. FF 7 was so damn awesome. When FF 8 came down, I woke up early that day and went to pick my preorder in the store..went home and played the next 15 straight hours..the first disc was very good..however beginning 2nd disc on it’s starting to sucked so bad..overall the story was dumb, mechanic of the game also dumb..graphics did look improved over FF7 I give them that..FF9 returned with a smash hit but graphics returns to cartoonish..now I’ve retired from video gaming..too old. imho, once you reach 30 years old, you shouldn’t play any more video gaming.

I stopped playing video games when I was like 16, skipped PS2 and PS3. Finally bought a PS3 in like 2015, played the Uncharted series, Mass Effect trilogy and a little Gran Turismo. Bought a PS4 and a bunch of games I barely played then fell back into having little interest. I like a good story driven game but I don't see much value in gaming beyond that.

wow back in the day, i remember buying some other japanese import game because it had a demo of this game included. I played that demo around 20 times.

this game has not aged well...

Ok so 30 is the age someone should stop doing what they enjoy and makes them happy. Got it.
Also, as we get older (I mean far beyond 30) it can be pretty good for the brain to play some cognitively challenging games. In fact, I think the interactive part of gaming is much better than some seem to think – especially when comparing to watching TV series, or movies.

Reminds me on Monkey Island.
Beautiful game for ipad.
Payed for both 1 and 2 but revoked from the app store (gone money) after LucasArts withdrawed the games.

Even with a backup is was unable to recover the games.

This was, by far, my least favourite entry of the series and the last title in the series I bought. It's also the only one I had that I couldn't be bothered to finish.

FFVI was the best.

I was told repeatedly that IX is an improvement, but after VIII I couldn't be bothered.
IX is intended to be like a big throwback to the first six games (it was actually specifically designed as a nostalgia trip to contrast VIII's realism), but it also ends up having probably one of the best stories and payoffs in the entire series, probably up there with VI. If you liked VI that much, you should definitely consider IX if you ever feel the urge to play FF again

An absolute favourite of mine. Purchased it on release day back in 1999 as a teenager. I also purchased it just a few weeks back on the Xbox.

Whilst Final Fantasy 7 is rightly the best Final Fantasy game ever Final Fantasy 8 is not far behind at all. The storyline was great and to this day I still listen to the music from the game from time to time. It had the better musical score over Final Fantasy 7.

In terms of the iOS release I'm not sure touch controls will be as good. It was clearly designed for consoles and I still believe thats the best way to enjoy it. Also with the remastered versions of FF7 and FF8 on consoles you have the three extra "cheat" options which allow you to boost movement speed, have instant limit breaks and turn off random battles. Wonder if these are included in the mobile version too.

Great memories, I still have the original PSX game. However... This remaster is better than nothing, don’t get me wrong, but the extremely blurry backgrounds make me sad, and I would rather play a version with upscaled backgrounds, even if it’s using AI, like the mods of the FF IX. But on iOS/iPadOS we cannot run emulators, so I’ll wait for a remake of this great game, if it happens at some point. In the meantime, I will play remastered mods of games I own, on an emulator on my mac.
You are right the AI tech exists to upscale these backgrounds. I wonder how long it will take to trickle down. “Two Minute Papers” YouTube channel has shown this being done and it’s amazing.

IX in my opinion was a pile of garbage lol I played it for a few hours and just hated it and couldn't get into it. I immediately sold it off the following day.

After the realism of the previous two games to revert back to that childish look really annoyed me. Also if I remember correctly and I may be wrong, only certain characters could perform certain skills. For example, only that little wizard looking creature could cast magic? The only thing I like from it was the song Melodies of Life.

Thankfully they returned in FFX with realistic character models again and haven't gone back on it since.

Prior to 7, that's how FF is, each character has his/her own class/job, so it requires strategy on who you pick for your team. That's actually how general RPG works.

Im 35, stopped actively playing videogames around college at 21 (traditional hardcore gaming, as I always have one or two casual games on my phone, etc). Recently Ive been trying to get back at it -and failing-, maybe I dont have the time, attention span or dedication to fully engage any more, usually play two hours at most and leave the game for months untouched. I recently bought the Metro trilogy, then grabbed both Death Stranding and The Witcher 3, I havent even opened them once. Im sure with enough dedication I might be able to enjoy them, its just that, between work and life, usually my time off can be served by short videos on YouTube.

I don't even watch Netflix/Prime/Apple TV+ even though I pay for them...

... time to get rid all of those Pay TV subscriptions... save time & save money..

Is it downloadable on M1 Macs?
There are some apps that will let you export the ipa from your iPad or iPhone to your Mac, like iMazing. I exported FF7 from my iPad to my MacBook and was able to install it on my m1, runs great! Not sure if it’ll work the same with FF8 though.

I've been enjoying this on Switch, especially the ability to speed up time. I don't have the patience to watch the GF cut scenes over and over anymore.

I will be complete when they bring back Bioshock to the app store. Believe I lost it in the 32 to 64 bit transition.

I think I could give it a try on an iPad. Also quickly browsing saw that there are tons of final fantasies, from I to VII, even tactics and others that I never heard of.
However, none of them say anything regarding controllers support... for me these games need it, anyone knows if they have it?

So I purchased it, just to support SquareEnix in releasing more of their games, old and new, on mobile platforms.

The FMVs and pre-rendered backgrounds don't age well, especially in the days of full HD screens. The characters with high res textures look more jarring now, even more compared to the original PC version (which was already jarring when seeing the higher res character models with the low-res pre-rendered background). The characters' faces look great though. :D

With the memories, come also the annoyances of FF games in that era. Randomly sweeping through all the edges of the pre-rendered background since there's no clear indicator where you can/can't go, randomly tapping A on everywhere in case there's an interact-able object or secret items, good stuff... 😂 Can't wait until I get to the ultra annoying card game... what did I put myself into?

Especially since you typically have much more disposable income at that time.
Much more disposable income? Yes, I definitely do have more of that now. "Disposable time" is what I lack.
I am 41 now and will gladly play old games over newer ones because necessity dictated that they usually didn't have all this unnecessary fluff to appease people that foolishly think you need to get hours of gameplay for every dollar spent. Or worse, you have services like Apple offers where you get the same cookie cutter boring permutation games for $5 a month.
Also: FFVI was the best game of the series for so many reasons. FF7 was just pretty colors and eco-emo angst. Chrono was the best FF that never was because Square had the good sense to realize that it was so different from the FF brand that it wouldn't make sense to lump it in with the others.

Some video games are cognitively challenging, but that's really rare. Even RTSs are more about learning how the game itself works and getting the muscle memory right than they are about actually devising new strategies.
