Open your own mind. Android gets the second most amount of press but it is definitely not the second best mobile OS. WebOS is better in every way. Android is 3rd best at most, maybe even 4th depending on how good Windows Phone 7 is.

Windows Phone 7 isn't out yet, and most countries don't have WebOS devices available. I have yet to see and try one so I can't comment on it.

The Evo use in this country is damaging our society. We need to pass tougher laws to get these users behind bars and out of society where they belong. Until then, say no to Evo.

Would it be possible for MacRumors to annotate the user names of Evo users?

This thread demonstrates some perfect examples of why Apple users are widely regarded as the most snobby, closed-minded arses alive. You (the, uh, general you) act as though having choices is a bad thing. So the crap what someone likes their Android phone? Why don't you get on with enjoying your iPhone if it's so bloody brilliant and stop trying to ego-stroke and self-justify your purchases by pissing on everyone else's. Newsflash - different people have different priorities and preferences. If this flusters you then I suggest you get a grip and get over it.

It has a perfect form factor though. The screen is big, but the phone is only slightly bigger than the iphone. My girlfriend has one. Its still very pocketable and it fits my hands better. If there were a progression of design that observed how the EVO compared to the iphone pushes the receiver towards the top of the phone while making a thin space at the bottom for buttons, there is room to go a little bigger. I don't like Android, but there are some great things about the EVO. HTC did a fantastic job with it.

Pure Android phones such as the Nexus One, are very nice alternatives to iOS devices. The form factor of the EVO is nice.

However Google has basically bowed to carrier pressure and is allowing Verizon, Sprint etc. to alter the operating System, reducing advantages, turning features off in favor of arguably inferior and more expensive carrier versions of the features etc. Google no longer sells the Nexus One direct to consumers.

So now you get a hodge podge of Android OS versions and phones available, and the carriers get to put whatever junk they want to on them. A very non-Apple like experience. This is all part of an effort for the telecom companies to not become a simple pipeline of wholesale bits. They want to control and charge premium prices for those bits.

I want to see a strong Android alternative free of carrier control. It does not look like things are heading that way at present.

There is a lot of really cool stuff on android - such as the degree of customisation, growl compatibility and freedom of app creation that can lead to some real innovation - some of which may even find its way onto the iPhone.

The phone is not a computer. Approaching it with the mindset that it is supposed to (or should) work the same way a computer does is the #1 reason why Android sucks and why every single piece of machinery coming out of manufacturers other than Apple sucks donkeys balls. Folders in Android have the X at the corner of the window to close it. Are they for real? Null thought went into designing this thing my man. 5 hardware buttons on a multitouch screen? Sheesh.

It might sound harsh but what The General said is very accurate: Piss poor software on piss poor hardware.

To put it kindly android is a little to struggle around. My friends have android phones because their parents won't let them have an iPhone. Anyways I was playing with their phone and I knew how to do thing they didn't after 1 year with that phone. There are many "extra steps" that iPhone doesn't have though

He then boasted about how he has a 8MP camera. I said that is cool, but I saw a couple comparison videos, and the iPhone 4's cam is miles better. He didnt believe me.

He continued to make remarks that he could "convert" me to Android if I wanted. I told him I like the phone, but I honestly prefer mine. I think he is in denial that there are some problems with his EVO.

Open your mind.

Boom! I automatically win this round. Who's next?

Good hardware is that which looks beautiful, is built well (and by that I mean it doesn't squeak when I squeeze it, isn't made of cheap plastic materials, etc) and performs well. Beauty, quality and performance do not exist with any existing android phone.

There's no place for people who /really/ like or dislike Apple products on Mac Rumors? I think I'm being trolled here...

No, you haven't convinced me to switch to Android. Guess that means I'm a closed-minded, biased, Apple-loving douche bag.

I'm okay with that.

My Nexus One is beautiful, well built, doesn't squeak when I squeeze it, isn't made out of cheap plastic, and performs exceptionally well. Which proves your argument wrong.

I'll jump in -

You're hardware may be alright, but the software that runs on it BLOWS.

You, good sir, win the thread. I actually owned a droid for a few miserable months before I moved to the iPhone, and I know what it's like. The Android OS is pure ***** - it's laggy where it shouldn't be (swiping between screens on the freakin' HOME SCREEN? Come on...), hideous market implementation, and an important part that people overlook, zero iTunes equivalent to allow you to back up your phone locally or even rearrange your home screens easily with a mouse.

I'm not sure you are countering my argument. I stated that I though some parts of Android were very good. Other parts, however, are terrible. I love my iPhone and have never been able to get to grips with either Android or RIMOS (never seen a palm device in the wild). I also like that the variety of hardware available means that various users can get what they want from the device rather than accepting a single design and (inflated) pricepoint.

Ok, I for one agree with that. All android phones, without exception, are cheap looking and ugly. They may have an 8MP camera sticking out the back, but I dont want some big plasticy pimple on the back of my phone. Apple really do nail it on design every time, leaving all the other brands looking cheap and nasty

You've never owned an Android phone then.

I am an Apple guy but I love my Nexus One. Say what you want bout hardware and clunky U.I but my phone is built very well without the cheap plastic and whatnot.

I honestly don't like the type of person that buys an Android phone. I have some friends that have dumbphones, but if someone is going to spend a sizable chunk of change on a smartphone and doesn't spend it on an iPhone, then they are not the kind of person that I want to associate myself with. They make really bad choices.

If you are judging people by what type of electronics they have then i suggest you get some help. You should chose who you would like around you based on their personalities, not what phone they have.

and how do android buyers they make bad choices? Its nice we have the phone police like you around who can insult people when they buy something they want.

The feeling's mutual.

Not sure what kind of devices you are using but I've never lagged between homescreens, there are ways to implement iTunes with an Android device (coughdoubletwistcough) and the market place, while cluttered, provides more than enough of the essential apps a smart phone owner would need (Angry Birds is coming, need I say more? lol). I like on my Android phone that I can customize the U.I, buy from more than ONE market place, have the option of more than one media player yadda yadda yadda. There are pros and cons to the "no rules" regulation of Android but I think its great regardless.

Note: People actually complain there are 5 hardware buttons on the front? Are people that stupid or lazy not to use them? I like the iPhone a good deal too, but there is quite a stink of cynicism in this thread.

Please tell me you're joking. For some people, the Android platform suits them best, no matter what you think. Not associating with people who don't use an iPhone is absurd.

This is exactly why his credibility has hit rock bottom by making ridiculous statements like that.

why are we comparing in the first place? they are like apples and oranges, how do you compare those?

Open your own mind. Android gets the second most amount of press but it is definitely not the second best mobile OS. WebOS is better in every way. Android is 3rd best at most, maybe even 4th depending on how good Windows Phone 7 is.

In my opinion WebOS is the best mobile OS, followed by a tie in 2nd between iOS and Android. I hope HP is able to do more with hardware than Palm was.

I like my EVO.

It's not perfect, but I've get it setup just the way I like it (which I'll admit is far from the way it came) and I am happy with it. I rely on it heavily and it hasn't let me down!

Would I trade it for an iPhone? Not sure. I would certainly consider it, and an iPhone would complement my otherwise Apple-centric setup at work.

Just for kicks, here are some things I really like to use my phone for, and please note that I'm sure many, if not all, of these things are possible on an iPhone as well (they may even be better) so don't take this list as a comparison between the phones:

- Syncing data to Google Apps
--- Contacts, SMS, Calendar (work and personal)

- Syncing images to Facebook and Flickr

- Nandroid (saved my ass plenty of times)

- Rooting, and custom ROMs

- Tons of free apps

- VNC client and server

- Google voice (hooray for disposable phone numbers!)

- Full access to the filesystem (again, because I rooted mine)

- Multiple web browsers with some nice features (though Safari would be nice)

- I LOVE the UStream app!

- WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB tethering

- VPN is invaluable to me for work

I feel the need to state once more that I am not comparing my phone to an iPhone. I am not interesting in arguing about any of the above features, just sharing a brief list of some of the things I like to do with my EVO. :)

From my limited WebOS experience, I think you're right. It's just that it happens to be on crappy hardware. I can't stand slider phones. Moving parts WILL break on you or get loose. And that Palm keyboard sucks donkey balls. If you have bigger than 5 year old kid fingers, I can't type on that thing at all. And then the screen is way too small.

If you could put WebOS on something like the Moto Droid X, then you'd have a pure winner, fo shure.

I disagree that ALL android phones are cheap and ugly. I have looked at the Samsung Galaxy S Android phones, and those are really nice looking phones, with great screens (Super Amoled). That being said, I don't like the Samsung UI, I prefer the HTC UI. Just so happens, the HTC ones are the ugly phones, compared to the iPhone 4 especially.

I was seriously considering a switch to the EVO, for several reasons, such as money, Sprint's all in one conclusive plans can not be beat, $79 for unlimited everything (basically, unlimited calls to cell phone on any platform, who calls landlines anymore ?). And I looked at the EVO, liked the phone a lot. Then after the iPhone antenna debacle, I was close to switching back to Sprint (had Sprint from 1998-2007). Then, I started reading about the problems the EVO was having, too many problems to list, so I decided to stay with the iPhone.

Got my iPhone 4 last Thursday (Sept 16th), and I am very happy with it.
