Find My IPhone has been a Lifesaver for Me 2X!

Find my IPhone has saved my 2 devices, iPhone and IPad both on 2 different occasions. I am certainly glad I had this app installed on my IPhone that was stolen. Tracked it all day, locked it, beeped it, and finally was able to recover my IPhone in a ditch on the edge of town. Lost my IPad yesterday and used the Find My IPhone to track and recover it today. App has definitely save me around $1,000! Thank you Apple!

Apple has updated its Find My iPhone iOS app with the ability to display driving directions to the lost device's location.

Find My iPhone is a free service built into iCloud. It allows users to lock, find, or erase a lost or stolen iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.
Find My iPhone is a free download from the App Store. [Direct Link]

Here's how I'd like the service to work:

If I lost my phone, I should be able to use Find my iPhone to lock the phone, prevent anyone from shutting it down.

If the person attempts the 10 tries to unlock, then it should first ping its current location to Find my iPhone, then perform a personal data reset so if they do eventually guess the password, no one can access my important stuff. At anytime after the reset, it prevents being shutoff and constantly pings its location.

The only way to 'recover' the lost/stolen phone is to enter the passcode that is given by 'Find my iPhone' which would be automatically generated.

I used find my iPhone (iPad) because I couldn't remember where I left it in my house. Luckily the blue icon showed it being in the corner of the house so I was able to find which room then use the sound to pin-point it. It ended up being under a pillow.

Flawed Concept

There are so many flaws in this app:

1. You can't lock the phone from being turned off. Of course someone who steals an iPhone is smart enough to turn it off right away! You should be able to disable the "power off" function.

2. The ability to track a phone's location history in "lost mode" is worthless if you don't put it in lost mode right away.

I left my iPad (wifi+cellular) in my rental car tonight. Because I didn't realize I had left it until a few hours later, by the time I got onto iCloud to track it, it had been turned off. I logged into my Verizon account and saw that the data had been used for a couple hours after I lost it, so Find My iPhone could have been tracking it that whole time. Really, it's stupid that you can't see the location history until AFTER you put the device in "lost mode".

Evidently this feature was added to the 2013 line of MacBooks

I just noticed it... I went to see how it works. Apparently its on my MBP.

AWESOME!

Find My iPhone is useful, until they shut your phone off

Useless if they shut the phone off or take SIM card out. Mine was stolen here yesterday in Taipei. Trying to find that MTF!!

Sometimes I have found location to be off as far as a block. This will vary from iPhone to the other.

Technically speaking, Apple is almost always referring to this feature in the sense of the phone being lost/misplaced, rather than stolen. In that sense, what's the downside of going the extra step and giving you the option to see driving directions to the location where your phone is if you have lost/misplaced it?

Now, if it has actually been stolen, well, that's slightly different, but at least the marketing intent of the app is for lost/misplaced phones.

Also, Apple buyers are smart. We would never think of confronting the criminal(s) who stole our device. We would always call the police. We are smart that way. :D
