adk - I had a similar problem with shirts being too baggy around the middle, although I certainly don't have the length issue that you do. As you pointed out, most shirts made in the US are marketed to the average American male who tends to be a bit overweight. Rather than going bespoke, the most cost-effective solution I have found is to go with English-made slim-fit shirts from online shirtmakers. I have generally gotten shirts from T.M. Lewin or Charles Tyrwhitt for about $40 or $50 shipped including sleeve-shortening.

I don't know whether length will continue to be a problem, but they do offer a 3-month unconditional guarantee, so it's worth a try:

"We want you to love our products as much as we do but if you don't then you can send them back to us within three months of purchase. Our three month guarantee is unconditional, so you can send the item back whether you have worn it, washed it or the dog has chewed it. We will be happy to offer a full refund or exchange it for another product. We don't refund the original post and packaging charge but if you just want us to exchange the item then you don't pay any postage for the replacement."

I can agree with the poster above. My shirts that are not tailored are T.M. Lewin slim-fit shirts and they fit just about as well as the custom ones. They are high quality and great shirts, especially for the price.

Wow, necro! :p

I just received my latest order of tailored shirts -- so far I had only ordered them in white, but this time (3 for 2 sale, I think it came out to about $120 for three shirts), I ordered one white shirt, one French blue shirt with white cuffs and collar, and one cobalt blue shirt, all with French cuffs. I'm really actually impressed with the dyed fabrics -- I might try another colored shirt the next time I order, although I'll probably be due to replace some whites.

It all depends. If your body fits fitted shirts, then more power to you. For me, it's not an issue of brand or cost -- fitted shirts are still only fit on a couple of dimensions, and they just don't fit me, even if they're expensive. If they fit you, then there's still a big difference between a good fitted shirt and a lousy one. But for me, tailored shirts are the best luxury ever for me!

I don't wear dress shirts that often, but the ones that I own make me look like I borrowed them from my older brother.

I wear a 17 1/2" Neck with 35" sleeve - a size generally equated with a short, portly gentleman. The only problem is that I'm 6'2" and weigh 190 pounds and frankly, I look like crap in my dress shirts. They're too short on me so every time I sit down they become partially untucked, and the shirt is far too baggy around the middle.

Any ideas for finding a shirt that (a) fits and (b) isn't ludicrously expensive?

Ha. I have the same problem.. 6'3", 175. i wear a 15.5/37. That size simply does not exist.

My advice, try out fitted shirts from JC Pennys. They're decent quality at an affordable entry-level price. Get a feel for how you like your shirts to fit then go from there.

Get measured at your local tailor and order some tailored shirts from a good tailor in Hong Kong (I would recommend Jantzen Tailor). Your shirts will cost anywhere from $40-50 each depending on the fabric and buttons. Shipping will be $6-7.

I've done extensive research on this and I'm confident that this is the best way to go.

All Express shirts Ive tried on fit perfectly....they dont make it look like ur wearing a bag like most shirts.

email Phil. he knows alot about collared shirts.

Try going to Mens Warehouse. A bit pricier than Macys or JCP, but better merchandise and a bigger selection.

Yes, they will measure your neck and arm length. And their shirts are reasonable.

Once you have your real measurements, you can order shirts from pretty much any place.

Unless you get a fitted shirt, the length is often correlated to the sleeve length. A 35" sleeve does sound a bit on the short side for a fellow of your height.

I thought I was big at 19 (19.5 if I'm going to be wearing it while playing).

I wear a 22/38. The part I find frustrating is that even if you go to a big and tall shop, it's more like a big or tall shop - they think you can be big, or tall, but not both. So most shirts are something like 22/35 or 18/38. There might be three of my size in the whole store. I tend to order a lot of my dress shirts. ;)

im also quite an odd size and going to topman for me worked a dream... i always have such trouble with shirts but just a plain ol medium size (they werent properly measured... sounds weird) and it fit perfectly :) good luck!

I see this is an old thread but wanted to second the recommendation for custom-made shirts. My husband is tall but very very skinny (it's not my cooking, I swear!) and has an impossible time finding shirts that are long enough for him but not baggy. We've gotten him a couple of shirts from www.cottonwork.com and have been really impressed. They range from $60 to $150, depending on fabric and which options you choose.

Jos A Bank "tailored" shirts will look good but only buy them when the price is around 25$ or so. Visit StyleForum for tons of info on clothing.

Men's Warehouse. End of story. Completely the only men's clothing store that needs to be in existence. They will help you out.

Never said you did, in fact I know you didn't, because I reported the spammer. :D

It's very easy to fall into this trap, as many here will attest to.

All Spammers must hang. :)

I still stand by Men's Warehouse. Last time I stopped there I dropped $1500 in cash. A suit, 9 shirts, 9 ties, socks, the whole 9 nine yards. :)

As a poster pointed out last year, Brooks Brothers is the only place to go, especially for dress shirts.
