Does it have to be 4k. Will this work with the m1. I got it in november for my 2014 mini.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. The only thing seem to be the anti-aliasing not working with low PPI displays, so text isn’t as sharp as a 4K 27’’.

Thanks for the reply. Just web and email. And maybe some youtube. So its good enough.

So I've noticed this on my LG monitor - the light lines on the right edge of the monitor next to the bezel I don't know if it's the backlight, but it's not a good sign for the long-term build quality.

The picture quality is great, but this and the issues with having to scale for Windows is making me seriously consider returning and getting a 27" QHD monitor instead, probably a Dell. I've got 48 more hours in the returns window to decide...

windows doesn’t scale well ?

Well, Windows in VMWare. And also some games I play on Steam. I’m having to keep changing the scaling in Mac OS which isn’t a deal breaker but is irritating.

I’d decided to keep it despite this issue, but the light bleeding through the side is a bigger problem.

At the price it cost return it !

But I’d keep 4k resolution ;)

Hmmm.. I was literally going to purchase this monitor tonight....

I am so overthinking this though. My PC has a generic 1080 monitor. My Mac is for home use only (maybe a few simple games thrown in), I'll use my work laptop for all my PC work....

Ok ...?

Having too many computers isn’t good 😅
You always end using one more than the other.

So, weirdly, this morning it’s gone away. Luckily I have a photo, as I’ve now sent a request to return to the store I bought it from. If they take it back, I’ll have a think about what to do next whilst using my old, cheap 1080p monitor.

If you had it to do all over again, would you get the LG or a QHD monitor?

(again, this is my first Mac - so the only retina screen I've seen is on a phone. My home monitor is 1080 (27 inches) and so is my work monitor. So I may not notice it as much)

I’m not sure. The 4K does look fantastic, so if I was in Mac OS 100% of the time it’d be a no-brainer.

The issues I’ve encountered are:
  1. I work from home via VMWare Horizon, remotely logging in to a Windows machine. It does display 4K, but only if I change the resolution of the Mac to ‘look like‘ 4K, which means everything is tiny. So switching between windows is irritating. It’s obviously not a deal-breaker, but enough of an annoyance to ruin the experience a bit.
  2. I do play some games on the Mac, and some don’t work so well with the 4K resolution. I also have a gaming PC (currently awaiting repair after the motherboard fried itself) that I’m going to attach to my monitor and that definitely won’t push 4K as it has an old GPU, and as I don’t play AAA games I have no plans to upgrade this. Gaming is secondary to work, so again not a deal-breaker, but changing the scaling before and after playing a game is annoying, and I have the same issue with switching between windows as I do with VMWare.
  3. The issue I posted above with light leaking from the bezel, which seems to come and go. Not an issue with the panel, which looks great and I’d be inclined to put this down to me receiving a dodgy unit and/or being more fussy.
All that is to say that my potentially changing to 27” at 1440p is due to some specific issues and requirements. If you’re not using Windows or a virtual machine, and/or don’t mind regularly changing the scaling to use different apps or games, then you’ll love a 4K monitor. It does look great - not as good as an iMac or my iPad Pro, but that’s partly due to those being glossy finishes. You won’t find a 4K glossy monitor anywhere...

Thanks! That helps a lot. My needs are pretty simple. This will be purely a home-use computer replacing a PC. I may do a bit of work on it, but my work PC laptop will be the daily driver for 99% of my work. Any games I play will be pretty simple stuff (Sims 4 etc.).

Since all I have is a 1080p PC laptop that uses a 1080 work monitor. I have the same resolution at home I really don't know the difference yet. (it was like growing up 'poor', I didn't realize I was poor...because we had what we had and it was just fine.)

My main attraction to finally making the jump in the Mac arena after years of phones and iPads was the idea that things 'just work'. I want a monitor that looks nice and that I don't have to worry about changing the settings, rebooting, or washing out when I run a program.

I think I'm probably overthinking it a bit, lol. The LG27UN is in my target budget and seems like it works well with a Mini. I get that it's going to scale. But it doesn't seem like it's a big issue....

Thanks for sharing your experience.

You should be fine with a 27" 4K monitor. Scaling works brilliantly in Mac OS, and it will look great scaled to either 1440p (my personal preference) or 1080p. Text is razor sharp, and the other thing I really noticed when moving to a modern display is how rich the colours are. My old monitor (a basic Samsung S24F350, 24", 1080p) is a perfectly good budget option, but using the LG is like night and day, both in terms of sharpness and colour.

One slightly odd thing that highlights the difference for me. The Mac OS wallpapers which are all swooshing colours just look incredible on a modern IPS display running at 4K. On my old monitor they are washed out and grainy.

27 inch 1080p must be atrocious...
I'm sitting about 500mm from three P2719H that I have been using at work for over 2 years now, and I am still perfectly happy. In fact I was so happy with them I ended up buying a P2719H and a P2719HC for at home last March when I started working from home most of the time.

I'm a mechanical design engineer working in CREO almost all day long, but use MS Office, Chrome, Edge, etc as well, and it doesn't bother me one bit. I'm also running Windows 10Pro on a Dell Precision 7720 if that matters.

If I was a photographer or worked on movies, or on a Mac I suppose it might be a different story.

Well, as a programmer, my 24“ 1080p is already pixelated. Can’t imagine a 27” at the same resolution. But if it’s fine for you, then, it’s good !

I tried my 2018 Mac Mini with a 54" TV via HDMI and it worked very well indeed.
Sadly the people running the shop would not let me steal the TV.

Wish I’d found this thread last night; it might have cut out some agonising over buying a new monitor.

I’ve not actually got my planned Mac Mini yet (waiting for MM M1s to appear on the UK refurb store and BA e-store to increase Avios rate on Apple store), but needed a decent monitor for working from home prior to buying it.

My plan is to use USB-C for my or flatmate’s Windows laptops and then connect the Mac Mini via HDMI or USB-C/displayport. Hopefully, will be able to keep the MM plugged in all the time and just change input on the monitor.

After much checking and comparing, I settled on the Dell P2421DC which arrives tomorrow (£260 from Amazon). This thread could have saved me a fair amount of time. It seems like I may have made a decent choice though, which is nice.

I didn’t want to spend too much on a monitor as this may well be a stopgap situation, but equally didn’t want to buy a cheap monitor that was a waste of money. Hopefully I won’t regret the compromise.

Deciding on the MM configuration to buy will be the next challenge! Ultimately, I may go back to an iMac but my late 2013 iMac is barely coping now and annoyingly can’t be used as a monitor for Windows laptops either. Not sure if I can link it to the MM when I get it, but am not sure the mix of monitors on my desk will be bearable either.

I have the 49" Dell UltraSharp: U4919DW via USB-C on my new M1 Mini and it's awesome.
No issues to display the max resolution? Maybe it’s finally resolved? Any special cable needed for the USBC?

I see maybe early YouTube review complaining about the M1 mini unable to support max resolution.

nothing special, standard usb c cable that came with the dell monitor. I will say that I leave my M1 Mini running 24/7 as I did my 3,1 [from 2007 to 2013] mac pro and my 6,1 mac pro [from 2013-2021]. so I don't deal with the monitor falling asleep issue but when I do a reboot, I have to pull the cable for 1-2 seconds for it to recognize the connection. i never power nap, screen saver, if I am not using it. this works for me. I had the 30-inch apple cinema display from 2010 to 2020 with zero issues never sleeping
