I’m not sure. The 4K does look fantastic, so if I was in Mac OS 100% of the time it’d be a no-brainer.
The issues I’ve encountered are:
- I work from home via VMWare Horizon, remotely logging in to a Windows machine. It does display 4K, but only if I change the resolution of the Mac to ‘look like‘ 4K, which means everything is tiny. So switching between windows is irritating. It’s obviously not a deal-breaker, but enough of an annoyance to ruin the experience a bit.
- I do play some games on the Mac, and some don’t work so well with the 4K resolution. I also have a gaming PC (currently awaiting repair after the motherboard fried itself) that I’m going to attach to my monitor and that definitely won’t push 4K as it has an old GPU, and as I don’t play AAA games I have no plans to upgrade this. Gaming is secondary to work, so again not a deal-breaker, but changing the scaling before and after playing a game is annoying, and I have the same issue with switching between windows as I do with VMWare.
- The issue I posted above with light leaking from the bezel, which seems to come and go. Not an issue with the panel, which looks great and I’d be inclined to put this down to me receiving a dodgy unit and/or being more fussy.
All that is to say that my potentially changing to 27” at 1440p is due to some specific issues and requirements. If you’re not using Windows or a virtual machine, and/or don’t mind regularly changing the scaling to use different apps or games, then you’ll love a 4K monitor. It does look great - not as good as an iMac or my iPad Pro, but that’s partly due to those being glossy finishes. You won’t find a 4K glossy monitor anywhere...
