So this week, I went to a local book sale and found an unopened copy of snow leopard for 50 cents.

But it doesn’t end there.

Just now I was at my local goodwill and found a copy of iWork 09 for $5. When I got to the car and opened it (to look at the documentation) I found an iMac software disc and a copy of leopard tucked into the documentation flaps.

Am I just really lucky, or is this common?

In my experience not too common, but I've made some good finds at thrift stores in the past.

For example, a month or two ago I picked up a 2007 8-core Mac Pro 2,1 (not a flashed 1,1) for just $35. Missing a GPU and HDD, but I should have extras that will work. Still deciding what I'm going to do with it.

Is the Snow Leopard disc an upgrade or full version? Apple provided, for the cost of shipping, Snow Leopard media in order to permit users the ability to access the App Store. This media contained the upgrade version.

This is a full version of 10.6.3 (pre App Store)

Okay so I popped in the software disk. It’s iLife 09 but it’s locked to the iMac 9,2 and the Mac mini 3,1. I’m going to try and rip the dvd into a .dmg so I can run this on my MacBook 5,2. I can edit the plist there. I could be wrong but I don’t remember iLife 09 running on PowerPC so I won’t try that.

If you're ever my way we can arrange quite a curb side PPC haul.... ;)
That actually would make a VERY good excuse to my wife. "But baby! It was out on the CURB! I mean free! I was rescuing all these Macs!"

Yeah, would go over just fine. My wife is always on the lookout for stuff left on the curb so she can't really say anything if I do it. :) :D

The only Apple OSX Disc find I found at the goodwill was a copy of panther I scored for a couple bucks which I promptly dropped walking in the door. Went to use it a few weeks later & It cracked in the drop.

It can happen but not often. I once bought a boxed set of Cheetah. The seller didn't mention that he was also throwing in a number of other discs in the box, which included full disc sets of Mac OSX Server 1.2 plus the rare upgrade to 1.2, Panther, Tiger, Leopard x2, iLife '08 and a home burnt DVD of Lion. I was more excited by the freebies.

Try away, iLife '09 was a Universal release. Intel only started with iLife '11.

Dude that would have literally had me jumping up and down. And yeah I tried it. I think it’s literally locked to the iMac and Mac mini. I’m still playing with it, but I already own iLife 09 so I’m not really worried about getting this working.

I’m just putting this out there.

I’ve scored a tv, a Xeon desktop that I later hackintoshed, and $50 from looking curbside

:D

I have put OUT more value in items on the curb with the intention for others in the neighborhood to take then I have ever picked up FROM the curb. :)

The $50 I actually found in a storm drain leaving a restaurant. I turned it in, no one claimed it so i scored $50. The tv had a blown cap. After fixing it, it still sits in my parents living room to this day.

The Xeon was the equivalent of a 2006 Mac Pro. I have the system running el cap to this day but I don’t really mess with it anymore

A few years ago, I scored a Mac SE, a beige PowerMac (don't remember the model), an Apple monitor, a boxed copy of Tiger (or was it Leopard, not 100% certain now), some assorted Mac peripherals, and two working Windows XP towers in a lot for $20 at an auction. Another time there, I picked up a Powerbook 165 for $20. I used to work there so I would get first-dibs on all the computer stuff and would strategically place it on the sales floor so I'd be around when it came up for sale.
About a year ago, I stopped in to help them with a computer issue they were having in the office, and they literally gave me a boxed Apple II.
[doublepost=1532965935][/doublepost]EDIT: Oh and on the PC-side, just a couple weeks ago, I scored 8 laptops (sans hard drives and most of the power cables), 1 LCD monitor, about 8 USB keyboards, and 10 USB mice, all for $60 at a yard sale. 4 of the laptops had an i5 and 4GB of RAM, 3 were Core 2 Duos with 4GB of RAM, and the last one is an older Panasonic Toughbook.

Kerbside doesn't work in the UK, sadly. Rains too much. :(

On the upside, a friend of mine has mentioned that where he works might be having an IT clearout soon and they have a lot of old Macs to get rid of. I have first dibs on those.

pavement-side (your are british right? :p ) Can work in the UK, I once found an entire 3Ghz MacPro1,1 sitting by a rubbish bin it was missing RAM and GPU but after Popping those items in from my spares stash, much to my surprise it fired right up :D (most interestingly the side panel is from a MacPro3,1 so wherever it came from they must have more...) (I also once found by the trash an utterly F*cked Late 2009 iMac where the PSU had blown up and taken everything with it, which has yielded nice spares including a working E7600 CPU which lives on in my various PC escapades)

BTW on the IT clear out. if theres a PowerMac 9600 of some kind in that let me know, because I STILL have not been able to procure one...

I take it, you took a punt on one that went the other day? That one fetched a pretty penny surprisingly enough for a weekday auction. o_O

I have no idea what they have as my friend is computer illiterate. He did say they had a lot of ancient looking equipment. I expect mostly PCs and some old graphics equipment on the Mac side. Prolly some old iMacs and printers. If there is a 8600/9600, it's yours the next time I'm in that London.

God no. No room anymore for biggies like that. I was going to message you with a reminder but I would have thought you had your search save alerts on for stuff like that.

do feel free to let me know if you come across anything on ebay and the like :) (I almost missed this one due to the fact its title was "Macintosh 9600" not Power Macintosh 9600 or Power Mac 9600 etc, iv since amended my setup LOL)

and thank you for the offer on the 8600/9600 if your buddy happens to have one :)

I did it again fellas.

Apple USB SuperDrive and Apple TV 3rd gen for $1.

I swear to God I just find garage sales. I don’t plan this.
