A 7 inch iPad would be a no-mans-land device:

Too big to fit in your pocket.
Too small to do anything production on.

What makes better sense is a 4.5 inch iPhone to cater to those who want a slighter larger device. But I do agree that Apple needs to fill the gap between the iPad and iPhone. I'm so used to the iPad that whenever I look at an iPhone I need to squint.

It's not a no-mans land device. I personally don't want one but I know many people who prefer a smaller tablet compared to the 10" iPad. The best way I can put it is that it's a one hand tablet. Most of the uses for the smaller tablet that I've noticed are books/internet/games. The 10" iPad has grown into a much more capable machine for production thanks to the apps but there's a big casual market that would like a smaller (and probably cheaper) iPad. I'm always surprised when I see people rocking the 11" MBA, a computer which I thought was way too small.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I very much dought it when we have seen the supposadly screen and the metal backing... Plus the finger is pointing at the calendar which reffers to the date.. March 7 not the size.

They did release the iPad 2 on March 2nd. Maybe March 7 represents a new 7" iPad. I highly doubt it because Apple doesn't like fragmentation or convoluted product lines, but who knows.

-______-

No. March 7th (SEVENTH). Plain & Simple. If that's the case since the iPad 2 was announced on the 2th shouldnt it be 2 inches long??? No. Keep it 9.7

If there's a 7" iPad, the 7 in the invitation doesn't have anything to do with it.

It's very common on Apple invitations to include either obvious or clever references to the location, time, and nature of the announcement.

The three icons visible on the iPad are a map of San Fransisco, a Calendar entry for Wednesday the 7th, and a Keynote icon.

Come to San Fransisco for a Keynote about the iPad on the 7th.

I don't see them picking March 7th as being some sort of weird sign. It's the first Wednesday in March. Apple likes announcing things on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for press and market reasons.

There may be a 7" iPad coming, really there have probably been 7" iPad prototypes in the works for years, whether or not one is ever released, but I don't think there's anything in the pixels of that invitation to tell us that.

I even think that the people claiming that the invitation shows a sharper screen are going a bit far. The iPad shown in the invitation was probably rendered rather than being an untouched photograph. Remember that the iPad 2 announcement invitation had an iPad 1 on it, not an iPad 2.

You guys are so impatient. Let me tell you why 7" iPad WON'T be released EVER and it's stupid idea as ****.

- useless (not really suitable for reading, calling & stuff)
- there is no need to make one
- it would be a HELL for app developers. Look what's happening on android. You need to make thousands versions of one app to be compatible with tons of smartphones with different hardware, dimentions, resolutions, blah blah blah
- it reminds small htc android tablet and apple is more ambitious than just recreating stuff
- in the past there was never several types of iOS devices released despite of memory capacity

So stop thinking about meaning of that number. Let me explain what this 7 means. A finger is pointing at 7 number on a calendar app, because it is ****ing Keynote on 7th of march and that's it!

think simple.

There won't be a 7 inch iPad:

1) There's not a big enough market of people who won't buy a 9.7 inch iPad but will buy a 7 inch iPad imo
2) It won't cost much less to make, so you'll be paying at least $399 for a 16GB model
3) There's issues with the resolution -- if they use a 1024x768 display, then everything will be a fair bit smaller on screen, making some apps hard to use, but if they use a different display they'll need another App Store, and it's just another device to support.
4) The 7 inch iPad will have less battery life and may even require less powerful hardware due to the smaller size

iThink that the finger points at the 7th march BECAUSE in 1996 1st surface photos of Pluto by Hubble Space Telescope - And because of that - the new iPad is called iPad Pluto!

or maybe its because in 1933 The Game "Monopoly" were invented.. So its going to be a great gaming device...

Well - I dont know, but it seems very possible! :p

Thank you for being a voice of reason against all those who feel somehow threatened by the thought of a smaller sized iPad.

Who are these posters? I've seen a few people say they'd like one, and a few people give an argument as to why a 7" wouldn't make much sense for Apple to make.

I think you just get your feelings hurt when people don't see the need for one, and then project your own feeling of being threatened onto others. The fact that you need to publicly thank another poster just because they buttress your feelings is evidence of this. Cheers!

Waste your time just waste it with some style man.

I wont be on here I will be using my Ipad 3 duh! lol

Yeah... using his IP3 while on MR's.

Wow, now that makes you sound very smart now doesn't it?

They are not necessarily releasing a 7" iPad on March 7th. But they will eventually release a smaller one (around that size).

As I've written here before, it's the same strategy they use with the iPod. Right now the iPod line has a version to suit anyone's needs. So do the computers. You want portable, you got it. You want a machine with a lot of power and don't care about space you got it. Small iPods for running, large capacity iPod for audiophiles and people who need a lot of space. iPod touch if you want apps, but can't or don't want an iPhone. The iPad 3 will be the near perfect tablet solution for most people, and they are conquering the market. That is the time when Apple takes the technology and adapts it to suit others needs - like the 7" version.
