As much as I think its not going to happen, I think it would be an awesome concept on the iPhone. "Touch to unlock."

well it might be a slight step forward in touch technology, so instead of having to type in the 4 digit code each time you use the phone (or whatever setting you have it set on) it just picks up your finger, although some companies will try and make this feature look 'cool' by having a green line behind it that is 'pretending to read your finger' which will take in the end about 5 seconds to unlock, way too long.

also its not as hard as it sounds to copy a finger print if you already have somthing that the own has touched and the fingerprint is on it, such as a glass.

still could be an interesting application if someone was to release it

LOL!!!!!!!

Thanks for the meaningful post. Maybe next time you can add something useful to the discussion, or not post at all.

Fingerprint recognition is not going to happen. Not for a long time. It doesn't prevent theft. If someone steals your iPhone, and then can't unlock it cause of fingerprinting, they aren't going to return it to you. Besides, from what i hear, fingerprint scanners on standard machines don't work to well, and aren't reliable to begin with.

hooray!!! I have my first macrumors fenemy (forum enemy)! and yes I know he wasn't talking to me, but I hate him for it anyway.

WE ARE OFFICIALLY FENEMIES!

um.
you seem to be a little be over-excited about this "forum enemies" thing.
unless it was sarcasm, to which i would say "bravo."

and finger print recognition is not going to happen
considering the its a touchscreen to begin with and would be littered with fingerprints...

Wouldn't fingerprint recognition require a totally different screen?

Different technology we are dealing with here people. That requires a CCD type device to read the crevices of the finger.

the current iPhone can't do this natively and the dock connector is off limits.

however we have yet to see what the new touch screen could do so Gen 2 could verry well sport this feature

Unless...Unless

Yes a Charge-coupled device. It is the device that "images" in still photo and video cameras. Also used in fingerprint recognition devices so it can image the fingerprint.

But maybe (bear with me)...maybe if the screen itself is a scanner, or a (dare I say) camera which has been patented by Apple :apple: and posted above ;) .

This could actually be very useful not only for security reasons, but for video conferencing reasons. IOW, I would find it annoying if I was video chatting with someone who would stare at the camera dot on the side on the phone instead of looking at me, which in fact would solve the problem if the screen was the patented camera/scanner-mabobber-thingy-majig.

Dude... mind passing whatever you've been smokin'.

I highly doubt this version would have a camera built into the screen. In the future, who knows. I am still waiting for my flying car! :D

but is there really any point to it at all?
i mean, the use of a password-lock maybe, but fingerprint recognition....

what kind of stuff do you guys store on your phones?

I doubt this is going to ever happen. At least not for awhile. People borrow each others phones all the time. Then apple will have to make a way to be able to cancel it if something goes wrong. You won't be able to unlock it. Therefore, someone will find a way to do it and be able to crack it. Also, a friend takes your phone for a bit. They can't use it... It would just get annoying. + the technology is multi touch, but not finger print sensitive. Also, you can't even use a stylus which is muuuuch thicker then the line on a finger.

Not for a loooooooooooooooooong time.

WOW. just wow. your ignorance amuses me.

Fingerprint scanning hasn't exactly taken the world by storm.

Windows Mobile / CE devices have had fingerprint recognition for years, using a separate tiny scanner (not integrated into display... much cheaper).

I suppose that if you carried secrets around, it would be handy (PINs or other user entered patterns can be observed by others).

I agree, it's not that difficult a concept. Get a fingerprint reader, like that on a Pavilion dm4, have it next to the Home button, camera, or even roll out with a QWERTY keyboard (iPhone Slide?). It doesn't necessarily have to be screen sensitive like most would expect.

Again, people over-complicate things. Not necessary.

You're kidding, right?

As does yours. He's onto something. Apple has other things to worry about, and even if they started working this very moment, which I doubt to the highest extent, it'd take them much longer than you were thinking. They just don't have that kind of time.

And geez, for this reason, he's ignorant? I would like to see you try and develop such technology under this kind of demand.
