Wow that guys voice is annoying, and he was talking too fast.

Anyway, the fingerprint scanner on the iPhone was a bit inconsistent at first, but with a few updates since it works almost all the time. Very nice feature.

Note to samsung: if first you don't succeed, try and try and try and try again.

:apple:

Mine stops working after a few days also. I've given upon it.

There is a hw problem on some iPhones thAt makes the Touch ID disappear. It happened to me. When you restore, it completely disappears. Apple replaced it for me. I recommend you get the swap done sooner rather than later. Also with 7.1 Touch ID is flawless for me.

Its Samesung's pattern. Rip off Apple, but with poor implementation, sell millions, use a little of the money they make to make the ripped off feature better, continue to sell millions, etc. Its a cycle.

You're probably right because my entire family of 8 has an iPhone 5S and Touch I.D has been flawless since the first time they set it up months ago.

No offense, but anyone who says their Touch ID is flawless is wrong. It's a great implementation - definitely better than the S5 - but it's not flawless. There are many times where I've had to wipe the button first before it would read my print. I can't be the only one out there.

From the video:

Now on the [Galaxy] S5, when it works, it really works well. However, it seems like it's sort of hit or miss...

LOL, what? Which one is it, does it work really well, or is it hit or miss? :)

For the guys having problems with Touch ID in iOS 7.1. For me personally I decided to drain my battery completely a while ago just as good practice to keep the battery healthy. After running it completely flat my battery life has improved BUT so has my performance on Touch ID. For some strange reason it's a lot faster and a lot more reliable. Perhaps you should try it (you could also just try turning the phone completely off for a few minutes as supposed to the hard reset thing)

All the best to the guys having issues I hope you can get it sorted out :)

Both implementations look good to me. I don't really see anything wrong with Samsungs method. As long as it works as consistently as it seems to I don't see it being an issue.

Having said that, I haven't tried it and probably won't purchase a GS5 anytime soon.

"iOS 7.1, released in March, solved the issue, bringing much-needed improvements to Touch ID's fingerprint recognition capabilities."

It doesn't solve the problem. All it did was fixed the length of time before it fades out again. A shut down and restart usually brings it back online. It still needs a lot of work to resolve the FADE issue.

You see nothing wrong with having to hold the phone in one hand at a specific angle and using the the finger directly in the middle of the scan area at the same angle it was enrolled in?

The Samsung implementation is horribly flawed.

My 5s Touch ID been broken for awhile, so I turned off the feature. I'll probably do a warranty swap before my year is up, but for now I'm back to my status quo - no passcode. Touch ID is only easier than no passcode when it works reliably.

It was nearly useless to me under iOS 7 and the polar vortex, but since the weather got warmer and we had iOS 7.1 it's working quite well again. Since both variables changed around the same time I can't tell which fixed the issue.

"...Apple's Touch ID faced its own problems early on, including "fade," or the increasingly erratic performance of the fingerprint sensor over time. iOS 7.1, released in March, solved the issue..."

What evidence, beyond anecdotal, is there that 7.1 solved the fade issue? Apple's release notes only stated:" Improves Touch ID fingerprint recognition." Meanwhile there seems to be plenty of anecdotal evidence fade is NOT solved.
I can only speak for myself but I had rather bad fade before 7.1. Zero fade since.

The "fade issue" is still there for me (sharp drop off in recognition starting on the second day after putting in "new fingers", twice per finger) and apparently also for at least one other commenter above. I might as well have bought a 5C (if I could ignore the aesthetics).

Yes, after giving 7.1 a few weeks I'm off to the Genius Bar soon to complain.

I haven't experienced the fade issue. Even with dirt/grease on my fingers.

The Samsung implementation is horribly flawed.

I have to hold the phone exactly the same way I hold my phone now. Not really an issue for me.

You can use your thumb from any angle using just one hand with the Apple implementation. Can you do the same with the S5? No.
