I'm having a similar issue. It worked fine (at least 4 out of 5 times) for the first few days, but now it works more like 25% of the time. Tried reset and new print scans, no dice. May have to swap it out.

Same issue here, I would say for the first 3 or 4 days it was pretty much flawless, 98% or close to. I scanned four fingers (both thumbs and index finders) and each worked as well as the other. Now mine is also closer to 25%. I've re-scanned and it seems ok for the first few attempts but then seems to get steadily worse.

Maybe they will start selling alcohol swabs to keep the scanner clean. Sapphire crystal collects a lot of oil, unlike some other materials.

I was having a lot of trouble. My fingertips get dried out easily, especially after I work with pottery. The clay is really drying. Essentially my fingerprint was always changing, so the sensor was having trouble. I prefer using my right thumb to unlock the phone, so I tried rescanning my thumb much lower down. Instead of using the tip of my thumb I scanned closer to the base of the 1st joint. Now I am at near 100% unlocking on the first try. Before it would take me 3-4 tries, and often I had to switch fingers. HTH.

Thanks for the tip. Will give it a go.

This is the 1 thing I like better about my Google Nexus 7, 2nd gen... Facial recognition for unlocking... Works flawlessly... Now, once you get past that, it doesn't hold a light to Apple though... :)

...very true, and stalker psychopaths are less likely to cut your fingers off to access your Nexus phone - much easier to just print off a profile picture from your Facebook page.

Win win really - most psychos just want to be friends and will only resort to amputation when completely necessary - you've probably already know them.

Mind you, it might to take longer for you to realise that said stalker has been accessing your phone data. :)

It actually works a little too well, try using a picture.

Apparently you are more of a celebrity than I am LOL, I'm 99.9% sure I have no stalkers...

Mine is a launch 5s and it was working perfectly (with a rare miss here and there, but not a big deal at all, I'd say 98% of the time it was fine)... we flew from RDU out to SJC a couple of weeks ago, and my touch sensor got worse and worse for the week and a half we were there.

I erased my stored fingerprints and rescanned them and it improved some.

We are back home now in NC and I have had to rescan my fingerprints 3 times already. I'd say I'm down to about 50% (if that).

I wonder if this is just dry fingers (change in climate) or if my fingerprint sensor is damaged now.

Thoughts?

I tried scanning the same finger multiple times and it has helped a little, but this is still not nearly as good as when the phone was new. I've cleaned the sensor, etc...

I'm thinking about going in for a swap at this point, though I dread the mall during the holiday season.

And advice is appreciated.

I went thru a period of multiple rescans and low % success. Tried cleaning etc, but without success.

It has been WAY better since I changed the way I use the home button. I used to use my thumb at about a 45 degree angle to push the home button. Not exactly the tip, but not the "flat" part either. So I set my scans up for this and had about a 25-30% success rate on first scan. Pretty frustrating.

I erased these scans and rescanned with the more flat part of my thumb. More or less like being fingerprinted. (before you ask, it was for a job interview . . .)

Now I have been having great results for a several weeks. Realistically, I don't expect a phone scanner to be 100% anyway, but just good enough to avoid being frustrated. I have to say, when it works this fingerprint scanner is a nice feature.

Same problem on my wife's 5s. At this point I'm gonna wait unit iOS 7.1 before taking any action. I strongly suspect a software problem.

Is twitter the app that is open after you unlock the phone. I have had issue with that a lot. On my second iphone and same issue

Have to agree that its a software issue. Weather conditions and skin being dry shouldn't affect this scanner as its biometric.

lets see what 7.1 does

My touch ID works so good that I was able to put clear plastic gloves and I was able to open my iphone.

It's cool. I have been fingerprinted, too. For a concealed carry permit I used to have. ;)

Mine has improved since I posted. That's a relief. Like you mentioned, I do have to keep my finger really flat. It does work, though.

Two months ago, I took my phone into the Apple store for a replacement and that new phone worked perfect for the first month. Then the same old problems occurred.
I've tried re-scanning many times with no improvement. The guy at the Genius Bar said that Apple was supposed to come out with a deal to replace the screens and touch button.

My scans disappeared and my TouchID turned itself off. I tried to scan again but it keeps saying failed as soon as I select Use touch ID for iPhone unlock or iTunes & App Store. so I cant even add a fingerprint. Looked everywhere for a fix. I guess it's going to Apple store to get exchanged...

Did you change anything else on the phone? Software update, etc?
