I'll go ahead and get everyone started with the official "fingerprintgate" thread related to the new Jet Black finish. Feel free to start complaints and condemnation promptly upon receipt :p

It appears to be a glossy finish. Complaining about fingerprints is like complaining that your drink is wet.

But you are of course right that people will complain nonetheless.

The Galaxy S6/S7 series are fingerprint magnets. There were no gates. Most people stick it in a case anyway. If you're getting the jet black you should get a case anyway.

God I wish there was a way to filter out ALL posts with the word 'gate' in them. I feel like I'm dealing with high schoolers here. SMH

I hope you sense the sarcasm in my post, but you make a good point. Macrumors.com has a... filtergate!

And we'll need to add the requisite "I wish I had chosen matte black" subforum.

I know your post is sarcasm but anytime I see "-gate" I immediately discount what comes next. I really wish people would stop using "gate" to describe scandals.

I'd love to see Macrumors put 'gate" on the banned list.

How does this even qualify as a "gate"? Apple stated on their web site that the glossy finish will show micro scratches.

And this Fingerprintgate shall continue next year when iPhone 8 goes glass. We pay top dollar for black options iPhone 7 or any color of the S7 edge and Note7 only for them to look like crap after a few minutes of holding them?

Doesn't it suck that the best 7 options are black just to hide the antenna lines? Only to attract smudges on both. The matte black will still get them. Just think about the matte black HTC One M7 which was metal too. Forget fingerprints, what about the different color underneath them when they get scratched up? Fingerprints can be cleaned off. A silver scratch underneath stays like that.

I said it weeks ago about a possible Watergate, no Nixon pun intended. Apple doesn't cover water damage. People assume it is waterproof when it is water-resistance. Being bothered by fingerprints? LOL. Get used to it. Coming from glassy iPhone 4 series, Samsung, and Sony phones. The fingerprint magnet continues with the iPhone 8...

Samsung also does not accept water damage claims and there have been no gates. The only time I can see this being an issue is if someone like consumer reports does a tear down and finds that the iPhone is defective/isn't as waterproof as Apple claim.

^ I know some of us have seen that video before during the last few days but it still shows that the matte black attracts fingerprints. The matte black just happens to show it less and not be prone to scratches.

I keep referring to the HTC One M7 because back then, I was undecided between black and silver. Then one reviewer mentioned smudges on the black M7 were harder to clean off. Again, this was matte aluminum unibody. Not glass or glossy plastic. Let's also not forget iPhone 5's Scruffgate which was more evident on the slate option which got corrected by the 5s space gray.

Black iPhone 7 might be the lesser of the two evils but it still gets dirty. The good thing is the matte black iPhone 7 isn't quite as black as the M7. The good thing about jet black is it does hide the antenna lines better and is more of a uniformed design. They both have tradeoffs. You want people to know you have an iPhone 7 with 128gb minimum, get jet black. You want less fingerprints, get black.

I dig the jet black enough considering what I really want is that exploding, black onyx Note7 which is prone to fingerprints and scratches just like that sexy, tacky, beautiful, ugly, 3G/3Gs-like, more expensive, cheap-looking, Darth Vader iPhone 7 jet black love/hate option. Just get used to fingerprints on all black options whether matte, plastic, or glass. The darker it gets, the more likely you will see smudges.

Thread should be titled, "fingerprint/scratch gate".

But does it show fingerprints any more than the glass screen? When I take my phone out of my pocket, the screen is generally fingerprint free from it brushing up against my pocket material. I'm assuming the same thing will happen with the entire phone.

Should be easy/easier to clean, now that they are water resistant.

You act like we've never had a glossy jet black iPhone before. The black iPhone 3G/3GS and black iPhone 4/4s were glossy jet black too.

It is a beautiful finish and is from the videos an amazing process to get it. That said, it is going to scratch easily and will be a fingerprint magnet. Anyone buying it should expect this and not complain one bit.
