This Press Release officially announces the standardization of the Firewire name by the 1394 Trade Association :

The 1394 Trade Association (TA) and Apple(R) (Nasdaq: AAPL) today announced that the FireWire(R) trademark, logo and symbol have been adopted as a brand identity for the IEEE 1394 connection standard in a no-fee license agreement between the TA and Apple. In addition, Apple has granted the TA the right to sub-license the FireWire Trademark for use on products, packaging and promotion of the standard.

This was first reported in a eeTimes article on May 7, 2002.

I hope this ends all of the Sony iLink crap. Apple invented firewire, so that name should be on all firewire products, not that stupid little Sony logo.

Apple need to introduce more cool names aswell I think.

Firewire just has a ring to it don't you think ?

It's already used as a name for a tune, not exactly a good one but it's still cool people know the name outside of computer and digital video circles.

There's also a band called "System 7"

It proves how much artists admire the macintosh when they name themselves or their work after things connected with it. No pun intended on the firewire thing obviously :D

You ought to see the look I've had when I've asked for Firewire in PC World......

This may sound like a small thing, but the amount of exposure that Apple will gain from this will be huge........ imagine...... the Firewire logo will be on any DV camera shipped, aswell as any PC with Firewire will have it as well..... this is serious exposure for Apple and it's technologies....... :)

And Firewire sounds cool as well........ :D
