Hi there. I'm posting this because everyone is talking about the two versions of the firmware. The payed one, that was available only today, and the other one that was on the link posted by someone. Both of them seem to have the same version number, but I'm really curious about the differences.

Yeah but besides that whats the difference?

I want to know this too. Because it took a while to get the firmware up I installed 5a347 (@ 222,6 MB). But today the firmware went up (I started buying apps two days ago and wanted to test them).

So now I clicked on BUY and then it doesnt download anything or install anything. When I click BUY again it said you already purchased this item: download again for free? I did that. Nothing happens.
Click on 'check for update: 'This is the current version!'

Do I have a good firmware on my iPod, or a bad one. It's the 5a347 from Apple's own direct link and I did legally purchase the release version but nothing's happening.

I dont think theres any difference to be honest I think the only difference is you can download the firmware directly and not pay or go through iTunes and pay to download......... just me guessing btw just looking at the version checker xml as I believe iTunes downloads using the link in the xml and I guess itunes downloads via this url after u pay I think.

Unless your refering to the last beta to the official firmware

No no not the beta. The direct Apple link. So if iTunes charged me, and I did not download, I still have the latest version, and I wont have done anything illigal or bad.

Ok. Well that's taken care of then.
(After I downloaded Super Monkey Ball, a favorite of mine, I HAD to try it and the firmware was taking longer than expected and then the links didnt work and then the servers were all messy).

Ive got the earlier downloaded one and i havnt noticed any difference whatsoever, its functioning properly, and its great! 😎

I too have the earlier one and it works fine for me. I haven't noticed any problems related to being an early adopter. In my opinion, its the exact same build. 😎

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)

there is no difference since it's the exact same version.

The only difference is the one through iTunes you have to pay for before downloading. The one on the torrent sites (as long as it's the same version number ie. 5A347) is exactly the same. It's the same file, just different methods of obtaining it.

theres also a direct download link from apple's servers which u can simply download and update to and not have to pay

I hate to say this, but those who do said method do not deserve the update even if you end up paying for it later; you task the servers like everyone else, but no one gets compensated and the paying people have to suffer from crashing servers and an unresponsive iTunes store.

I never said i condoned it just there was a bunch of threads yesterday posting links to the server file and i was just commenting

I have 5a345 installed on my iPod. It seems to function properly but is there any problems you know of with this version?

Md5?

Anyone have the "from apple" 2.0 firmware to run an md5 sum on? If so, you could compare it to these two "other" ones. And, btw, 5a345 and 5a347 are not identical, even though their sizes appear to be.

I have 5A345 and it's working great, no issues. Is there any reason to upgrade to 5A347?

Not really, it's just the Golden Master release so's a bit more stable but if it's working, I don't see why you should. 🙂
