I've had quite a few MacBooks & MacBook Pros not be able to use the new connector. Will be seeing if this does anything.

Only thing I don't like about the new L connector is that it's so snug against the computer, I either can't use a case with it or I have to block ports with it.

what about the late 2007 17" MacBook Pro I just checked for update and no updates available yet I have the new L-Shape Adaptor and have charging problems........ Same thing on my wifes MacBook Pro which is also a late 2007 17"

The other issue is the L shaped end does not pop out of the machine when it is pulled, it just yanks the computer with it.

 Wait, is this true? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the MagSafe connector?

Reset the SMC.

This adapter problem can also be fixed by resetting the SMC.

For the uninitiated:

1.) Unplug the MacBook power chord.

2.) Remove the battery.

3.) Hold the power button down for 10 seconds.

Done.

I work at a school where every student has a 2008 MacBook. We have consistently encountered this issue with the new "L-shaped" MagSafe power adapters, and resetting the SMC fixes it.

Apple charging cords in general are just bad.

Apple charging cords in general are just bad. They break so much easier than almost any other cord.

I believe they are using that soft rubber because it is a "green" recyclable material. It's not too "green" if you keep having to keep running a factory to make more because of the broken cords. They should go to something much stronger.

Really vicky? I've used old MagSafe chargers and never had a problem. Even if they fray and I'm lucky, which I probably am, unsafe to leave a laptop plugged in overnight or while you're away? I don't see this being accurate.

I had 1 of them get hot enough to discolor and melt the magsafe end and discolored the wood on the table it was on.

The replacement one for the one above wasn't even plugged into the computer when it shorted out and caught on fire, luckily I was home and smelled the smoke and put the flames out.

What, your shop doesn't have any tester hard drives running Snow Leopard that you can pop into a machine or plug into the machine via USB/FireWire in order to run this update for them?
We do. It's just principal.

I wondered why no new power supply would work with my 2008 MBP! I thought it awfully strange that I would keep getting defective units when my original power supply continued to work fine (I wanted a spare to use at my music recording station so I wouldn't have to move the power supply when docking the MBP in my den at the video editing area).

I do have a question though: Before your adapter caight fire, did the cable outer-casing physically break to expose the metal shield, or was the damage completely internal and undetectable in your case?

Obviously, if anyone spots that the wire at either end of their power adapter is damaged they should immediately stop using it and get a replacement or have it repaired by a competent professional. Of course, if the damage isn't visible, that's not any help.
When my first magsafe cable melted less than 3 months after purchasing my original Intel Macbook Pro in 2006 the damage was internal until it got hot enough to finally melt the casing and spark, there was no warning that it was going to happen other than for a few days before it would charge intermittently with the light switching from red to green to no light and the icon on the screen saying not charging. Somewhere along the way Apple did change the casing slightly from those very first magsafe adapters, because one of my replacements had a different part number to the prior one. Also, if this was not a known problem to Apple why would they have replaced no fewer than 2 of mine that were out of warranty with no questions asked? As a matter of fact Apple did have a replacement program for these adapters http://apcmag.com/apple_announces_magsafe_recall.htm

Those of you who say that I am fear-mongering, do a search on magsafe adapters burning, you will see that this was a common problem on the original magsafe adapters, and it happened to many other people besides me. If you choose not to believe me, then be my guest and continue to use your adapters at your own risk. Personally, the first sign of a problem with mine I stop using them immediately and get a replacement.

L-shaped magsafe = inferior

When my first "old" magsafe died a few months ago, I got applecare to send me a replacement. What came in was the L-shaped magsafe. I hated it from the get go. Cheap off-white color, thicker less-windable/less-flexible rubbery cord material, poor design, and totally felt inferior like a chinese dollar-store product. I then asked applecare to send me an actual replacement of the original, but they said that they were not able to do so. I ended up going to the Apple retail store and purchased the "old" magsafe which was in sufficient stock. (I eBay-sold the L-shaped magsafe Applecare: ended up being almost even).

This isn't entirely a fair comparison. Thanks to the patent on this, everything else includes the easy possibility of breaking the jack, too. On some of the early PowerBook G4s, this meant replacing the entire freaking logic board. On the 12" PowerBook G4, it meant a hideous amount of labor to get to the DC-in board. People still drop machines, but tripping over the power cord no longer damages the jack itself. At least now people only have to replace the charger.

I just updated this via the Software Update on my early 2008 MBP now my DVD is locked to region 1 and I can't change it....

Yes I know that you can change it only 5 times but I only ever had it set to Region 4...

To quote Eric Cartman "this is p!$$ing me off, this is fricken gay"....

This update turned your Apple laptop homosexual? Bizarre.
