As CPUs get faster, operating systems get slower, so really the purpose of these faster chips is to just keep up

Subjectively, this certainly seems so. In terms of speed and responsiveness of the operating system and MS Office programs, I really haven't experienced any additional speediness/responsiveness since Windows 3.1 + the first Pentium CPU - that was a blazing fast combo. Of course reading/writing to the HDDs of that era was slower, but doing the tasks that most corporate folks do (MS Office) the responsiveness (as I perceive) has not increased in all that time.

Sure, if waiting for a minute for the blur filter to apply was "blazing fast".

Dear Apple, update the iPad Pro will you?
If only the education deal applied to the Ipad Air, sadly only the pro's really benefit from it. Still think the IPP is the better option, hopefully the air doesnt have bendgate issues.

well I guess the point I’m making is that most people won’t need this power. How many things push the a12 to its limits in the air 3 now?

They don't really need to now, though. The iPad Air 3 will receive more major software updates, and it will eventually get slower as software becomes more complex. This future-proofs the 4 even further.

If they don't update the iPad Pro in October, I'd be confused as to why anyone would buy it over the Air now. Their iPad lineup is a bit unbalanced at the moment.
those of us who use apps like photoshop, adobe , affinity photo, needs the ipad pro more than the air...because the 6 gb ram and the extra gpu power is very welcomed

The iPad Air 4 is not a phone.
A14 will be placed in iphone also...and iphone has even lower resolution to be pushed...so his statement remains accurate

Good point, well taken, however I was focusing on the majority of users, who never use blur filters - most PC users are corporate drones like myself, not creatives. We need Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Outlook, etc. to get our work done.

Regarding the A14, I'd be getting the upcoming Air if I hadn't bought an iPad Pro this spring. This looks like a big winner.

Yeah, but for the iPhone, I think the answer is in part "because they can". You might also ask why even the $399 iPhone SE has an A13 in there.

Trust me, you're misremembering your Pentium. Even stuff like spell check took a moment. Excel? Well, try creating a chart and waiting. PowerPoint? Oops, you only get 256 colors, because 24-bit would be too slow. Outlook didn't exist yet.

Ugh. I’m gonna be so tempted to buy 12pro max! These scores are already almost double what my XS Max gets, AND the 12 Pros are supposed to get 2 extra GB of RAM compared to this iPad, so scores will definitely surpass this iPad...... my wallet is telling me wait one more year though 😂
i have an xs max myself and tempted, but as it is, i doubt there is any real world app this would even impact on a phone. i think im saving up for the Apple Silicon Mac instead. Thats one place where the performance will be impactful.

Absolutely untrue. You are having some delusional memories of the past. Even opening and saving were super slow. Try doing a reasonably complex calculation in Excel took time. Even copy and paste wasn’t instantaneous like it is today.

Machine learning for computational photography, voice dictation, and the like. On device ML training for personalization with privacy. The newest ML algorithms seem to double in compute demand every few months.

Start hoping by this Monday...i guess this coming week, we will have the release of the ipad air 4 and the announcement of the next digital event for 13th October

was gonna get a 2020 11 ipp, but this air is something else.
yes, but still on 4gb ram, overall the ipp 2020 is still better
Comparing both with the same 256GB storage option, the 11" Pro is only $150 more expensive and has 6GB of RAM, ProMotion, Face ID and four speakers. The difference in performance between A14 and A12Z is irrelevant.

Is there even a single Mac Pro with a better single core score than this iPad Air 4?
