Images purporting to depict a new battery designed for the iPhone 16 Pro today leaked online, showing a new metal casing and a slightly larger capacity.

iPhone-16-Side-Feature.jpg

The images come from the leaker known as "Kosutami," who has disseminated accurate information about Apple's plans in the past. If authentic, the images are the first to be shared of the iPhone 16's components.

The battery is said to be designed for an early stage iPhone 16 Pro prototype with a 3,355 mAh capacity. The iPhone 15 Pro contains a 3,274 mAh battery, meaning that prototype iPhone 16 Pro models currently feature a battery that is just 2.5% larger. The new battery also features a redesigned connector.

The most significant change is the transition from a black foil casing, the likes of which have been used on every iPhone model thus far, to a frosted metal shell. This change improves the thermal efficiency of the battery, with no significant impact on the component's weight. The Apple Watch used to feature batteries with black foil casing, but starting with the 40mm Apple Watch Series 7, Apple began adopting metal shells for improved thermals.

The early component images appear to confirm information shared last week that said Apple plans to introduce a new thermal system on the iPhone 16 to reduce overheating. In addition to batteries with metal shells on the iPhone 16 Pro models, the entire iPhone 16 lineup is rumored to feature a graphene heat-sink to reduce overheating. Graphene has high thermal conductivity, surpassing that of copper, which is currently used in iPhone heat-sinks. Apple has been interested in graphene for thermal management for some time, filing patents related to its exploration of the material for heat dissipation in portable devices.

The moves appear to come partly in response to widely encountered overheating issues experienced with the iPhone 15 Pro, which Apple ostensibly addressed through a software update earlier this year.

they don't really need to improve thermals. the new 3nm chip should be more efficient and it's not like there is anything wrong with the a17 pro. had my 15 pro max since day 1 and it hardly gets warm.

i just see this as an excuse for apple to raise the price again.

My 15pm Definitely overheats as the screen dims too soon and too much compared to my “old” 14pm. That’s due to overheating in some components, that is not acceptable!. I have never experienced this situation in an iPhone, ever! Nor in any other phone!.
Overheating is not just “too hot to hold”, it is also aggressive dining to mitigate the excess heat. Call it however you want.

My old 11 pro max with two battery replacements and new replacement 11 pro max does this since I updated to iOS 16 and 17.

I am pretty happy with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I am sure there is lot more than just a battery redesign in iPhone 16.

Won't everybody be surprised when the iPhone 16 comes out with no island, Apple will have moved on from that just like 3D Touch. o_O

Perhaps one day they'll figure out how to mitigate the giant camera hump.

I'll gladly live with bump if the consequence of getting rid of it is even a slight degradation of image quality or low light performance.

iPhones released over the last few years are punching way above their weight for a phone camera.

First: The best way to upgrade iPhone for my use case is once every 3 generations - mainly because the battery lasts for 3 years with good care.
Second: Apple might be working on their own battery design - at least according to Macrumors. At that point, I believe it might make a really compelling upgrade as battery tech today can be improved.

Third: Wow... you the man indeed. Rough night??

They just need to get rid of those weird reflections in the lens!

Cool. Another iPhone 12"SSSS" with little innovation and form factor additions. For those of us that have tried foldables and fit them into their day, going back doesn't cut it. I'll stick with my OnePlus Open + Apple Watch and BlueBubbles until the day we get a foldable iPhone and I'll happily be back to a better ecosystem and software stack.

Yeah, that's lens flare. Something I've been complaining about for a few years and has to do with the projecting "silvery" lens housing causing reflections into the lens when shooting close to the Sun.

Since they got rid of the reflective silver coating, that's become a non-issue for me.

I agree that it doesn't really NEED it, but I'll take any and all improvements they want to give us.

3nm didn‘t have a big impact yet, because we got that 4nm-SoC in the 14 Pro which was really efficient to begin with. And the yearly increase of efficiency seems to be too small to reach Apple‘s performance goals, which is why the battery capacity is raised every year by a bit, but the 14 Pro and 15 Pro didn‘t improve battery life.

That's another $100 added to the price of the iPhone 16 then.

Most people don't want a phone thick enough to eliminate the bump.

Spot on assessment. The bump doesn't bother me at all, being stoked with the image quality Apple is getting with their cameras.

The bump is mice nuts. If people want to lose sleep over it, there are other phone manufacturers out there to purchase instead.

Sounds like a minor improvement at best, while searching for better battery tech, such as graphene or solid state.

BUT: Can you believe anything you read on X these days? It's a cesspool of lies, disinformation and the lowest forms of human behavior, all of it heartily endorsed by its owner.
