I just watched the Platform State of the Union presentation.

That, more than the keynote, seemed to make it clear that Apple wants to be the dev platform of choice for the containerized/devops-flowing/linux-hosted/git-sourced stuff.

A quote on Apple silicon macs: "they will be amazing unix machines for developers and the scientific community that can run any software they like".

OK - now I want to see them in action.

They’re going to have a really tough time doing that without being able to support the dominant x86 container ecosystem.

Where I work we have about 30 developers on Macs who are doing devops in exactly this deployment chain and macOS ARM will be the end of the road for us. We are all going to have to migrate to Linux or windows in order to stay compatible with our production infrastructure.

Those are not default options in the OS. You have to use third party apps to achieve much of this functionality.

When the last time you tried, and do you even have iOS 13?

i just plugged in a HFS USB drive to my iPad and compressed a file on it, and copied that to the internal storage. Using the default file app, no 3rd party software involved.

I get that the filesystem usability sucks on iOS compared to MacOS, but youre saying things can’t be done at all when I’ve been doing them for ages. Hmm.

Should I am Going to get a 16 inch MacBook Pro in September/October should I wait for a redesigned arm 16 inch or should I just get it in October

Depends. The best of two worlds would be BIG.little AMD Ryzen/Apple ARM... ARM only —> No usable VM —> Bye for me.
It opens up so many opportunitie,if they have the ability to make it thinner they can add many more technologies into the Mac.

As for the iMac, it will feature an all-new form factor design and a 24-inch display.

Ok but does that mean no 27" version? or does that mean there will be a 30" version (yummy) ? I hope they make a matching monitor this time for dual monitor support. Or bring back using your iMac as a monitor. Also, it is time for Apple to make a real mouse that you can use for more than 15 minutes. They just need to suck it up and make a mouse that is the shape of a Logitech mouse. Do it in an Apple way but just do it. It won't win the most beautiful looking mouse award but it will win a spot on my desk and not in my drawer.

Hopefully with Apple Silicon the MacBook Pros can stop burning my fingers ...

1. Apple’s ARM chips are fast. They’ll emulate windows as fast as Intel chips run it natively. And it’ll only get better. Apple’s ARM performance drastically increases every year while Intel’s performance only marginally does.

2. Windows for ARM exists. Duh. Will it work natively on Apple’s ARM straight away? Maybe not, but Apple will show the world how awesome their ARM is and Microsoft would be utterly stupid not to get on board.

That first point (emphasis mine) seems optimistic, and there's also little data to support it at this point. Assuming Microsoft's/Qualcomm's emulator, an iPhone-class Apple chip can't really fulfill that requirement. Mac-class Apple chips might have far more performance, or they might not. We'll see.

That second point, yeah, I tend to agree. Macs will probably quickly become a big driver of moving Windows to ARM.

Says who? I’m a prodeveloper- I see nothing wrong with going through this transition.

I am jumping on this as soon as it's ready too. I do iOS, flutter, smart contracts. Only iOS / XCode really uses a lot of CPU and we can bet that will be optimized by Apple to work much better than on existing machines.

Developers are the perfect target, they're willing to put up with bugs, they provide bug reports, and most importantly anything they're working on, they will make it work on their own machine ;)

I just got a new i9 16" MBP - wish it had ARM but I guess they weren't ready.

That 13" will finally have PRO battery life, 12h+ easily. Same batter, way lower power chip, with way better power saving facilities.

Interesting if true... to start with a Pro instead of an Air (or 12") must mean Apple has confidence in the performance of their chips.
Yea I would think they have confidence in the performance if you watched the keynote.

Apple is destroyn Apple. No Macbook pro 13...discontinued after 6 months ...,not to mention 5 years of crap keyboards which render the impacted models down to zero value, so very few will buy a butterfly but very great hardware within machines. No respect for users efforts and for the money they spent on ,don’t talk me about the repair program for that keyboards flawed, seems all made at desk.., by the way bootcamp was for using egpu on windows, i will put my money in a windows based machine , saying goodbye to logic and welcome back cubase. This is wrong on so many levels Apple.

New rumors that the 14" MBP with a MiniLED display is coming. Still feel this and the rumored ~24" iMac will both be the first consumer Apple Silicon models.
