You can use 10.6 if you want the Front Row interface, or you could use launchpad (which I KNOW is not spectacular). I don't want to sound like I think you are attacking me with that question, it's a fair question. I was so focused on cost that I may not have considered interface. What is your opinion on my response?

Your response is fine. For a long time I was considering doing a carpc. I ended up buying a new car and don't feel like mucking with it now though.

I wonder if Plex is touch friendly.

I've already explained it. Is using my last name supposed to intimidate me?

Totally uncool move on his part.

Can I have a turn at the argument? I'm trying to look past the posturing here. I'm of the opinion that a carpc system is a) too much work, b) too much money), and c) a pain in the butt to operate compared with CarPlay. To me this makes it a hobby solution and a worthwhile project on that measure alone, but not a better solution. I'm not considering AppRadio because it is awful.

I think the price to beat is $550, since that's what it costs to get an AVH-4000NEX. I'll grant that installation and interface accessories will add a couple hundred.

I've had my bad days. I rewrote what I wanted to say at least twice. I can understand he's likely not my biggest fan.

After some serious consideration, I would agree with most of what you said. The parts I don't agree with, aren't worth the argument at this point. What I was trying to illustrate was just that the price is so close to a full blown CarPC, I wonder if it is this products "time" yet.

I suspect there are some people that would benefit from this device in their vehicle. It would be nice if you could add hardware plugins. Like the ability to interface directly with the cars computer, LADAR detectors, amateur radios...

Want to change the tuning of your car... there's an app for that. Be reminded to keep it under the speed limit? There's an app for that... Basically turn this into a super powerful "Automatic" https://www.automatic.com Okay, maybe some more fantasy from me.

Exactly what I've been saying. Why would you have to beat the highest unit price when the lowest does the exact same thing? The least expensive unit is going to cost less and work better plus it will work right out of the box with out the hours of tinkering and headaches it's going to take to get a car computer working. Additionally it'll look so much better.

There's a reason that 99.9% of those in the market for this type of integration will go with an AppRadio rather than building it themselves. It's the same reason that most buy a Mac rather than building a Hackintosh. Most of us want something that works out of the box, looks better, and will see support and updates along with a warranty, things you don't get when you hack it together yourself.

Well, the Pioneer SPH-DA120 Appradio4 has finally become available here in the UK and I have ordered one for collection from the store tomorrow.

£349 - 15% discount so not too bad considering the screen in capacitive and this may finally be the fully integrated incar smartphone solution I have been waiting for.

I do feel a bit of an early adopter as the amount of apps available are very limited - but what do I really want to do in the car?!

As long as I have Nav and access to Bluetooth phone calls, radio and Spotify I should be happy.

The new Appradio should play choons off USB which the last Appradio didn't do - so I'll be happy!

I'd rather use google maps - but hopefully Apple maps are getting closer in the UK?

I will update here how I get on fitting and using it if anyone cares?

Had my Appradio 4 installed a couple of days now. Things are pretty good, but the Spotify app is buggy as hell - it has been doing some strange things. Apparently Rdio is now carplay capable.

I have also noticed that if the navigation app is still active when you disconnect the iPhone and get out of the car, you cannot cancel the navigation!

Here is a link to my install thread if anyone is interested:

I hate HATE what iOS 8.1 did to Carplay, or more specifically Album Art in Carplay. What used to be a full screen image of your album has not been further obscured by a black veil that covers the lower half of the image so you only barely see the top of the art. That also makes the gradation of colors have strange horizontal lines going across the screen.

Apple, you really need a place for feedback when it comes to Carplay.

Spotify seems to work better after 8.1 and the latest Spotify update but I couldn't test it properly as I've cancelled my premium sub. Rdio works well. Siri is a bit hit and miss. The keyboard went a bit nuts too.

Has anyone had issues with their carplay device and their car battery? I got an app radio 4 about a month ago and if I don't start my car within a few hours my truck will barely start. I can only assume the app radio is somehow draining the battery when the truck is not running. I have not been able to figure out how to turn the damn thing off! Any suggestions.

If you used a wiring harness the radio should be off when the vehicle isn't on. The battery connection (typically yellow) is only supposed to allow you to maintain system settings.

Def sounds like a wiring issue - could you have perm and switched live swapped, or swiched and perm both connected to perm live on the car?

Not had any issues in my BMW E92 325i - biggest challenge was finding a perm live, as BMWs shut down almost everything within an hour of taking the key out of the ignition. I took my perm feed direct from the battery in the end.

Is it just me or has Apple seemingly forgotten about CarPlay??? It really seems that way. Very little mention of it since it was announced and no new app support has been announced....

Carplay is built in to the OS. There is nothing left for apple to do. It is up to the receiver manufacturers to interface to it.

...except for market it, which they clearly weren't doing when I made that post long ago.

Marketing, again is up to the manufacturer. Apple isn't going to really advertise what car you should buy, at least not until CarPlay is actually active on cars rolling off the assembly line, which i don't believe will happen until next year for the 2016 model year.
