apple should do a deal to help out american car companies. just to help out american manufacturing. US cars sells in China, but everywhere else not too much.

we need to start manufacturing things besides weapons.

I was finally able to download it earlier but it took forever. I also noticed that somebody else just post it to their dropbox as well. In case anybody else needs it, I have it in my public folder as well.

Yes, it will open up as a 5000NEX folder but I just installed it and it works so don't be alarmed by that.

I'd just like to thank you early adopters for uploading your reviews and answering our questions! :D

As soon as I can get an Appradio 4 in the Uk I'll get one. I do fancy DAB but the Pioneer prices start to get daft with the higher spec models.

I think Siri would work best with a steering wheel button. Unfortunately my connects2 adapter doesn't work with the phone button on my BMW.

This was great! Quick questions: The "Hey Siri" issue... is it limited to when you are using a specific app, or does she just ignore you no matter what you do. Also, does it seem like CarPlay is using the NEX's mic to listen for Hey Siri and can it therefore hear you better over loudish music? Thanks! :)

Hard to say. I mean here's what I know for sure:

  • The phone is listening for "Hey Siri" via its own microphone.
  • The phone has no trouble recognizing me if I mute or attenuate the radio before saying "Hey Siri." With loud music not so much.
  • Once Siri is invoked there's a transition from the built-in iPhone mic to the mic that's hard-wired to the Pioneer head unit.
  • Voice recognition accuracy via the Pioneer microphone is generally exceptional even with the considerable amount of road noise my car experiences, the error in my video notwithstanding.

Problem is, often "Hey Siri" just results in a pause and the low-pitched double-ding you get when Siri doesn't hear you say anything. This problem doesn't seem to be tied to whatever specific app might be running at the time. Holding the Pioneer's hardware button or the soft home button in CarPlay provides reliable access to Siri.

What I conclude from this is that there's an error somewhere in the transition from the built-in mic to the Pioneer mic.

Me too. But at least in Pioneer's case, the only way to get Siri is with a long press of a properly-programmed steering wheel button. And given that I can just reach over or (in theory, someday, maybe) invoke Siri by voice, I'd rather use that SW button for something else.

Took a while to download the firmware as Pioneer's website cannot handle the traffic.
Once downloaded, I copied the Unziped folder to an SD card and installed per the instructions. The instructions fail to tell you that the firmware update option will be grayed out unless the emergency brake is installed!

Once installed, carplay did not autoplay until I entered phone setup on the pioneer head unit and changed the cable choice to USB only (I had been using USB/HDMI)

Works great. REALLY LOVE CARPLAY.
Some things are a bit glitchy. Podcasts sometimes wont play, have to kill the app on the phone and try again. When disconnecting the phone (iPhone 5S) seems locked up for a minute sometimes, then catches up. Maps is pretty sweet, touching the text directions disables guidance but leaves the maps with highlighted route, I really like this for when I know the current portion of the route. Messaging is nice, but sometimes Siri's reading of an incoming message isn't understandable, kind of combines a few words into one or something.

You're right, it makes sense to pay more for so much less
Because that is what I meant by having full OS versions of software available. Thank you for jumping to ridiculous to prove how little value your point has.

Where could someone go to get information about installing a computer in a car? If only there were a resource available that might walk someone through it. Something like Instructables, Vimeo, YouTube....

At one HE11 of a premium (my point).
No I did not. You were in such a hurry with your witty response you did not read where I flatly stated the cost was included.

Inverter and a backup battery (as one of many solutions), essentially creating your own UPS. I am an amateur radio operator and was in the Signal Corps in the Army and have set up mobile systems with a greater current draw that I am describing.

WiFi when at home, use a cellphone as a hotspot...

You're right. You would have to install a couple dollar relay to cause shutdown. That makes this whole thing impossible...

Seriously... not based on anything you have said.

What features are you gaining by having a full OS over CarPlay if it isn't this? You have music streaming, you have navigation, you have Siri for text, and phone calls...hopefully your computer is able to handle this for you right? Let's install more software to take care of these tasks on your Mac Mini now. Not to mention the lack of a touch friendly UI in OSX.

Most people don't have technical know how to complete this job.

At less than $600 for an AppRadio, this is hardly a premium. You will be hard pressed to find a mac mini, touchscreen dash unit, and all the install hardware.

Let's add the cost of all these components. As you say, you're an amateur radio operator, clearly you would have the ability to do this work yourself. Are you aware the vast majority of consumers are not radio operators?

"We can go anywhere you want, so long as we stay within my WiFi network. When we leave I will have to connect to my Hotspot instead."
Let me guess the computer will automatically connect to your preferred network. Let's hope "It just works".

More to the cost, I think we're pretty even at this point. I hope the power draw from you constantly using this doesn't mean you have to replace your alternator...that can be real expensive.
You failed to mention the start-up times. Plus who wants to install a relay that cuts power to desktop computer immediately...no need to go through the shutdown procedures.

I just finished my update on my AVIC5000NEX and it went well. My wife had to run errands with my daughter so I didn't really play with it long, but everything was working as expected. Sending a text via voice was a snap.

CarPlay is not working for me. Just got the firmware update for my AVH-4000NEX. Plugged in my iPhone 6 running iOS 8.0.3 and nothing different than before. I tried resetting my NEX unit to factory settings and still nothing. Gonna try and follow up with Pioneer tomorrow :p Anyone else having troubles?

I bought the 4000NEX months ago thinking the CarPlay update was just around the corner. It took forever, but it was worth the wait. The interface is as smooth and simple as you would expect from an Apple product. I'm having some problems with the Spotify app, but everything else has been flawless so far.

What phone are you using? I'm thinking it's just not working with my iPhone 6 but I don't know. The screen on both the deck and my phone say nothing about CarPlay when I plug them in.

Having the same issue. Installed firmware on my 4000NEX but nothing happens when plugging in my iPhone 6+. My iOS is updated to 8.0.2 and I also made sure my smart phone settings were setup for connection with USB only. I also see all the CarPlay settings on my 4000NEX but still nothing when I plug in.

My 4000NEX works fine with my iPhone 6....

someone else a couple posts above you said that they needed to set up the cable choice to be "usb only" or something.... what i will tell you is that until the receiver recognizes an iPhone is connected with a lightning cable the carplay app starts automatically. Until the unit recognizes the iphone and brings up carplay, theres really no a perceivable difference in the OS.....

Check Crutchfield, they usually have the breakdown as to what can fit in each model car.

Thank you! Just checked Crutchfield's website and these new Pioneer units do not replace my 2009 Santa Fe factory installed navigation system.

I guess I'll stick with the Apple iPhone 5 Lightning 8 Pin to 30 Pin Adapter for my Griffin iTrip FM transmitter and listen to my music on my iPhone until I buy a new SUV. :(

Are you running iOS 8 or 8.0.2?

If you think it's paying more, you're being silly.

Show me how you can put a new Mac mini with a warranty (like the Pioneer will carry) plus a touchscreen, plus GPS receiver, plus power supply power converter, all for less than the $600 the AppRadio 4 will cost? :roll eyes:

Why does it need to be new. A Mac Mini Core 2 Duo used will suffice, correct?

Additionally, it took me 30 minutes to install my AppRadio 3. How long will it take to install that Mac mini and get everything up and running? I know what I make and unless you can install it in under a minute or two, it's going to be far less to buy a Pioneer stereo instead.

That's true, and as I implied you will be limited to its capabilities. The difference in capabilities carries a monetary value.

Usability is going to be another HUGE issue. Products like the AppRadio are stupid easy to use. Anyone can sit down and make it work in seconds. It'll take much more work to use a Mac mini and touch screen. Plus the products you want to use with it aren't meant for the tiny car screen. Pandora will be a headache to navigate, Apple Maps for OS X isn't compatible with GPS receivers so you'll have to go a paid route like RouteBuddy which costs another $65.... and it's still not made for a touchscreen.

And that's all assuming people want to do it themselves. But they don't. Only a small portion of consumers install their own stereos. Most have Best Buy or whoever install it for them. They don't want to deal with the headache of doing it themselves.

I see where this is going, let me make it ultra simple so it is more easily digestible.

Yes there are people this won't work for, and they will pay the cash to get this pioneer system. There are some people that what I said will work for, and I am willing to bet some have already done it.

My point was it is amazing how close it is to the cost of installing a full computer with a full OS. I demonstrated that. Enjoy.

I addressed every concern you stated in posts elsewhere. The point was, "gee with how close it is to the cost of a full OS and hardware, MAYBE just MAYBE it might be worth adjusting the price point a little." It's amazing how important it is to be right.

There are two USB ports

Okay, I was told that 4000NEX has two USB ports, and only USB port 1 works with CarPlay, while USB port 2 only provides regular iPod functionalities. I haven't tried it if switching port would help yet, but that would be the first thing I'd try.

Demonstrate that you can do it for less than the $400 the AppRadio costs. Please. List of parts. Everything from the Mac mini to the touchscreen, to the software, to the mounts, power supply, etc. You can't do it for anywhere near the price and that's WITHOUT the huge cost which is the time involved in doing a car computer.

I can confirm that you need to use USB1, and that the phone must be set to USB connection.
This is my only complaint. I have to switch between Bluetooth and USB if I want to use the built in Pandora App in the 4000NEX.
Sigh. I would like both. Bluetooth for short trips, and then CarPlay/4000NEX to start up CarPlay when connected via USB.
