They can leave out the camera and give me 4G Ram and start at 64G of storage and I'd be happy, who uses the camera on these things.

The end game is being light enough you could hold it all day end not feel it. When its down to the weight of a Kindle Paperwhite of the same size (probably around 375g), it will have reached its goal. Right now it is at 444g. So, I'd say there's one more downsizing in its future with current battery technologies.

Until humans evolve to the point of 375g being too much for their frail little arms to handle, lol. Yeah I get your point though. It's a natural progression, but what is beyond 375g? I can't wait for new materials that can alter the shape of the device. I want an iPhone that flips open into an iPad.

Maybe Apple will finally stop tying iOS to hardware announcements. That would be smart. Clearly they have all they can handle fixing iOS 8 bugs. Adding split screen multitasking right now would be a nightmare, IMO. Save it for a spring event where they announce a new larger iPad "pro" device.

sounds about right and it will be selective i wager where each dev will have to write the app to support split screen mode

If this has 2GB RAM I'm sold. Otherwise no deal.

Holy Cow, I agree with Rogifan!!!

My iPad 3, New iPad, or whatever else they called the darn thing; I call it the iPad they abandoned 6 months hence, is especially woeful now that it has iOS 8. It's constantly reloading pages in Safari; even when it's the only application running and one tab open. I'm not a gamer or one that uses many apps - for me it's a comfortable browser and Flipboard utility.

I've taken to surfing the net on my Nexus 5 because, with it's 2 GB of RAM it's nowhere near as frustrating as my iPad.

If this has 2GB of RAM I'll definitely upgrade otherwise, for my use cases, I might even look at a Chromebook.

Why is the base only 16GB, it should be 32 by now.

Because they want to annoy people like me who get calls from their parents and grandparents wondering how they can clear off more space, and why the iOS 8 won't install. I even told them to get 32GB but people often buy what is cheap, not what they need. "You mean I went from a Dell laptop with a 120GB hard drive to an iPad with 16GB and I can't store all my photos?" Yep. At least now iCloud Drive will help with that, but then again older people fear the cloud and don't like paying monthly. At least the older people in my life don't.

"I feel like I could hold it over my head in bed without any worry of smacking myself. Not something I can say about any other 10-inch tablet."
He can't have held any other tablets, I'm pretty sure that at least Sony and a Sammy have lighter tablets.

The Galaxy Tab 10.5 is 1.03 pounds. The Sony Xperia Z2 tablet is .968 pounds, same as iPad Air 2.

Nothing new

Apple is so lazy with the iPad, it's getting ridiculous. I just sold mine because I'm tired of this product going nowhere. Where's the multitasking? Why is the interface still no different from the iphone? At least Microsoft is taking risks with the Surface and trying to figure out new ways to be productive on a tablet.

iPad needs a serious rethinking of the UI. It's a big iPhone, nothing more, nothing less.

What do you want to do on it but cannot?

I would really like to hear more on the differences in the display glossiness. I felt the first Air was super glossy, more so than my older iPad

Hmmm, you would be WRONG in the case of SAMSUNG, Galaxy Note 10.1 is 540g (it has a 16 x 9 format btw), that's 22% heavier

The Xperia Z is 495g, 12% more than the air 2, close to the Air. Possibly the new very thin Sony will be about the same.

It's funny, when I first got the Air it felt so much lighter than my 3rd gen iPad. Now when I use it for reading for extended periods of time it feels heavy. So I'll take any weight reduction they give us.

Apple totally neglected the iPad mini form factor. The new one has no A8 processor, no 8 mpx camera, is not thinner, not lighter. I bet it even has the same old screen. They added only Touch ID and gold color.

Most underwhelming iPad mini update ever.

Yeah. Really lame. They could've at least made it thinner and bonded the display. Regular A8 would be nice too.

Obviously Apple has data that shows for some 16 is enough and for everyone else they'll give you 64 for the price of 32. It's a bean counter move to get those in between to jump up $100 when they probably wouldn't if Apple offered 32 for the same price as 16.
must be the same kind of data that didn't tell them that half ios7 users can't update to ios8 because they don't have enough space on their 16GB devices.
as you say this is just to squeeze some extra cash from consumers. it's still a dick move though. they'll regret it too. it will frustrate a LOT of users at the expense of a tiny uptick in profit margins.

I'm very tempted to get the Air 2, but since I use a tablet for about 70% reading, pixel density is a BFD to me. Going from my 323 ppi Nexus 7 to a 264 ppi Air 2 would actually be a downgrade for my primary need of crystal clear ultra sharp text.

All Apple needed to do was update the display on the rMini to a 100% sRGB laminated construction similar to the iPhones and Air 2. I'd have bought it sans the touch ID and A8. There is no effing way in all of holy hell I will buy a tablet in 2014 with anything less than 100% sRGB - that is an insult to consumers.

I cannot remember ever waiting so long for a company to get a product right. Now they've got THREE subnormal Mini models on sale. Focus, Apple, focus! Sell one premium rMini. "Psssstttt, Mr. Cook, you're not working at Compaq anymore!"

I wish tablets didn't have rear cameras and they just put that money towards RAM or something.

Bendgate 2.0?

How about the last Air Bender?

What do you want to do on it but cannot?

Lots of things actually. I want to be able to download files and store them in folders, I want multiple apps open at the same time, on the same screen. Having to double tap to enter messages to respond to a text, and then double tap back to whatever I was doing is pretty clunky (and slow). Why can't I float messages on top of whatever else I'm doing? Things like this don't bother me on the iphone, but on an iPad it's pretty lame.

I'm not convinced I need a tablet at this point. I have an iphone that works great, and a macbook pro that works great. But if I do buy a tablet again, it will definitely be a Microsoft or Android device. At least they are trying to figure out new possibilities with the format.

i must say i find your statements contradictory.

personally i dont see them as "giving" 64 for the price of 32 but rather selling you the 16 for the price of a 32.

i think the market leader should not have to play these kinds of games. with ota updates, pictures taking up more space and all kinds of apps for everything available i find the 16 for an ipad is criminally small space.
