That's one of the reasons I can't wait to get my hands on the 3rd generation. I'm so sick of apps crashing. And then going to diagnostics and seeing it's a memory issue.

PC equates to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_computer

Notebook computers fit this description. And the iPad fits this description with cut the cord. Because you need cut the cord to fit the "no intervening computer operator" ie no need to sync to another Mac to activate.

So in short the iPad IS a PC. It is just not a PC in the traditional sense. It is the new breed of PC. But still very much a PC.

I agree and I write embedded software for a living. The meaing of Personal Computer is evolving with the existence of the iPad. Some people have a very narrow view of what a computer really is. I like the term Personal Computing Device.

Have you applied the iOS 5.1 update? I did last night on my iPad 1. I was getting the issue where Safari would crash due to low memory with iOS 5.0.1. After updating to iOS 5.1 Safari no longer crashes. I even tried to get Safari to crash by having 10 open apps and 5 tabs open in Safari. Could not get it to crash. When I looked at the available memory it seems iOS 5.1 is more efficient and uses less memory.

I just updated last night so haven't really had a chance to use it yet. But what you say sounds promising. And if the new iPad is bumped up to 1GB then even better. :)

What I don't understand is with the retina display won't that increase the size of apps, especially books and magazines? If so, why does apple think 16>32>64 is sufficient storage?

I find myself wanting the new iPad, but I'm still not sure why. My new 13" air is so easy to use and travel with. It may not have the battery life of the iPad, but for production of documents, I'll take the old-school keyboard over the on-screen one any day.

And with the air, I get a bigger screen too...but I still want a new iPad.

I love the iPad, it is easier to carry around than any laptop. the apps are so responsive. Typing on any virtual keypad is a hassle but I perferred typing on the screen than a BT keyboard because of the position that one needs to tap the screen to move the cursor or navigate on the screen.

Haptic feel would be nice but I no longer know how important it would be, till we have it.

As for laptop vs iPad, I find there are few things I need a laptop for anymore. My desktop is for that. If you need certains apps for business on the move, I would assume a laptop would be indispensable . The iPad is limited with regards to powerhouse programs.

I wonder if people who say you can't use the iPad for reading have actually tried? I own both a kindle and iPad and its the iPad i use most of the time for reading because it has the larger screen and is lit. I only use the kindle when I am outside. I don't hold them the same. Sure you can wave the kindle around while reading, but so what? You balance the iPad while reading. Works fine.

When you're at home on the couch sure but on the bus/train/plane not so much.

If Apple built a new network and offered lower prices and/or unlimited data plans it would get me a lot more excited and help bring me back into the fold. Yes it would take a lot of time and money, but who is in a better position than Apple to afford the costs and sell the result? That would make me a lot more impressed by their post-Jobs strength and abilities than these rather predictable improvements to displays and processors.

They couldn't afford to "build a new network and offer lower prices", nor do they need to. Yes they have a massive cash pile but they don't need to go tossing it away to reinvent the wheel. I do believe they will accomplish the same end goal, just in a different solution. If they did what you proposed, they would need to build a "new network" in every country they operate. AT&T and verizon are about $2Billion net worth, so 230 countries x even 1$billion average per country and we see they could not do this even with their massive cash horde. However they do have a pat. applied for that is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) concept. This would allow them to have a "virtual network" that runs on top of the various carriers by reselling the connection. So Apple would buy huge amounts of bulk data and resell that to consumers via an Apple operated & branded MVNO. This would completely change the game again.

Imagine having an Apple mobile network plan for ~$70/mo with unlimited everything... WORLD WIDE! imagine going on vacation in another country and not having to worry about international roaming. It would instantly solidify and cause a huge shift in the enterprise market. It would instantly differentiate all of their products in their respective categories. It would instantly allow them greater control over the user experience, allow for what they have really wanted from the beginning (on device setup and activation). Imagine having a service tied to your AppleID that can be used on your iPhone, iPad, and MacBook... who needs a mobile HotSpot? when all your devices connect themselves, all under one plan.

All of those points relate to just one feature, the ability to run two apps side by side. An interesting feature, but for me personally, it doesn't light my noodle.

Not to mention the iPad has 4 finger swipe to page between open apps, so in a virtual sense you can run 2 apps "side by side" and either one is slid off screen so you have both full screen. With how fluid the iPad is (and I assume the new iPad will be as well) the "runs 2 apps side by side" is pointless on a tablet. Being able to swipe between 2 full screen apps as smoothly as the iPad makes it unneeded.

Looking for thoughts on iPad's video capabilities

Nice. Finally a solid iPad, first rate hardware, no sub-par components, cell architecture not in danger of going obsolete in a year...

Next up, add tactile feedback and/or a wacom digitizer layer, & on the software side, Siri, VOIP ...and finally get over the "photos and music" fixation and address iOS's sadly neglected video capabilities.

Then start making em somewhere other than China.

This will be my first iPad and I'm very much looking forward to it. The comment I quoted above made me want to get other's thoughts. What do others think about the new iPad's video capabilities? Do most think that they are lacking? It's a pretty open question, because I'm not sure what capabilities ThunderSkunk was referring to...was he referring to the videos displayed on the screen? The ability to record video? Edit videos? Video processing in apps/games? I wanted to directly ask ThunderSkunk, but I couldn't figure out how to contact him directly. Therefore, I'll ask the entire forum for their thoughts on the new iPad's video capabilities.

I'm not disagreeing or agreeing with ThunderSkunk's post...I was just looking to get others thoughts. Thanks for the input, guys.

I did not say that you cannot use it for reading, I wrote that I still find it too heavy and especially the leverage too exhausting on the holding hand. The kindle is a *lot* easier on the muscles, my sister in law just bought one for her holiday just because of that one reason (+plus taking it into bright and hot sunlight on the beach)!

And yes, I did try it before with an iPad 2 and decided that the combination of weight and low screen resolution doesn't cut it for me. Because of that I looked at other vendors' tabs that offer a better combination of both. But knowing that Apple planed a "Retina" iPad with a resolution that trumps everything else I decided to wait and now I bought the thing.

Being back-lit makes it perfect as a bed reader, especially with your partner (and baby) sleeping right beside you. But again, lying in bed is not the best position to hold a large leverage pad over a long time. You often end up lying it down and sitting over it (unless you want to sit up in bed), which isn't exactly comfortable either.

So even with all its benefits and as a future owner I can still find it too heavy. Personal preference and stuff... :p

I'm amazed people are getting confused with the name, or saying it's a silly naming system.

Which MacBook Pro do you have? The mid 2011 update.
Which iPad do you have? The early 2012 update.

or

Which iPod do you have? 4th generation.
Which iPad do you have? 3rd generation.

It's not that difficult, people!

huh i thought corporate and education discounts were not applicable?

didn't think it would either but I tried and I got one, not sure if my company has some special agreement with Apple, pretty sure we do a lot of stuff for them

it was only $12 tho, lol

Steve Jobs had an idea to solve this data thing

What do you want Apple to do? Buy ATT? I don't know how Apple can solve the problem although I'm sure their business would pick up if the problem was solved.

Back in the late 80"s Steve wanted a national wifi network, There were rumblings of apple becoming its own virtual network partner with all the major carriers, but steve did not want that, he likes controlling from end to end,, from construction, software, utility,,, and i know it sounds far fetched but i think sometime in the future you might see a nation wide wifi network,, there is a big shift into data,, and i think this could happen at some point,, would make perfect since,, I've always said that apple would become a major network broadcaster, like abc,nbc etc,,, it could happen

I never once proposed any such thing. I do however find it rather fascinating that in your view every phone company on earth is the size of AT&T and that Apple apparently operates in 230 countries. Care to explain how you came to those conclusions?

For as slick as the iPad is at doing everything it does, video is worse than an afterthought by comparison. Notice how SJ & Co would always talk the iPad giving you access to "your favorite music and pictures"? There are a plethora of quick and easy and user-friendly options to manage and work with your pictures and music. By contrast, when it comes to video, you are supposed to:

Buy movies on iTunes, edit movies you shot with the iPads own camera, stop everything you're doing to play them. End.

1. There should be a way to play DVD's via either MBA-like superdrive sharing, or the USB connection kit & external.

2. Since there isn't, with playback req's this limited, Apple should provide a mmfpeg-like tool preset capable of encoding content from any source for iOS playback. Having to talk grannies and computer-illiterate people through the lengthy and tedious hit-or-miss process involved in getting their DVD's or existing movie files onto their devices is absurd.

3. iTunes on OSX supports precious few codecs as it is. iOS playing even less codecs than iTunes means you'll eat up time and even more drivespace making miniature iPad specific copies of your video files to sync over. ...for display on your iPad3s huge-res screen.

4. A year later, and iMovie still can't just edit the files in the "videos" app. Want to work on a movie project on your mac and your iPad? Forget it. Looks neat, but is nearly completely useless. Hence all the neg reviews.

5. iOS's videos and photos apps should be smart enough to display their appropriate content, photos under photos, videos under the "videos" app, not, some vids in videos, some vids under photos buried in the camera roll in a heap of photographs... even if technically they're in the "camera roll" on disk, sort it out in the UI already, it's counter-intuitive.

6. Fullscreen only playback, pauses as soon as you leave the app? iPad iOS needs a useful Picture in Picture window, movable, scalable, minimizable on pinchout, that remains playing so you can keep watching or listening as you multitask. You don't need a complicated UI to do that.

19. Star Wars. Every time I try to watch it on my iPad, all I see is cheesy CGI everywhere. It makes me spit hot fire and throw things. How do I make it stop.

Update after update, video remains unchanged. We got a cool reminders app and a card printing service though, so you know, thats neat. It's been so neglected I'm half expecting a future "Movies"-themed keynote & launch of a quad-core iPad5, where they finally address the fact that moving pictures on a screen are a novel innovation.

But then I'll probably crab about no vector-animation support.
