I felt the Tim Cook intro would lead to something just a TAD more revolutionary. He's absolutely right, but in the wrong year: it is a PC supplanting desktops. I was on the edge of my seat for him to say something, like...

But, no. Figures. The moment Apple gets off its iAss and makes something like that, they shut down about every other desktop out there for 90% of the market, and conquer everything ever made.

I agree. The phrase "post PC era" doesn't apply quite yet. Perhaps Apple knows their future devices will bring in this era, but as of right now, that era has not come to the public.

The technology is there but not tied all together yet. When my cellphone has a dock that plugs into the network, a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse and provides me with my files and an OS to work and play on, then we have the post PC era. Until then, my business files and programs are on one computer at work. My gaming rig is at home. My on the go connection to media is in my pocket.

Higher resolution display was what I was waiting for. Unfortunately my other main wish for a lighter pad was not fulfilled (iPad 3 is slightly heavier even). Still it's a buy now, PDF on this screen is worth looking at.

Do a couple of pushups for a week and you can lift this much "heavier" iPad.

The name is not "The new iPad". It's just called iPad, and this happens to be the new one.

Or, continue to make fun of its "name" while nobody takes you seriously. I'll be in the other room enjoying my iPad.

people are way over thinking the name.

you are not going to go on stage and say iPad 3rd generation, you are going to just refer to it as the new ipad because it is indeed new.

It will be just referenced as iPad later on and of course it will only say iPad on the back.

do you really say iPad2 everytime you are talking about your iPad? I doubt it.

edit: appeared just after santaliqueur posted, i agree with him.

So the verdict on the name is "The new iPad?" We definitely can't just call it iPad, as we reference the original iPad all the time.

The label on the back simply says "iPad".

Watch the iPad video. They call it iPad (3rd generation).
So they use the same generation names like they do for iPod.

People are taking this "the new iPad" name way too seriously. Apple has ALWAYS done this.

The new Macbook Air
The new Mac mini
The new iMac
The new iPod

You can call it whatever you want. The name is not "the new iPad". It is "iPad". This is just how they are marketing it as a new product, just like anything else.

It'll be like the iPods. So it'll be the iPad 3G. But make sure you don't get an iPad 3G 1G! (or iPad 1G 3G?)

You're so right on this. They likely didn't use iPad 3 because in the past, most people that purchased the iPhone 4 thought it used 4G technology. It causes too much confusion for those not technically endowed. Those that want a 4G iPad might shy away from an iPad 3.

Not including a number in the name is a mistake. Yes it works for the Macbook Pro/Air/iMac, but those devices account for a much smaller percent of sales. They aren't nearly as ubiquitous, and the 'average Joe' doesn't have one. iPad and iPhone are status symbols.

Two years of the tablet revolution and you still don't get it. Tablets are not PCs and PCs are not tablets. Apple revolutionized the sector by rethinking that idea. Billions of iPads later, I think they were on to something.

Just call it iPad - The Third Generation. Use whatever Star Trek font you want with it. :)

new iPad

all the stuff with the name is weird... bummed about no siri mention... ordered a few already from EPP website got a discount... :)

Does anyone else think maybe Apple should outsource its launch date website? This is getting frustrating.

So, i wonder if this means we'll never see the iPhone 5/6. We might just get "the new iPhone"

i agree. i'm hoping ios6 for the ipad is more a bridge between ios and os x. it could offer a few more things to be really useful and more of a replacement of the normal pc. Keep all the aspects that currently make it great but add just a more options for power users (even if hidden from more casual users.)

i have a computer at work and none at home (the wife has one) and this is my first ipad. I'm opting for this rather than a laptop. I can use my work laptop in a pinch but it would be nice to be be able to use the ipad more and not need the laptop unless it's something really demanding.

I want to use it as a media consumption device but I also want to be able to get some tasks done when I need to. i suppose as processors improve we'll see options, or maybe some sort of doc where you can doc the ipad into some sort of docking station at night. perhaps thunderbolt will allow something like this at some point.

for now i will enjoy it for what it is and make it as useful as I can.

i know i will get tired of upgrading laptops, phones and ipads

The pundits and several posters here are tripping all over themselves to not be enthusiastic about the differences, stating or implying it is a minor update.

That doesn't pass the smell test. At the same price, battery life, general feature and operating method, and size, it offers surprisingly increased benefits.

It has network access up to 10x as fast wirelessly, so if you need/want to you actually can practically play wireless HD video away from a fixed internet spot.

It has about 4x the screen resolution.

It has about 2x the processor speed and 4x the graphics capacity so you do not see slower response despite the 4x visual capacity.

It is at some basic level (2G/3G) a world phone data access device.

It is pitched as a hotspot, presumably either with a minimum service level or encouraging you to consume data so you simply pay more when you use it.

It facilitates new classes of software previously limited to desktop and laptop devices with CPU, graphics, and memory chips which themselves cost as much as this entire device, but includes an entire computer platform.

That sounds at least "fair" to me and based on how I presented it, I think a majority of people reading this will actually think it "above average to exciting".

Maybe it's just me. I doubt it.

Rocketman

You got marked down for this post. Go figure.

Nice indeed, but nothing Earth shattering.

Can't wait to hear what you consider a earth shattering release.

What worries me is that they admit the focus is on the post-PC devices. The Mac is going to be less important for Apple.

was hoping 802.11ac

would be part of the announcement.

Maybe the capability is there (and will be enabled via software), but Apple is waiting until refreshing the Macs?

This isn't a revolutionary device. It does the same things. Apple seriously need to stop using that word. Or even their new word 'resolutionary'.

A revolutionary tablet would do new things and offer new uses. Not just an easier way of doing the same things.

Making this a device for different type of user, such as a photographer would make it revolutionary. Right now, it doesn't do this well.

But, this is obviously an improvement on the last version. But that's all. I guess I'm being a little pedantic about the word revolutionary, but using it for almost every product launch is ridiculous.
