I wonder what they are using as a central hub and switches? I have a Wink hub with z-wave switches at my home but Wink is stubbornly dragging on implementing HomeKit. They just released a new version of the hub and HomeKit still isn't an option.
There are many ways to implement them. IMO The best one would be a custom solution. Get a pi and put homebridge on it and run non-homekit things from there so that siri can recognize them. There are many things that are homekit ready even hue has a homekit bridge now, wemo hasn't released one so for those you need a jb+scripts or a custom bridge.

What a lame article, how about telling us WHICH devices are included and which manufacturer and model is used?

Yeah it's kind of a "hey - someone is doing something with some home automation stuff" type article. Maybe as an FYI type article for Macrumors that is sufficient, but I definitely would have liked to have known what hardware was being used as there is limited HomeKit support from mainstream automation hubs, such as Wink.
