wow

i can't believe how bad that looks. and lol at people saying it's the cameraman. sorry but good cameras work with idiots, the end. as a long time iphone lover and recent convert, i can safely say my nexus one is recording 720p that exceeds this quality by a landslide

Fandroid troll. He's panning too fast, the other video he posted is incredible.

That's an asinine statement if I ever heard one. By your logic I can place my d1 MIII in any joe's hand off the street and they can take good pictures with it?

Put up or shut up. Where is your fast panning video sample?

Fast panning will produce a mess even on Canon 5d2.

The raw sample quality is tops among compact cameras that I have seen, so exemplary in a phone.

Rly? Didn't the first iPhone cost that much (more when including subsidies)? Are you saying the iPhone 4 shoots video that's worse than a 1st gen iPhone? Oh wait, 1st gen didn't even shoot video.

Please post a vid from another phone for comparison.

Thank you!

It's 2010. Sure, the cam of the Iphone 1 sucked even more. That's no excuse for having bad cam in Iphone 4. For better results, check any video / pictures from say Samsung i8910, Nokia N8, SonyE Vivaz.

With the first iPhone 4s being delivered today, Apple fans are anxious to learn more about the device as users begin to get their hands on it. One of the major new features in iPhone 4 is the rear camera's ability to shoot high-definition 720p video, and while some sample footage popped up in the Czech Republic last week, people are clamoring for more.

One user who received his iPhone 4 today has put together a blog post with some sample images and HD video shot with the new device.

One of the videos taken by the user has been made available both on YouTube and in the raw video format, and we're mirroring the raw video here. [Link to Raw Video, 26.9 MB]

This image just goes to prove that the images on the Apple site have been touched up.
It maybe the biggest selling phone in the world, but it's not the best.
I'll wait for iPhone 8. It might be good by then.

Can anybody give any info on file sizes for HD video shot on the iPhone 4? My wife and I are getting the 16GB and 32GB versions, and I can't decide which I should take for myself.

Man up and take the 32. The fact that you have to ask is not a good thing.

Sorry guys, you will realize sooner or later the iphone 4 must be held extremely still to produce a smooth video, even then it will be shaky, almost useless. FaceTime especially, it's going to be jerky as hell because there is no Image stabilization (IS). They tried really hard to not show the shaking during Apples promo videos. This is a big draw back as we are used to seeing IS on most HD camcorder recordings. Everyone will know you have an iphone. But just like Mp3, convenience always wins over quality. One of the reasons I'm waiting on ordering one.

I totally agree with you. No IS really hinders the video performance. Stills seem fine but video is too shaky. Just looking at videos on youtube comparing a canon powershot with IS to the iPhone 4 videos you can see a huge difference. The IS makes a world of difference.

Alright, I snapped some low light photos with the iPhone 4.

More images and video are posted here on my blog:

Enjoy.

Mad props to AppleMojo for taking the time to indulge all of us. Congrats on your phone, and thanks again for your politeness. Ignore the trolls, as well as the other people that just hate life in general.

I think what most people are forgetting is that this is a 5MP camera that is built into an extremely thin phone. This was never meant to cut it when it comes to full-blown photo shoots, and it's not your money maker. It's an improved camera that takes very nice pictures and video. You don't see DJ's coming in here complaining that they can't play a gig from the built-in speakers of the phone.

Meh. Can't say I'm really impressed, it's OK but not great. Panning in video is pretty brutal, it's strobing probably because it's using too high a shutter speed. I'm also seeing a lot of compression artifacts. But hey for a phone it's fine.

+1...but i expected more this time

I thing I've noticed from using numerous phone cameras and camcorders is that when you shoot video of trees, grass and foliage it *always* looks a lot better than when you shoot a person, or something indoors, or pretty much anything else.

There is just something about foliage that makes video footage 'sweeter' and more detailed and therefore its deceptive.

What I want to know is what is the recording bitrate. That is the only benchmark worth a damn with so-called HD.

Can you point to "great"? Thanks.

I think this (from a Nokia N8) is more impressive:

to be fair though, your point is pretty meaningless.

that video was professionally produced by the nokia people. all slow, planned, and considered. yes it looks beautiful, but only because it is all done in perfect controlled conditions.

just like the imovie sample from the jobs keynote. looks stunning, but only because it was in perfect conditions.

your nokia video proves nothing. nor does the imovie sample.

the proof will be a few months down the line.

Well it is a sample only, so it won't 'prove' anything which is why I want to know the bitrate of the iphone camera.

However I would be very surprised if the iphone could match that Nokia quality even under the same conditions. If iPhone 4 matches that level of detail and contrast range, I'll be truly amazed. Let's see.

i actually don't know anything about bitrate - and will be interested to see how the iphone performs vis a vis others.

cheers for the info steve :)

It's 2010, when is Nokia going to make a smart phone? Samsung, Nokia, Sony, all capture at 720p. No discernible difference with that of the iPhone 4. All take great video for phones. For those who want to buy on specs and not experience, certainly go out and buy an N8.

That doesn't make any sense at all. If I have a camera on my cell phone then the quality of the cam is integral part of my user experience. If the image are crappy, my user experience is crappy.

(BTW Nokia started the smartphone phenomenon. Like 13 years ago. There's really no need for condescending attitude. You wouldn't have smartphones if Nokia hadn't believed that smartphones were the future. That's why Nokia invested billion to R&D of mobile data networks. Apple is just piggybagging here.)

My iPhone 4 arrived today and this post inspired me to take a bunch of photos around Seattle

Here are the full-resolution pics:

iPhone 4 camera test

BTW, I also took photos with a BlackBerry 9700 Bold at the same time and will post those photos for a head-to-head competition. So far the only thing that was better about the blackberry was that the screen was clearer while wearing polarized sunglasses...
