Just a word of caution. Do NOT try and use any of the glass screen protectors currently available for the new iPad Pros. The touch response becomes SERIOUSLY wonky. It is so bad I thought I had a hardware issue with my brand new 11" iPad Pro.

You’ve tried every single one of them? Or are you from Tech Armor, as usual late to the game, not shipping for 2 weeks, and desperately trying to keep people from buying from a more efficient company?

Reddit user GottaDeal confirms that the new 11-inch iPad Pro on-screen keyboard has a 12.9-inch keyboard layout thanks to the extra room from the removal of the bezels. It offers up tab, caps lock, and left side shift keys, unlike the 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

It doesn't get the row of numeric keys though, which I would say is the main advantage of the 12.9 inch keyboard layout.

Very nice except the price. My 1st gen Ipad pro is staying with me. Apple is going to price their equipment right out of the market.

Incorrect ‘Delete’ labelling of the on-screen keyboard Backspace key.

I bet someone agonised over using a one-off symbol for backspace or incorrectly using delete because it fits the limited, right-aligned key space better.

edit: Just discovered Apple uses delete in place of backspace on their US English keyboards even though they’re supposed to have unique functions.

I'm pretty interested in one of these as an on-call laptop replacement. Want something small I can carry around without being too big or weighing down my bag. I wish they would have made a Pro Mini one, but the 11' with the slim bezels should get the job done. I'm going to keep reading reviews and hopefully grab one as a Christmas present to myself.

My iPad Pro 11” just arrived this morning. Upgrading from the 10.5” Pro and very happy with it so far. I stopped in an Apple store earlier today to compare it to the 11” to the 12” and definitely think I made the right choice. The new 12” is nice but its still way too heavy IMO. Glad I bought the 11”.

Makes you wonder if user upgradable RAM is coming back to a few more macOS devices. The iMac 21" sure could use it. Agreed too that those changes to the Air and mini are bigger news than people realize. Apple typically doesn't reverse itself in those ways.

I love it when user reviews are so much more in-depth than professional ones. Good job guys!

I am still waiting for mine to arrive. Ordered the 12.9" version. Looking forward to having more screen real estate without adding quite as much bulk. I don't really care if it's bigger because I feel like the iPad needs it for productivity going forward. In a few more years the bezels will be completely gone anyway and it will get even smaller yet again. I think iOS 13 is really going to shine on these recent Pros. I think they might even start branching it off from the 9.7" model.

Looks great, but unless you have some rather limited or very touch specialized workflow this just won't cut it for most people. It sure looks nice and I bet the performance is stellar but that folio keyboard just doesn't give the same typing experience as a "real" keyboard.

A lot of applications and services are offering web-applications these days so you can do most things directly in the browser. But the experience isn't comparable to using the full desktop applications and alot of them won't even work in mobile web-browsers.

Combine this with the fact that we are starting to reach the same price-point as MacBook's and other decent notebooks on the market its not all that compelling. It sure has it benefits, but its limitations just outweight's all its benefits unless you have a workflow where the Apple Pencil and the artistic values it provides will be essential to you.

What I would prefer would be to have something like a 2-in-1 device where you have a device that combines this iPad Pro and the MacBook Air with a detachable display. Have it run macOS when docked to the keyboard, giving the full desktop experience with a great keyboard and touchpad. And when you detach it starts running iOS and becomes just like this iPad Pro. It doesn't seem all that far-fetched when we look at how far the hardware on these iPad's have come and how powerful their SoC's really are.

We need a way to get macOS running on ARM, and Apple needs to find a elegant way to integrate the iPad Pro with a detachable keyboard and we are pretty much Golden.

Funny, my 2016 MBP doesn't give me the same typing experience as a real keyboard either.

I would like to get the 12.9in, but sadly I have no use for the new version since iOS lagging way behind.
Hopefully next year they'll full file system support, full USB support, and 2 USB-C's.

Hi pals! I come from the Apple Store, I've been playing with an 11" iPad pro with and without its folio keyboard case, and I just can say... I'm in love for this new Apple product. It's like the tablet (not laptop, not computer) we all wanted, since the iPad inception.

Tried it with the new Apple pencil, the folio keyboard is more confortable to use than the one we have on the new MacBook line.

But the tablet itself? It feels light, robust, easy to handle, fast, intuitive...

Honestly, I'm in love with this device, sadly it exceeds my budget, although I can understand why Apple chose to overprice it: people gonna love them to the extent of willing to pay that premium price.

I'm really liking it. I take a lot of notes and GoodNotes already updated their app to use the double tap feature to change between eraser and pen. Easy to hold. I have the smart folio (non keyboard) and it doesn't get in the way of the pencil clipped on the side. That was my concern before I bought it.

Is your Smart Folio Keyboard bouncing?

Is anyone else having this problem? Just got my new iPad 11" with smart keyboard folio and every time I tap on the ipad display it bounces. I can tell it's because the material that folds over is really stiff and if you look at the photo, it's not sitting on the ground... instead it's floating in the air. So when I touch the screen, it bounces. Is this a design defect or do I just need to get this replaced?

I got the 11" model. Absolutely love the new iPad itself, it feels like an enormous step up from my 9.7" pro. The new folio case will take some getting used to. I hate the color, so I'm going to have to find some stickers or something, and I don't really like that the keys are exposed on the back. I do like that it has two screen positions, and the keyboard itself is nice and responsive. The pencil is lovely, but the magnets that hold it on are not super-strong, so I keep knocking it off the ipad when I go to reach for it. I think this is something I'll get used to, or I'll just keep the pencil separate in my bag, it's not a big deal.

All in all just a few small quibbles, I am delighted with the iPad itself.

Congrats. As the previous owner of two 12.9" models, I was 75% sure I was going with the smaller 11" version 3rd time around. That was until I saw the new 12.9. Yes, it's still big; but easier to hold, lighter and smaller. Made me realize how unwieldy the last model was.

I love the new iPad. The screen is amazing. The pen is awesome. The new keyboard is more responsive.

Three things I don't like:
1. In portrait mode, I keep knocking the pen off. Though strong magnet, landscape better.
2. I keep covering the camera with my left hand. This stops FaceID working. Found it better to turn the iPad 180degrees but then the pen is at the bottom. It's not a big issue, more just adapting as small bezels and big hands not ideal and
3. OMG, Hate this. The home button doesn't disappear in most apps. If watching movies at night on VLC or others, there is this bright white line at the bottom of the screen. I believe apps developers can write code to ensure the line disappears. Seems like a MAJOR oversight.

I can't stress enough to check out any 3rd party apps you use i.e. VLC, PlayerX, etc and whether it will bother you when watching movies or working at night. Strangely enough, it disappears in YouTube. At least this is something. Still, very annoying that you have this issue on a VERY expensive tablet. Call out to a developer to write an app that removes the home button line.

I am a big fan of the new iPad and it’s Potential. Only problem is that it is, just as the watch, HomePod, Apple TV and many other product by Apple one of these Banana products ripeing at the customers well after the purchase.
The iPads power is worth nothing if the apps do not support the hardware.

I bought the new 12.9” iPad Pro to replace my first gen (2015) of the same size. First impressions:

1. When doing standard functions (web surfing, social media, etc), the difference between the two iPads speed speed wise is minimal at best. In fact, my 2015 iPad is actually faster opening some programs. I’m sure when it comes to heavy workloads the 2018 should be much faster.
2. The 2018 version is so much smaller than the 2015. Seriously smaller. It feels more comfortable to hold.
3. The Face ID works great no matter which way you are using the iPad.
4. The loss of the headphone jack stinks. The adapter is only $9, but still. Apple should have thrown one in the box.
5. The screen is gorgeous.
6. The USB-C is a step forward. Charging is very fast. I’ll need to buy an adapter to do the initial sync with iTunes though.
7. The speakers are very loud, especially compared to the 2015 model.
8. Unless you absolutely love the home button, you won’t miss it at all.

Wow... no seriously, VERY creative and insightful comment!
You’re totally right- nobody has said that or thought that. Thank you SO much.
I really was expecting to be able to play all my Steam games on my iPad. I (like everyone else, EXCEPT for you) am so woefully ignorant, I thought that adding FaceID to the new iPads was suddenly going to make them full laptop/desktop replacements.
Very thoughtful of you!!! Obviously, people here on an Apple forum are going to have ZERO inkling what iPads can or can’t do! We’re all lucky to have you.
You should probably take it like a quarter step further & explain what a tablet is too... that would be equally helpful to people! =)

Saying something that you don’t actually mean, or is the opposite of the truth... on an online forum, to incite people to argue against what you’ve said is NOT referred to simply as “a joke” in common vernacular. It has its very own term to refer to that specific type of commentary- it’s known as “trolling”. It’s commonly considered the very lowest form of humor... like, a few levels below toilet humor, or jokes about the holocaust... it’s tasteless, tacky, & self-serving.

It’s called sarcasm. Every single review has said the exact same thing: “It’s not a laptop replacement.” That common thread in all the reviews has been extensively discussed in these forums for over a week now. The poster obviously was referring to this jokingly — you can tell it’s a joke because he says “I don’t think anyone has mentioned yet” when obviously it has been the #1 thing mentioned about the new iPads.

NO! There shouldn't be black bars on my new 12.9" iPad! The screen size and resolution are the same as the old 12.9! This is not like the iPhone X. This is a rounded corners BUG!:(

Had an opportunity to play around with the new iPad Pro today and here are some interesting facts that have not been reported to my knowledge.

1. FaceID needs to be setup in portrait mode, after the initial setup it works in any orientation (I suspect this has less to do with RAM and more to do with software, meaning it is possible to make an aperance on iPhone X if Apple deems necessary).
2. The square-ish/flat design gives it the impression of being thin.
3. Speakers have improved marginally.
4. Bezels seem thinner all-around.
5. Folio cover at times looses its magnetic grip from the device.
6. Folio requires two connections to activate the KB (SmartConnector and the magnetic indentation on the cover.
7. Folio uses the same butterfly mechanism as the previous case and MB/A/P, however due to the fabric feels way better.
8. Pencil 2 with its matte finish and balanced weight feels great, plus no more rolling off a flat surface (only thing missing is a 4 light LED indicator for charge status without connecting to an iPad Pro).
9. The 2018 iPad Pro with the Folio case resembles a Surface Pro with its flat design cues.
10. If macOS ever gains ARM support or able to run on an iPad Pro, this device is better in design, feel and weight compared to a 2018 MBA, even the display is superior.

11” iPad Pro seems like the perfect size to travel and use, it is reminiscent of my favourite 11” MBA that was discontinued. Hopefully iOS supports full USB-C accessories such as USB drivers, SDcards, etc. At present it has limited support due to software not hardware.

This product resembles a digital picture frame, a very expensive one I might add.

I went from 10.5” to 12.9”. The device itself is phenomenal, you are just holding the content on the screen, and that is it. The bezel size is perfect, any smaller and you would be constantly touching the screen.

I like the Smart Keyboard, and I actually don’t mind the keys folding behind as much as I thought I would. The keyboard “locks in” via magnets when folded back, so it feels more solid than the last gen. The two angles make it worth it IMO, and I prefer ripping the keyboard off when just using it as a tablet anyways.

One thing no one seems to have mentioned, is that yep, the keys fold behind, but unless the iPad is docked in “typing position” the keys don’t actually do anything when you press them. So, no biggie. How much wear and tear this will put on the material of the keyboard case is a different story, but you don’t need to avoid the keys or anything when it’s folded behind the iPad.
