I noticed that my SSD Speed tests appeared a little off now that more benchmarks are coming out. I re did mine and it looks like something impacted the initial tests that I did, as I run them almost as soon as the new Mac was ready to go. Also at the time I was running 12.0, I am now running 12.0.1. So not sure if it was indexing or 12.0.1 brought some new improvements. So I updated all the tests. It looks like SSD performance was the main change, but that has probably helped a number of other tests.

On my '21 16" M1 Max that I picked up today, I just set my terminal to "white on black" and tried to duplicate what you're showing here (in "slo-mo").

I see none of this affect whatsoever - it just looks like I'm dragging a window as per normal. I even changed the window opacity to 100% - no ghosting/trailing whatsoever.
I wonder if there is a bad batch of screens? Hope not.

provided I don't look at my credit card account!
Lol
Pricey. I keep my laptops for 5 years, but this pushes my limits.
Yeah, they are extra pricey. I wanted one to ease my eye strain on smaller 13” screen (old man’s problem) but it’s so incredibly priced I have a very hard time saving for it.
The stores in Chicago had the base 14” and 16” models plus the $2499 14” model available for in-store pickup, but that was about it.
Apple almost always have base model left over for in-store pickup as BTO options are more popular imo.

I’m curious why all the pros that have been asking for an HDMI port and SD card reader are totally cool with the inferior HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1, and having a slow SD card port on a $6K machine? The current Apple TV has HDMI 2.1. I find it impossible to believe that the hardware in these machines are incapable of making this work.
It‘s a bandwidth limitation. The bandwidth from the removed 4th TB3 port is used by the HDMI and SD slot.

HDMI 2.0 can use 18 Gbps. UHS-II uses about 2 Gpbs. There *may* only be 2 TB3 controllers, one for the two left side ports and one for the single right-side TB3 plus the HDMI plus the SD. When shared and fully utilized that’s 20 Gbps per port. That’s all the bandwidth used.

HDMI 2.1 uses up to 48 Gbps. Even if a full 40 Gbps were available ”Computer says no”.

You might have missed that the three thunderbolt ports are well capable of driving the HDMI 2.1? Likely such monitors come with the direct thunderbolt cable anyway, or you get a dongle. Point of that port is to be the easy straightforward connection to the 90% of all the monitors & projectors out there when your on the move - no hassle when keeping presentation at the client. High-end monitors with power charging and us docs connect through the thunderbolt anyway.

Really just missing the Touch Bar. Came in handy in lots of situations, plus can no longer see the line of emojis for texts... no predictive texts showing up.

Unsure how to make the keyboard brightness turn on or higher / lower.

Not too happy with the sides being cut on the bottom again. M1 design was nicer that way.

It feels like they re-did 2015 for no reason other than because they can.

Glad to have MagSafe back though.
Except 2015's design is a lot nicer.
This is pre 2010.

Software wise its silly they dont offer a perfect black dark menu just a dark mode transparent menu.
100% with you on this, it so obvious that it’s exclusion makes me think apple want you to see the notch, I’m sure a third party will create something to achieve this.

You like the notch? As in more than being merely indifferent to it?
I for one like the notch, for me it’s a matter of perspective, is the notch area encroaching on the screen or is the area next the notch new usable space, I can see both sides but personally like the extra space, just sayin

I have literally never in my life seen a community of people so obsessively driven to find anything to complain about. It's bordering on pathological.
It's expensive and Apple lives on hypes.

For sure we see high expectations and attention to details, exactly what Apple claims for themselves for decades.

Too bad pixel response time of these new screens is awful. It's similar to iPad Pro 11, response times are in the range of 28-52ms. There's so much trailing/ghosting going on it's crazy. AnandTech reviewer posted a video of it in action.

EDIT: forgot to add video:
It's shot in slow mo because it's much harder to capture it on camera than when looking with your own eyes.
So if it's harder to capture in real speed then is it really an issue? I mean if you have to record it in slow motion to create the narrative you want it doesn't seem reasonable.

I think I made a mistake with this choice and am having some early buyers remorse - but we’ll see. I’m still transferring with Migration, so I cannot comment on performance. I’m sure it will be wonderful and blazing fast, which is my biggest priority. However, first impressions on “aesthetics” … Upgraded from 15” 2015 MBP. Now Have M1 Max 14” machine. Differences: the weight and the design. Both kind of have me bummed. I do not like the new design, I hate the new keyboard. The black on black is not attractive. The boxy/thicker chassis, compared to the older more curvy look, is not appealing to me. Yes I know I probably should’ve realized this before ordering but so be it. Thought I’d give it a chance. I may return it for an Air, given the above. The other issue is the weight. They feel about equal, despite apple specs saying the older one is about a pound more. I traded down screen size expecting something less bulky …
How’s the fan noise on the Max?

The moment I unpacked mine I was like omg it is just like my 2012 retina MacBook Pro 13 inch. Just in space grey instead of silver. It is pretty much the same size and weight. Of course the display is what stands out but yeah, it’s pretty much an updated 2012 MBP (not saying it’s a bad thing).

I do not really notice the ProMotion but I never noticed it on my iPad Pro either
Same weight or lighter? I don't mind the design of my 2012 rMBP but lighter would be nice, otherwise I'll continue doing my forearm workouts.

Mac screen is 120FPS, if you record it in 60FPS you lose 50% of frames and when you upload it to twitter, etc. you lose a lot of video quality. All of this makes it hard to show what you're talking about.

I have iPad Pro 11" with this similar crappy screen. It's easy to see ghosting with your own eyes but when you record it in 60FPS it looks fine.

I don't want to create anything, because I REALLY wanted to buy this laptop because my 'old' 2018 MBP is the only screen left in my home that's sub 120Hz.

It’s not always in 120hz mode though….

So for the next few years Apple gets to brag about how each new MBP is “the thinnest MBP we’re ever made… since 2021”
