Pretty much what was expected; its an iPad 1.5 in iPad 2 clothing.

Saving my pennies for the real followup in a year. Until then, I'll have to make due with this iPad 1.

It's an iPad 1.5 in the way that the iPhone 3GS was a 1.5 upgrade to the 3G. Only it has an even bigger performance gap than the phone example. And the physical design has changed in this case too, among other things.

Now, the 3G is a pitifully slow and outdated piece of hardware. It won't support multitasking and can't run 4.x software smoothly even without the multitasking enabled.

When the 3GS was released the board was full of 3G owners who said its a minor upgrade. Now, it's almost universally recognized for what it really is (i.e. lacking). So it is with your iPad 1. A great device but seriously lacking in performance when compared with today's (well, tomorrow's) technology.

The iPad 2 is a full step upgrade. And then some.

I just wanna know what you do with the smart cover when it's not being used to cover it. None of the videos show anything but it being ripped off. Why would I take it off and then have 2 separate devices. Anyone know if it sticks to the back or something?

I've seen one PR picture that shows a guy reading from the iPad2 and his cover was covering the back of the iPad. I'll see if I can find the pic again.

Mossberg is an idiot, "best tablet for average consumers," well what's the best tablet for non-average consumers Walt? Let me know if there is one made.

Why? Do you see yourselves carrying that huge thing around to take pictures? Of course not, it shouldn't be even a question.

Why not? I would if the camera were good enough. Think of it terms of photo composition with a large format film camera with, say, 8x10" film.

To an extent, it's a moot point, since I don't think you'll ever fit a good enough camera in the form factor, but there are valid reasons to want a good still camera in a tablet form factor.

That is not the point at all... But if you make a product that is inferior across the board than other products and is more expensive... Yeah nobody should buy it.. Regardless of what it is...

If you are going to offer an inferior product, then you need to compromise on price.

You can't say I am going to offer you a car just like the toyota coralla that has 2" less leg room and gets 10 miles less per gallon and is 5,000 more. That is a non-starter.

It doesn't matter who makes the relative products.

You can offer anything you want, it's up to the consumer to decide whether to buy it or not. You're probably too young to remember Toyota, Honda and Datsun back in the 70's when they rusted away and fell apart in 5 years. They were junk. Now look at where they are today. And they did sell in small numbers back then.

Like how ATD said battery life is worse, but engadget got about an hour more of video playback. That seems like a big disparity, wonder how ATD tested it.
ATD had the brightness set to 75% while watching movies, engadget had it at 65%

512MB Ram should shut up everyone now..... ALSO gotta love uncle walts reviews lol, the guy never wants to just call it like it is with apple at times

not really. 1G would have shut me up and put a smile on my face. This just makes me smile.

explain why?

They can't. These spec hounds are all the same. I'm old enough to remember:

Them: "My new computer has a full megabyte of RAM!"

Me: "But you can only use 640 K because of the DOS ceiling."

Them: "Yeah, but I've got a full megabyte! A 40 megabyte hard drive too!"

Me: "But you can only use 32 of that because of the DOS partition."

Them: "Yeah, but wait till Joe sees my new computer! He's gonna die!"

LOL...wow. I simply cannot fathom those specs on a machine. And I'm pushing 30. I wish I could remember what my first pc (a Packard Bell) in 1994 had. I wasn't a specs whore back then.

1. you have no clue about android and are just repeating FUD
2. you must have banana hands because most humans can work it fine. I guess you need that extra room to balance your sippy cup on?
dunno why people are compalining about 512mb ram, its more then enough, dont compare it to android, cause the bloat software takes up half the memory.

512 is more then enough
Seriously, where can you hold the device if it doesnt have edges/borders. ITs just a stupid design decision to remove the borders around the screen. Stop writing when you have no clue. Your hands would cover the actual screen instead of the bezel.

Alsu usb 3 and thunderbolt require a whole intel chipset. Come an. Serioulsy dude.

Have you ever used Flash on Windows? It runs pretty flawlessly, CPU usage almost never spikes over 15% even in 1080p, Ive never seen Flash cause a single crash on Windows.

The only flaw is the security holes Flash has.
It crashes all the time. Maybe you don't use it.
I know, right! I want the same quality photos my $1800 Nikon takes!
Try a $1000 Sigma.
I never thought the I pad weighed a lot in the first place, its just really is a bigger iPhone at this point
People keep saying that as if it is bad. Pretty sure the iPhone & iPod Touch are very good machines. If you want one that is bigger, the iPad exists.

Thanks that'd be awesome. I'm thinking about going to buy one tomorrow, and just would like to know if I should expect to have a cover for it right away or look for a 3rd party one.

i agree 100% and those are both wonderful devices in their own right, my point being is that i personally would like to see apple create a tablet OS to take advantage of the hardware and ecosystem they have in place. Software could take the ipad to the next level in my opinion, right now it just feels "safe"

I think that the reason that the 512MB RAM is a totally moot issue is that you are only running one program at a time. This thing is not a Mac, you don't need 8, 12 GB to run your 20 editing programs at once and multitask. So long as that 512MB is able to load what's needed for every program in the App Store (one program at a time), video playback is smooth, and slowdowns are generally minimal, then who cares what the actual number is?

Actually, I just thought about something. There are numerous ways to trade RAM for processing speed (have more RAM and less CPU power). For example, 64-bit OSs are essentially using more RAM but running faster.

What Apple could do is throw a lot of RAM at the CPU issue on the iPad. Then you have a lot of RAM and a wimpy CPU to make for a great battery life :) actually I do not know at all if this would work.

I've always wanted an iPad, however i always thought the old one was slow. so the new one is out and has a faster processor and more RAM, so why am i still not going to buy....
They haven't upgraded it enough, sure the screen is ok, but everyone was expecting better.
Sure they've put 2 cameras in, but a VGA camera for photo booth on a 9 inch screen (that cant look good).
A bigger speaker, but apparently its quieter?

I wasn't expecting miracles, but i have to admit i was expecting better...
