A non-Apple device gets a high score in a review:

"Excellent objective review!"

An Apple device gets a high score in a review:

"Bias! Paid shill! Sad how biased the review is. Without the Apple logo it wouldn't have gotten a good review."

I'm curious - are the Android and Windows devoted websites and forums filled with Apple lovers who visit those forums simply to bash Android and Windows? I sure hope not, but it must happen, I just have no idea whether it actually does, and how much it happens as I've never visited their discussion forums myself (what's the point, being a fan of neither of them).

Here on this forum, it happens way too much (especially around product launches). I'm beyond fed up of these boring, ugly trolls who aren't mere visitors anymore, but have set up tents and erected make-shift shanty towns near our lovely and cozy development for the sole purpose being to annoy and harass us.

Fuzzy Math

I don't understand the Math on these reviews.

Pay the "20%" difference
Pay the extra $50 dollars

Nexus 7 $199 - 16GB
iPad Mini $329 - 16GB

~65% price difference
~$130 price difference

Where are they getting their numbers and their math.

I'll wait for the "Retina" version in seven months

I predict you'll have to wait longer than 7 months - they won't update this until Autumn next year. Go ahead and get it today, sure it's not perfect, but you'll have a whole year to play with it and enjoy it, then sell it (for not much of a loss) and buy the new one. That's my plan, and it allows me to get one today rather than having to wait till it's closer to the perfect device I want.

Shhhh. If you say this too much your post might be deleted like some threads in wasteland. But come up with a new thread complaining about apple stuff is a-ok. There's always a new and fresh angle.

Maybe so. But here in the threads it's mostly the other way...

A non-Apple device get a high score in a review:

"piece of crap", "cheap plastic", "fragmented", "isn't retina", "can't run Apple apps", etc.

An Apple device gets a high score in a review:

"shut up and take my money", "of course... it's Apple", "nobody can do anything Apple does better than Apple", etc.

Furthermore, a patent case goes against Apple:

"patent system is obsolete", "outdated patent system", etc

Patent case pro Apple:

"take that <insert other company name>", "die <other company name> die!"

And furthermore still: Apple says something is bad...

"It is bad", "It crashes my <insert Apple software/hardware name> 10 times per day", "Die <that thing> die"

Then Apple rolls out their version of it:

"best thing ever", "it's never been this good", "shut up and take my money", "I'm already in line"

...and then about 2+ years later, some of us rewrite history in that Apple invented this and that, rather than just one-upped someone else's invention and then stole the show.

Point: if we're going to claim bias, we should recognize it both ways. Yes, there is bias against Apple by some... BUT there is also bias for Apple by some. Apple can do no right and Apple can do no wrong. IMO, the best posts that are actually meaningful to those looking for good information are posted by those who can sit on the line of objectivity.

wish i could block some of the known ones TBH.

All good reviews from my perspective. Apple has itself ANOTHER winner. Glad I ordered one and I can't wait till Friday to try it for myself! :apple:

But my priority is as a consumer...not what fills Apple's wallet or stock value. I have a hard time spending $500 for essentially a mini-iPad 2 LTE....only to have a Retina version trotted out next spring or summer.

Apple has always charged a premium for their products. I totally get that. But this doesn't feel like a premium product, it seems like a compromise. It's essentially a smaller iPad 2 for $70 less.

If you don't need one today, it is always better to wait for the next generation of any electronic device. So it is certainly your choice of whether you want to wait or not.. However, I don't think retina display is a easy thing to do in Ipad mini. If Apple can solve the extra back light, excessive power consumption and battery weight problem caused by the retina display for Ipad 3/Ipad 4, then they may be able to move it to Ipad 2. And there is still the cost issue.. It will be a while for the price of retina screen get down to ipad mini range. Ipod touch has retina display but it is only a 4 inches screen vs Ipad mini has 7.9 inches screen. the key issue will be power consumption and size of battery issue. Nexus 10 also has retina display with higher resolution than Ipad 3/Ipad 4 and the weight is 1.33 lb vs 1.44 lb for Ipad 3. So the newer technology make some progress on the power consumption and weight issue but not enough yet.

I am not sure I see any issue that Ipad mini has Ipad 2 internal (mostly, but I think the camera is a better one). I think the key is that when you are using it, whether it give you the premium feel that justify the extra money. Ipad 3/4 is very portable but not very mobile. I have an Ipad 3 and I get a hard time holding the Ipad on one hand for an extended period of time. I am thinking of buying a mini to use on trip or extensive reading that require holding the tablet for a long time. Ultimately the sales number will be the report card that tell us whether Apple screw up by pricing Ipad mini higher than Nexus 7 and Amazon Fire HD. So far the indication is good..

Watching the Apple iPad Mini presentation I could tell the guy had never actually lain in bed and tried to read a book. If he had he would know that a tiny bezel makes it almost impossible to hold the device and read. The larger bezel on the Kindle makes it much easier to read with.

It's amazing because all they would have to do is try to hold it with one hand while laying down. They would have seen you thumb covers a portion of the screen making it hard to read and uncomfortable to hold.

And you've tried this youself with a yet to be released Mini how?

There is a thing with a printed page called a MARGIN. Your thumb will not cover the text when reading a book.

The Guardian updated their 20% quote in the actual review. They admitted it was a sizable mistake on their part.

The extra $50 dollars I think was more of a general jab at it not mattering how much more expensive it is if the other product is crappy. In the actual review he is not giving specific pricing when he throws out the $50 line.

Um, yeah, Apple is a business and needs to make a profit on their hardware.

Google is giving you the Nexus at cost so they can sell you to advertisers.

The iPad isn't overpriced. The Nexus is underpriced...so Google can pimp you out.

Different business models.
Um, Apple pimps you out too, in case you thought they were an entirely different business model. They also collect user data. And they also make money on software by charging 30% for apps. And for goodness sake, stop spreading the misinformation about Google selling you to advertisers. I know you've been told several times its false.

...and then about 2+ years later, some of us rewrite history in that Apple invented this and that, rather than just one-upped someone else's invention and then stole the show.

What I see is Apple fans saying things like "Apple popularized the tablet/smartphone/mp3 player/all-in-one.", and then Apple detractors say "Oh No You Dih'n't! Apple did not invent those things!"

Keep Calm, and Wait for 2nd Gen

Based on Apple's history, I don't see the non-Retina display sticking around too long. The competition needs to think about all the other positive factors that's getting folks to buy in spite of the non-Retina screen and get their act together. I am wondering what the bulk buy prices will be for education.

I couldn't agree more. More on it below.

I disagree. Macrumors is a brand-centric forum catering to mostly people with interest in Apple and its products, and by its nature it's only natural to assume the forum tend to be filled with favorable sentiments toward Apple. That's the same for any forum with such brand allegiance, such as Crackberry, XDA, Android Central, etc, all mostly of people who like the brand and the products.

Yet unlike those other forums, here at Macrumors we have a fair number of people who participate only to criticize Apple. It's a phenomenon not seen in those other brand forums I frequent. In fact I don't think I know of another brand forum that's packed with so many who can't stop spending enough time in a forum catering to the brand they hate. Nor do I know of another forum where some posters keep saying a forum should stay objective/unbiased/neutral while they almost always say nothing but negative things about something.

Moreover you go to a regular technology site such as comment sections of The Verge, BGR, and Reddit/R/Technology, the bias is very one sided, everyone hates Apple and cries out "bias!" as soon as an Apple device gets a good review. Sure there are those who are biased toward Apple, but the number is skewed toward the anti-Apple side. It's evident in most of the comment sections belonging to reviews posted here too.

Yes, Apple collects user data, but their business model is not mainly on advertisements. Google's main source of revenue is advertisement. Google and Amazon are selling their tables at or below cost, that is a fact. So where is the statement from Google that Google is not selling our info to advertisers for their main source of revenue?

I'm a try before you buy kind of guy. Going to go to the Apple Store tomorrow and see what all this fuss is about. I always felt that that iPad was too large for my needs and am thinking the iPad mini would be perfect for me. Price is a bit steep and hopefully this sticks around for at least a year before an update.

GPS ? Why not.

The iPad mini needs a built in GPS receiver, such that it can be used with GPS based navigation aps like Garmin.

Like the iPod Touch, for the high price premium Apple is charging it should have this.

Without it, I won't be buying one.:apple:

----------

Overpriced compared to the competition which is sold at cost?

Without GPS it is over priced.

It reminds me of that old project adage 'don't tell me about the pain, just show me the baby.'

I have a hard time accepting that other companies are able to solve the weight/batter/display issue, but Apple can't.

After selling us on Retina for 2 1/2 years and touting it as a feature in almost every new product, I have a hard time believing it won't be in a Mini within 6-12 months. Especially when the competition is going to keep pulling away.

I do agree the 'report card' of sales will ultimately decide. Apple has reached the point every company dreams of where they can release anything to a market that'll happily eat it up. But I'm going to sit this one out and wait for the second generation.
