The 5c definitely looks better than I thought it would. I do, however, still have some issues with the whole new apple-turned-plastic-thing ... maybe it's just me.

Too expensive...

Was this supposed to break into the Chinese market? It's 4000 yuan. There are Samsung phones that do the same stuff for 2000. The average person in Beijing only makes about 4600 yuan/month. Just saying, if they want to break into the Chinese market, Apple is going to have to do better than that. Pretty much everyone over here has a Samsung phone :p

I'm not sure how Apple is going to convince people to buy last gen technology when the latest and greatest is only $130AUD more. That $130 gets you a doubling of speed, M7, better camera, fingerprint reader and of course the nice metal case.

We on this forum see these things but Apple sells most of its iPhones to people who are not the least bit interested in tech. They will fall for the colors, try it out in stores and see that it's more than snappy enough. Not only don't most people understand the specs they just don't care.

That is likely to be true but I'm not entirely convinced that the sort of people who fall for colours will be able to afford the $740 that the 5c costs (here). I also suspect that those who *can* afford the 5c will be tempted by the angular flagship 5s at the price of 'only' $870. You can still customise with cases, after all.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong and the masses will be drawn to the coloured plastic of the 5c like moths to a flame.

A combination of that and cannot factor in the logic of basic math. I will likely sound harsh on some matters like that because I have to deal with the most illogical people at times that it just drives me crazy figuratively speaking.

I will factor in for those who knows this an a plastic iPhone 5 that were were planing on buying anyway and so happen to like that half backed color design that Apple could not design correctly. Even after adding in total costs.

I will likely notice how snarky this sounds once it it no longer the middle of the night.

There were certainly some people who said it would be a flop. If you weren't one of those people, the comment wasn't directed to you.

I think there are 2 main camps that think it was/will flop.

1. Those that think Apple is taking a step backwards by using Plastic
2. Those that think for the material in the device, and being last years technology, it's a ripoff and you may as well get a iPhone 5s, making it (The 5c) a flop.

I fall into the later

I agree with you. If people don't see this as Apple's version of selling ICE to Eskimo's, then more fool them. Next years model will crack $999 for the iPhone 6 and $839 for the 5s, in it's new Poly-carbonate body.

so the truth behind the iPhone 5C was simple.

it was not meant to be an android killer, or a 'cheap' iphone.

this is a good thing for the company, means they aren't 'changing' who they are. apple sell premium. and Androids became the equivalent of windows. they will probably sell the most phones, akin to Windows selling the Most machines with their OS. but apple, if they are successful, will always sell the best. the best computers (Macs) and the best mobile computers (Phones/Tablets, and soon it might be wearables).

it was simply apple's way of NOT producing 2 types of Aluminium iPhones? perhaps too much money than what they want to spend on an old model?

apple made the plastic as 'premium' as they could within reason.

its an iPhone 5 still.

I don't see the allure of the 5c either. Apple pundits say it will sell like crazy and intellectually I understand their arguments. Yet I still find it hard to believe the 5c will be a huge seller, but again I'm not its target market.

If you preorder the 5C today, then you get it on release date.

When has anything Apple released survived all of its preorders? Usually it's 3-5 days, 1-2 weeks, etc.

I work at an establishment that is taking preorders for the iPhone 5C. It is NOT popular at this time -- maybe after it comes out and people experience it it will "sell like hotcakes", but as of right now, people do not care about this phone one bit.

But, but, but it can't sell well. It has to be a disaster. People on this board say it's crap, and they're never wrong, are they?

fighterfoo: so your one "establishment" not selling many 5Cs means that nowhere else is selling them either? The plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

Am I the only one who wonders on the validity of the reviews? I cannot help but feel that some pandering is required for fear they might not get an early preview in the future? Remember, the papers/magazines/sites rely on circulation to make money. No review = no clicks.

This criticism would apply to the iPhone 5S as well

There has been one poor review of the 5C, coming from a British publication that just said it felt the phone was less premium than the 5S, which is a legit critism. However, it's not reflective of the build quality or operating performance of the phone, which is said to be very good even by the most thorough critics like Anandtech.

"metal reinforcement it used in the plastic"

So the plastic doesn't make it cheaper? It doesn't seem like it would. I think it's purely a design thing.

It will make it cheaper. It takes a fair amount of time to mill out a solid block of aluminium into the iPhone 5 shell which means you need a lot of expensive CNC machines running at once to make a lot of them. The metal reinforcement inside the polycarbonate can just be stamped out quickly by the thousands.

Material cost wise it may not be a huge difference but the savings will be massive in time and labour.

It's Apple, they can remove functions, toss a year old phone in plastic and charge the same price and people will still buy it. Even if I don't care for it I could see it selling as well as the iPhone 5 after a year would.

They had ample supply. I am looking forward to my 5C on Friday.

The upside? If I decide I want that 5S experience, I can walk into a store three weeks from now and exchange my 5C for a 5S - it'll only be $100 more. Stock should be better by then. I can't take my 4S for another week.

What functions were removed? Functions were actually added.

I would bet that with this advancement we can expect to see a plastic flagship phone soon.

Honestly, I don't like the iPhone 5c/s design.
Unlikely Mr Ivy, I would not say that it is "completely amazingly redesigned" or "totally new". Whatever the superlatives they are using, Apple disappointed me with this "iPhone update".

Sorry this time I don't applaud :apple:.
My feeling during the Keynote and right after was that they lost all credibility…

I love how people think it will fail. It won't because it's a new iPhone. Apple is learning how to wring every ounce of profit out of this brand and I say good for them. You can't fail once you apply the iPhone name.

So when customers/fans voice their displeasure with the 5c, because it wasn't a more affordable alternative to the 5c, they were all labeled as 'paid Samsung shills'. But when actual paid shills make comments, the same folks don't dare bring this up.

*Still an Apple fan* *Still disappointed* *5c color choices are abysmal*
