I want to see a five bar histogram in the colors of the 5C's showing how the individual color sales volumes rated against each other.

I doubt you'll ever get to see that, but you'll know the least popular color(s) by seeing which ones get dropped/replaced when the 6C (I assume) comes out.

Am I the only one who wonders on the validity of the reviews? I cannot help but feel that some pandering is required for fear they might not get an early preview in the future? Remember, the papers/magazines/sites rely on circulation to make money. No review = no clicks.

Wouldn't this be the case for all reviews then, not just iPhones? Name me the last high to middle end smartphone that got a bad review. I don't think there is one. HTC One, Galaxy S4, Nexus, Moto X, Lumia,Xperia, etc. have all received great reviews.

What functions were removed? Functions were actually added.

I was not too clean on that, I was referring to things Apple has done with it's products in general. That was referring to when they changed the great looking iPod Nano to the funny looking sixth generation and removed functions from it while keeping the price.

The iPhone 5c is just a five and the 5s added a bunch of stuff, at least enough stuff for a yearly update.

I think people underestimate the huge and growing middle class in China. They are not unlike the rest of the world who covet and want to own an Apple branded product. They will spend a bit more to own an iPhone.

Say what you will about specs, or screen size, it boils down to emotion. People buy based on how they feel. And like it or not, colour is a powerful tool in drawing people in. I just wish they had a few more masculine colours.

Was this supposed to break into the Chinese market? It's 4000 yuan. There are Samsung phones that do the same stuff for 2000. The average person in Beijing only makes about 4600 yuan/month. Just saying, if they want to break into the Chinese market, Apple is going to have to do better than that. Pretty much everyone over here has a Samsung phone :p

The same goes for Europe. The cheapest 5C is 600 €, which is completely ridiculous, especially considering the target demographic.

So damn true!

Seen way to many man-years of development in firmware, FPGA cells, electrical hardware design and printed circuit board layout thrown in the cheapest metal box or plastic injection form to save a buck or so per unit.

This destroys first impression potential as some accountant screams he "made money" by increasing per-unit product margin in a build with no sense of artistry.

And they wonder why the sales were so soft ...

you do know the quote you referenced is not finished. He says its a resounding no in the actual review. Lets not twist things.

This is why there is a small brigade of us saying for the cost, you may as well go the iPhone 5s, unless you really want the plastic coloured body etc.

The 5s/5c choice has nothing to do with price. It's only $100. I don't understand why people cling to the idea that the 5c only appeals to people who can't afford or don't want to spend the $$ on the 5s - that's crazy.

I ordered the 5c because I PREFER it. I would have paid more for it. Besides color, it is .7 ounces heavier than the 5s, which is a huge benefit. The only reason I skipped the iPhone 5 was because it was so lightweight and junky-feeling. Now, finally, I can get a new iPhone that has enough heft to feel like quality! The 5c is the new flagship.

It appears to apply to many that don't pay attention to what they are buying. You don't call into that category as you know exactly what you are buying.

I have yet to feel the iPhone 5. The 4s felt fine yet there could be such a thing as to light if it makes it feel cheap or easy to damage. Like there is such a thing as too thin.

Lovely piece of plastic you have there sir :p

People will go for the 5c for the colors.

I like the 5C but I don't like the price.

Instead of making the plastic phone cheaper, Apple are taking up a bigger profit margin. I hope it flops, or they make it cheaper.

I even find that questionable as the colors are not that great unless past iPod colors. Apple used to have nice bright color which seems the way to go if they want to use color. I would also like to hear a reason for not matching up the face plate to the color aside from being cheap.

Today, I am flying back east to see my daughter at college. This weekend she is going to change carriers (better local service) and upgrade her 4S. I guarantee she will want a 5C......and she won't care one bit about the difference in specs.

Great! $100 saved toward college cost.....a drop in the bucket......but I'll take it!

Whoopty Doo

the 5c is only an iPhone 5 wrapped in plastic. No big deal o_o.

if youre referring to apple you have no idea what youre talking about -- iphone sales have not been published at all, let alone any indicators that its poor. further apple will undoubtedly not reveal model-specific sales; same as the ipad line, and as all of their competitors do in general (assignment: try to find any Amazon-published numbers of Kindle sales. hint: there are none).

and if you really think accountants are running apple, you havent been paying attention.

I see your point, the big difference though is that Apple product related stories result in considerably more interest (and thus traffic) than the HTC One, or Moto X will.

I cannot remember a BBC news article ever about the Nexus, yet they fall over themselves to write about anything Apple. Their last article I saw read more like an advert than news.

Right now, tech sites/journals need Apple more than Apple needs them. It is this desirability that will be the envy of other brands, Jaguar used to feel the same way about BMW.

Ok, a yellow tinted cheaper display too?

How is this only $100 less than the far superior 5S?? It should be free.

That is why the folk who run Apple make big buck while we sit in the cheap seat wonder what just happened?

It looks like Apple is targeting the 2 year subsidy cycle with the 5C. Remember Apple just announced a store trade-in program a couple weeks ago? I just look up some old device trade in value in Amazon. An Iphone 4 can fetch $140, an Samsung S2 can fetch about 60-130 depending on model. So someone with 2 years plan can walk in Apple, trade in one of these phone and get a new 5C. Sure we can do it today with Amazon or many other sites out there, but you can't beat the convenience of an Apple store that can complete all the transaction at the same time including activating the phone in an attractive setting.

Every year there are more and more folks off subsidy and the truth is that not all of them know or care about the latest technology. For this group of consumer, brand, packaging, and design matter a lot more than state of the art technology. The color bumper idea on 5C is brilliant for the teenager/early twenty group. Just look at all the people that is using the mid level phone now. They have the same choice of paying up and get the best phone but they want to save a few bucks and not go for a mid level phone instead. And Apple can target a certain subset of this customer and give them higher trade in price of their phone. With Apple's gross margin on the phone, if they overpay the trade-in phone by $50 but get an extra phone sale, Apple will still make out like a bandit. None of the other company including Samsung can duplicate this strategy.

I think we should put 5C in the correct context. Last year Apple has 5, 4s and 4 as their phone line up. 4s sold about half as many units as 5. If 5C exceed 4s sales in the same cycle, 5c is a success. My view is that with the new color scheme, package as a new product, and Apple trade-in program, 5C will sell as well as 5s provide real growth in the Iphone line in term of unit, revenue and earning in the next few quarters.

As far as "why the sales were so soft" is concerned, we're talking pre-orders here. It's not even out yet, much less hard data on sales. Let's wait a bit before we jump to conclusions…..

You have a misunderstanding. I have seen other companies make the case cheap. Not Apple.

I'm a man and I really like the pink one. Is that wrong?

Shame they didn't call it "crimson", because that would've been far more manly.

Lol @ your "network friends".
I mean, analysts are guesstimating 2.2 million preorders so far.... but I don't want to undervalue the opinion of your two buddies, who CLEARLY would have an inside scoop on how many people are staying home & preordering the iPhone 5C online.

You can't undermine the reliability of a comment by referring to "guesstimating" lol!

Anyway....seems my "network friends" were pretty close.....

"Insiders from two of the companies told the BBC they suspected Apple was trying to drive sales of the cheaper 5C model, but that their own figures suggested customers had been hesitant to place orders."

"One network spokesman said they had "crates and crates" of the 5C"
