No 16GB configs for pickup though. Honestly, no one should be buying 8GB.
'No one' should be buying is a big statement. Windows laptops are still being sold with 4GB some. Someone I know even bought a recent new Dell with not 8GB nor 16GB, but 12GB (8+4 sticks), weird combination.
So much so that several responses after yours is about people actually buying 8GB versions.
Honestly, I have a 64GB iMac 2020, a 16GB iMac 2013 and a MacBook Pro 15 16GB 2014 and for 90% of use cases that ram is unused except on the 64GB work horse.
I contrast it to the iPad Pro with 4GB, I use it a lot, procreate gives me on most useful resolutions ~200 layers, plenty enough, snappy, etc... this is the same mindset and architecture, for most people 8GB will be enough.

A link to a forum to a tweet about the potential of fitting 100GB+ of texture in 16GB of Unified Memory: https://blenderartists.org/t/mac-m1-and-blender/1264658/32

Why?

8GiB is more than enough for me and I don't want to pay over £1000 for a machine. This one came in at £898, which is peanuts :)

I would if I didn't need a laptop now, redesign could easily be 2022.

I think it will be a plenty good machine, worst case just use your return window if it is really really hampering, but I doubt it. I think they are going to be great machines. I want one but can't justify it.

MacBook Air 1TB 16GB RAM is available for pickup. Scheduled one for pickup on Thursday.
That's GREAT to know... I really wonder how big of a difference is Air vs MBP.
And is that the 8GPU cores version?

Because 8Gb is enough for you, others can't have 16?
That's not what he said (see first quote above), the response is towards someone saying that NO ONE SHOULD HAVE 8GB. Others can have 16GB, it's there, on the webpage, ready to order, just have to wait or get some of the other like @kgraf6 pointed out.
Hopefully in not long on the next batch of tier you could have 32GB and 64GB too, so everybody can have 8GB 16GB, 32, 64, etc

Yeah, it’s the 8 core version. I only realised there was a 16gb model available for pickup when I saw a guy on YouTube pick one up from an Apple Store (here in Aus) as part of his unboxing video.

Really wanted 16GB but didn’t want to wait 2-3 weeks to receive it 😬😂

Oh well, check the videos on MaxTech and Max Yuryev youtube channels, the guy tests the lowest end MacBook Air and it smokes everything. Absolutely everything, yes it throttles minority when put under long term pressure (3 times rendering tests of 10mins of full blast) but nothing critical. It’s mind blowing through and through... LoL all maxed out, 8K realtime footage that not even his $15k Mac Pro managed to handle. All that on the 8GB and one less GPU core one.

I think... you will be fine? :p

Me wants now too.
