Just lovin it
Well, first whole day using the MP for work related tasks.
2 Parallel windows open, XP and Vista, using XP for mundane day to day business tasks, just playin around in Vista, and using OSX for email, Word, Excel, surfing the web. Not a single hick-up, or slow down, ran like a champ.
I mainly use my computers these days for work, very rarely play games any more. But do a lot of multitasking on my PC's. My former rig was running an Intel QX6800 Quad core, with 2GB of memory. It played games well, but I think lacked in the multi-tasking. Most likely it was a limitation of the OS, as well as the RAM Capacity. XP 32bit is capped at 3GB of memory, anything above that, will not be recognized by the OS. Even with 4 10,000rpm raptors in RAID 1+0 on an Areca Controller, not the imbedded ICH crap, I would stil get what seemed like I/O contention, never ran tests to prove it, but it's what it seemed liked.
MP are definitely lacking in the video card area, the top consumer card being a 7800GT. I have a couple of those laying around from other PC builds, just like I had the X1900XT 512MB laying around, we are talking about 1-2 years in the closet old. The X1900XT is sufficient for decent game play, won't touch an 8800GTX, but nothing really does at the time. But for the day to day use, drinving the 30"ACD at max rez, it works fine and more than enough to get the job done.
The dual 30"ACD looks hot, but I don't have the real estate on my desk for that at the moment, posssibly later on.
I am definitly hooked on the rig, and a good friend of mine, who works in the same field as I do, just went out and bought a similar setup, after spending the day at my place watching me work on it, and him hacking away on his SMELL laptop. He could not belive how well it was multitasking, and not stuttering at all.
I was pissed at him, because I had to help him carry that stuff out, and 5th Ave was packed this afternoon, people were looking at us, like they wanted to kick our asses, and steal the goodies.
Oh, and Expose' is really cool. I always have a crap load of windows open, and it's nice to squeeze the sides of the Might Mouse, and all the windows show up on the desktop....Good Stuff!
