First impressions on my Mac Studio Display which arrived today:

  1. Basic display is 100% equivalent to the LG Ultrafine 5K display I had before. No visible difference.
  2. Overall feel of the design is clean and sturdy (unlike the Ultrafine)
  3. Basic unadjustable stand height is luckily about the right height for me so it works. It was nice to have the capability on the Ultrafine but I guess that contributed to the wobbliness.
  4. The speakers are very good compared to other built-in display speakers, nice spatial presence but very much lacking in low end. They're 30% as good as my professional monitoring speakers that I use to make music, but it will be nice to have as an alternative just to try my mixes on. However, having them BOTH on at the same time (by configuring them as a multi-output device) sounds absolutely amazing (unfortunately it makes controlling the volume difficult). Sigh.
  5. The camera is very disappointing. I really had my hopes up that it would replace my Logitech 4K Brio but no chance. First of all quite grainy. Also there appears to be NO WAY TO ADJUST THE SETTINGS so it just does it's own levels adjustments whenever it feels likes, making it USELESS FOR VIDEOCONFERENCING IF YOU USE A GREEN SCREEN (as I do).

So now I still have a 3rd-party webcam sitting on top of my fancy new monitor :(

1.How are the corners? Is there less IPS glow, or is it the same as the LG?

2. How cool/warm is your panel?

3. Did you notice any backlight bleed?

I am glad I held off as I want a Pro capability that IS upgradeable. The new Studio Display is lacking in a lot of areas IMHO.
Still a 5K, retina without scaling. With an incredible panel. Really few choices if you want a true retina with a graphical user interface of 2,5K. 4K display are too low res for rendering retina and giving you work space.

Saw it in store today. The new 27" display looks surprisingly small with that thinner bezel and no chin. At this point a 32" would be the way to go i think. But the display looked great, reflections were well managed, sound was awesome, yeah the webcam looked sucky, but who cares, its a webcam. The lifting mechanism on the upgraded stand is excellent - if buying I would think it the way to go: very smooth action, and you can lift laptop lid style without tipping the unit over or anything - well weighted. You can instantly turn your setup into a standing desk (depending on how tall you are i guess). The Mac Studio looked great, Final Cut opened up a huge project in .5 of a second, all the cabling everything so clean and tidy. All in all a great package, but it's surprising the way the 27" felt small, kinda like the way 40" TV's feel these days and 55's and 65's are the new norm. The 32" XDR next to the 27" looks like the way to go, but who can afford that. Would be awesome if they discontinued it and offered it cheaper in 2022, like the way the original Macbook Air was mega expensive, but came down in time. Studio HDR 32" lets go Apple!

No obvious glow or bleed. Very solid. I used
to test.

The panel is reasonably warm all over actually. I can see why they have a big grill right across the entire top (now I'm worried about dust falling in there).

Given the extent of build-to-order configurations, I can't imagine any need to upgrade for the forseeable future. I mean M1 Ultra with 64 core GPU and 128GB RAM...that won't last you 4-5 years until you buy a whole new computer anyway? Never understood "upgrading" computers, especially Macs. When the time comes, just sell on the secondary market for Apple's strong resale value and replace with the latest technology in every aspect of a new machine (chip, memory speed, latest wi-fi, bluetooth, etc.) Wait 5 years and repeat.

Does anyone know what this little pill shape is for under the Mac Studio?

Also, notice how it says made in Malaysia ?? and not China ??, that’s interesting.

Good to hear. Havent seen a Malaysian made Mac since the G4 maybe G5 era.
Was waiting for mini Mx Pro, but will gladly cop the premium to avoid made in China.
If only the display were made there.

Great countries , great people, shame about the politicians but you can’t have everything, got lots of relations in NZ they love it over there .

Its probably a security slot

Didn't some lines of the recent iMac also come from USA? Apple has been splitting supply chains especially for larger units like desktops and displays where freight weight is a real cost.

I seem to recall my G5 white iMac made in Taiwan even.

Anyone know the Studio Display box dimensions by chance? Have to transport mine on a commercial flight after receiving it and trying to plan ahead a little. Thank you!

Unboxing photos, sharing initial thoughts and first impressions.

If you’ve been here a while, you would know that MacRumors literally post these types of threads for every Apple product when New Zealand/Australia receives theirs first.
They do so by copy pasting the last one and sometimes forget to edit the post at all places. Like this one, which was obviously a copy paste from the MacBook Pro release.

could you please tell me the dimensions of the box?

Does anyone know the shipping weight for the Studio Display?

13.9lbs (With tilt-adjustable stand) 16.9 lbs (With tilt- and height-adjustable stand) 12.1 lbs. (With VESA mount adapter).
^ probably definitely quoting the net weight of the display from the tech specs page.

Mine was 11.65kg in proper units (or 25.7lb in weird units) for the VESA version, according to the shipping details.

Probably add the difference between to figure out roughly the other stand types.

I agree with you. The people who talk about keeping their computers over five years, don't need the power that is in the computer right now. A pro who needs the Ultra right now, will need a new computer well within five years no matter how much the computer is upgradeable. I have friends and family members who regularly use Macs for 7 or more years, but it is for casual use. Two of my friends used to buy Mac Pros and just load them up with storage and buying upgrades over the years which they would install as the computer aged. But the most computationally difficult stuff they were doing with them was editing pictures of their kids. What I was doing was buying iMacs and then handing down my iMac after about four years to another family member. We would casually debate who was doing the more logical thing and both thought we had the right strategy.

Yes I've been here for a few years, well nearly 14 years.

I admit to not following these threads when they're posted, but I usually see dedicated threads in respective product forums for unboxing and pictures.
This is the start of the (semi-) new line...so its big news for many. Gets top billing.

Tons of benchmarks out already. Also, Max's performance is already known from MBP so what are you after?
It is simple. Read the reviews, watch the test from the Macbook Pros with M1 Max...

Or look for the M1 Ultra tests and divide the results by two. ?

The attention to detail is stellar!
