Like others have mentioned, its apart of the contract. When I bought my 3G S, I was given paperwork that showed the various costs of the plan and what it would be total each month. It also shows how much the first bill will be since your'e paying for the first and second billing cycles. You should have had a rough idea of what the bill would have been as soon as you finished your purchase.

Not sure if this is standard but my first AT&T bill is only $136+ (100 for the services + $36 activation fee). How does he get charged for two months in advance and I didn't?

You got bunch of prorated charges from messaging + Data
Also, if you have either 36 dollars activation fee or 18 dollars upgrade fee on the account. I would call customer care and ask them to remove this fee. Ask them nicely and they will do it for you.

I don live in an apartment, I wanted to cancel my contract after first month how dare they ****ing charge me for months I didn't use yet!!!

Genius give them a call and they will explain it to you, it is really not that complicated. They bill in advance, like all carriers, if you cancel they will prorate the difference back. As you venture into the world and sign contracts you should really learn to read and understand them.

I know all about the ETF. I wanted to pay my first month and jump off this damn ship. If i Canceled before my first month I would need to return the phone. Now I need to pay TWO MONTHS In addition to the ETF. This is ********. Why does signing up for an AT&T contract feel like signing a contract for my soul to satan?? If they think im paying for another month they are very VERY wrong.

If you were charged for a month advance, and you cancel your contract, then the month advance should count towards the ETF.

P.S. I love it when people lose their minds on the internet. You rock!

this never happened when I was on T-Mobile.

OP why don't you stop raging about this and just read your first Bill. It'll give you all the details you need about why they charged you so much. It's probably $70 just for the bill with Tax/Fees, then there's an Activation fee of $36. They probably charged you a pro-rated month because you came in after the billing cycle closed. Really they probably charged you for a month and a half of service in the PAST that you've already consumed. Only way you'll really know is by reading the bill. What makes you think that people on here would know specifically what you were charged for? Sign into the site wireless.att.com and choose view full bill instead of raging on people that are merely highlighting your inability to read (as evidenced by your inability to read your bill and your contract).

OP, you realize that you pay IN ADVANCED for all your phone bills? that's why you're pro-rated the first month...

for instance:

say you get your bill on the 1st of every month. so you got your bill for the 1st of july, you owe them for july. if you incurred any extra charges for the month of june, they'll be added to your july bill.

that being said, when you sign a contract, you signed one mid-june. so you get charged from mid-june to the end of june, then the remainder of july. THAT is your first bill.

so i'm gonna guess here.. (and estimate)

$25 for the remainder of june
$50 for july
$35 activation fee?
tax
and extra charges you incurred.

problem solved. go cry somewhere else

If you read the terms of your contract it would tell you about pro-rated. and if you still didn't understand, you could have asked google. don't post here saying nonsense.

that's all.

If you're unable to pay the whole 150 at one time, you can call and maybe get them to waive the 36-dollar activation fee. Then you can probably get them to let you pay it in a couple installments.

Chill out, man.

This really is part of the contract that you signed. Might want to go find yours and read it. ;)

wow american contracts suck.

i have never paid over £24.49 for my contract.

Hey OP, I'll trade with you, mine is approx $575/month every month. Ya don't want to know what it was the first month we started it.

Cell Phone companies have pretty much billed a month in advance for the last 5-6 years. They used to bill in Arrears but they don't anymore. If you don't like it then cancel but you will find all cell phone companies and Wireline companies do this as well.

I agree its a surprise when you get two months at once but its common now. In way more things than just cell phones also. Sounds more like someone bought something that is stretching the budget and when two months hit at once money issues have come up. So sorry for your luck but second to switching to a cheaper provider this is life.

My first month is close to that. It's like 10$ over my monthly charge plus activation fee and tax.
