When cooling is such an issue I don't understand the location?

The difference as lot as the outside air temperature is less then the temperatur of the CPU chip a fan will work for cooling. OK thay might spend a tiny bit more for A/C but they pay a LOT less for the real estate. And they make a LOT more solar energy.

Warehouse 13 might not be all that far off the market. The back-ups for the other data centers need an offsite as well as some fail-over. You could pair them but at some point if Apple is doing archival back-ups for millions of users' data that's just soaking up space. A fraction of which those folks almost never use or look at they'd need a site that was more heavily skewed toward archiving than in rapid, active transactions.

It is also just a 4hr drive (barring traffic drama) from Cupertino to Reno. If the Bay Area stuff is knocked off line by the "big one" it is possible to evacuate some corp data center personnel to Reno to set up shop for an extended period of time in a couple of cars. [ driving to the OR site is possible but a much longer trip. ]

No.. Really, it was just here. It just disappeared. Maps was always correct before???

They either have very good air conditioning systems or liquid cooling for their datacenter. The power they get from the sun can also power the equipment what cools down the water or drives the conditioning devices. The building is probably heavily insulated, too. Should be no problem at all.

reno nevada is NOT a desert. you are thinking the rest of nevada which is mostly desert. due to its elevation it's actually very cold.

Looks more like a military base. Just stuck out in the middle of no where?

The vast majority of Nevada is exactly just that. A Military base out in the middle of no where.

Desert has to do more with lack of water and humidity than heat. There is a large desert in Antarctica.

The low humidity in the air and cheap power is actually more valuable than air temperature. Not to mention you'd be surprised how cold it can get in those desert areas.

Exactly, most likely you'll also have cooling via solar energy.

I think Mankind has evolved enough to figure out how to insulate a building and build air cooling machines.

It's definitely a gamble to assume Apple has aquired this sacred knowledge, but we will see if this facility errupts in flames sooner rather than later.

Besides the stolen Alien technology is located in a different base, so there's that.

Don't be a dick about it.

If you built that same building in Kansas, you have lower insulation and operating costs. Why Reno?

You sure about that?

Looks to me like it would be pretty much the same in either location. The numbers actually favor Reno in terms of heating and cooling requirements.

So why Kansas when you can save yourself some heating and cooling costs by putting the facility in Reno?

I think the OP is being funny not being a jerk. Lighten up a bit

Seems like a rather challenging place to keep hundreds of rack mounted machines cool in the summer.

Reno is not a hot place. It's pretty far north.

I have family near there (Carson City). It's not the middle of nowhere. EVERYWHERE in that part on Nevada looks like that.

Funny story about that. When this was announced my family said "Now you can get a job with Apple, move to Nevada, and be close to us". Hmmm... Let's see. Nevada or stay where I am on Vancouver Island. Trees, whales, seals, sea breeze, and wonderful scenery or...Nevada. Dust, sand, sagebrush, and rocks. Wow, tough call there. Sorry, but somehow I'm just not interested in moving. Even though it is Apple, no. Just no.

I'm on Vancouver Island too... up in Campbell River. :D

More like Warehouse 13 if you ask me.

My first thought too. haha

LOL, and what kind of job would one likely have at an Apple data center? Watching blinking lights and replacing failed components? Exciting ...

Advantages:
1. Cheap housing in trailer parked in hills
2. Perfect for loners, conspiracy theorists and disgruntled people
3. Can bring guns to work and shoot at reptiles you see while on LSD
4. Chance for 2nd income digging suspicious mounds for the mob
5. Can sneak into all you can eat buffets
6. Can see stars and UFOs on those clear desert evenings
7. Legal prostitution with local discounts
8. Can work while high and naked as there are no supervisors
9. Can snoop on everyone who is in the iCloud
10. Don't have to fix anything as people don't expect iCloud to work anyway
