Or...

Apple could release a redesigned Macbook Air that boots to either OS X or iOS with a touch screen and a 180 degree hinge for roughly the same price as the Pro and its keyboard, and bring this conversation to an end.

Even if the Surface RT ran perfectly I really see nothing that would put it above the iPad, the biggest reason or that feature that places the Pro ahead is the wacom for me, I would likely check to see if there is anything else in the same price range that could work better. Without that I likely would just get a flip type laptop tablet or a base model iPad.

That would make too much sense, they make comments about not adding touch to the Macbook (Air) because of whatever reason they give when it is just about the iPad and sales. They could and that would be cool, I would love a Air, OSx, Windows, Wacom .......

If I want a great portable laptop, I can buy a MacBook Air 11 with 128 GB on sale at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago for $900. If I want an ultra light tablet, I can buy a base ipad mini for $330. Total $1230

Or, I can buy the Pro for $1000 (128GB) plus $130 Keyboard. Total $1130. It's either a very heavy tablet or a lap-incompatible laptop, with crummy battery life. If this is truly a mobile device, battery life is very important. It was really one of the features that made the ipad so wildly popular.

I get that people want to run full desktop apps on their tablet. I love the idea too. The problem is that the UI is all wrong. Most desktop apps are terrible to use with touch, especially on a small screen.

With cloud syncing of most commonly used data, email, calendar, docs, etc, there isn't much advantage in merging two devices (tablet and laptop) into one.

Extremely well stated.

I was excited to see how well the Pro would be received. After seeing how terrible it is as a laptop and tablet (especially in The Verge video review), I think I'll wait to see what they come up with in v2.

LOL at the reviews that say it is a good "laptop". More like a good mini-tabletop computer. It doesn't function in the lap at all...

I really wish someone would make a tablet that works WITH my desktop.

My vision?? I'd imagine a powerful iMac type PC that can run the latest games... and the screen was touchscreen. When I'm on the go... I can pull up my tablet next to my PC... then SWIPE the entire screen over to my tablet and BOOM goes the dynamite... everything that was on my desktop is NOW ON MY TABLET!!! Any documents, emails, or even games that I was playing is now running exactly the same on my tablet.

When I get back home and want to continue working on my desktop, SWIPE and my desktop is exactly what my tablet was just showing.

If I want both my tablet AND my computer to be running the same exact thing.. then I take two fingers together, swipe them apart and BAM! both devices are running the exact same thing!

Now THAT is the future I want for tablets!!

If you knew about Windows 8 you'd know it comes with built in anti virus.

Oh, so McAfee, Norton, and others are going out of business? I am pretty sure they will want you to use their product plus what ever built in protection Microsoft provides.

Seriously, Windows 8 start screen is very very ugly, Metro UI for desktop PC is a bad idea. I guess Microsoft UI designer must be inspired by Bauhaus art.

Better Bauhaus then Hundertwasser or Picasso for a UI ,
Hundertwasser as architecture is interessting though

You're going to accept Microsoft "criticisms" from a guy who calls himself Apple-Win on a forum?

Yes. Only Apple can produce a good product. Innovation is only good if Apple does it. Everyone else copied Apple, but Microsoft came up with their own interface so it's no good because they didn't copy Apple. :D

I never said they were going out of business. I said Windows 8 runs its own anti virus in response to the "Try running an anti virus on Surface and watch the battery drain". Its already rubbing an anti virus so that comment was invalid. The built in anti virus turns off if you install 3rd party anti virus so you wouldnt be running both.

Or you could just unplug the display port from your Surface Pro.

BAM!

Too funny

I read one post on here that stated: "Over 30 GB of storage going directly to the OS, who would put up with that crap???"

That's just one of the major problems with this yes.

Ballmer has to go!
Streamlined apps and OS are the order of the day. Not 30GB of operating system. No wonder the battery life is terrible.
As Steve Jobs said at the IPad launch, net books are good for nothing. This is basically a netbook hidden in a tablet format.
Serious work can't be done here as it is not powerful enough as a PC.
And as a tablet, it has been compromised.

On the iPad I can use VNC or Remote Desktop to connect to a running machine at home or work if I need access to "full" software. However the times that I need full software when on the road are becoming less and less.
Seriously how much work could you get done on a 10" laptop screen?
I will happily keep my 27" IMac and separate IPad for now!!

But the art style does not look good on Windows 8 UI.

And I'll disagree with you again. The start screen is sorta plan, but well designed Metro apps are both awesome looking and easy to navigate through.

Like the original Zune Marketplace...

It's the prime example of how Metro should look on both a desktop and a tablet. A helluva lot better than that Xbox Music crap we've got now.

In the right hands (which isn't always MS' it seems), it can look great.

Probably about as much as you can get done on the 11" MBA.

Lol

"Of the 64g SSD, only 30g is available to the user".

If they could have just kept the install to 30g I'd be ok. However, 34g is over the top. ;)

Can't be a Notebook and Tablet at the same time. Under 4hrs Battery on 100%. Nice.

Great built in Kick Stand to keep it upright though. :)

I'll Pass. :apple:

You realise most updates simply replace files, yes? Granted, sometimes they can be a few kb or even a couple of mb larger, in other cases they can be smaller, but no different to Apple's OS X updates.

Well, that is not my experience with a Windows desktop. Everytime an update happens to my computer it surely eats up some space. Try installing Windows from scratch and run the Windows updates afterwards. Let me know what you see.

Microsoft definitely is getting into the market before it has fully matured; however it is introducing a fairly novel concept that distinguishes it from the competition. I think this will pay dividends when the Surface 2 comes out. One must admit the first iPad was kind of half baked as well.

I'm on the iPad 1 right now. Half baked I think not.
