Sucks man, I am OCD about things like this. I hate using anything new because I don't want it to get scratched/dirty etc. The struggle is real...

Thread resurrection: my MBP 13" 2016 was charging on the (stone) floor, I didn't notice it and sort of kicked it, it slid a good distance and the bottom got scratched to hell. :( I had managed to keep the thing pristine so far so feeling pretty devastated.

The bottom casing should be replaceable, right? Is it strictly DIY only, or could an authorized repair shop do it? I would be paying for the privilege, of course.

The bottom is replaceable, just hope you did not make scratches on the bottom part of the top case, that would be expensive.
Where to get a new one I am not sure, in the past I got one on eBay, but apple should be able to sell you one (including the fees for repair

Speaking as someone with serious OCD about things being perfect, don't rush in to spend money replacing it.

Live with it for a while.

How visible is it during use? What first-aid can you give it. When I scratched the top of my TB MacBook, the scratch seems to heal itself fairly quickly.

I recently dropped my iPhone 8. The screen was fine. A few days later I noticed a couple of small nicks in the aluminium casing. To my surprise I wasn't that bothered.

Screen damage is a deal-breaker for me. Visible case damage — that you can't help but see during regular use — is upsetting. But damage you have to actively look for to see . . . well, I can live with that.

heres the picture of the scratch...

Sucks. Same exact chip just happened to my barely-a-week-old 2018 MBP. And it's right where my hand keeps touching it and reminding me about it. Super annoyed but I'm trying to be Zen about it.

That's it. Though it's always painful accepting that first scratch. See your machine as being built for this sort of thing, to take it in it's stride. Don't be one of those guys with the really nice car who has to do stupid things like park at the back of the place to protect it.. take life full on and worry about more important things like people and kindness :p

Thanks for making me feel better about it. Love your advice here. BTW, when I got a new car a couple years ago, I totally did park at the back of the lot to protect it, lol. I am that guy. :p

It didn’t come like that? I had one 2018 MBP that came with a few nicks like that along the left hand side near the speaker grille, right out of the box

Pretty sure mine didn't come like that. I am confident that my OCD would've notified me right away, lol.

Lol, I am that guy too, I love cars, and I've had my car for 3 years still park it in the back. People don't always respect that some of us care about our stuff, and try to take care of it. I hate door dings that I didn't create myself...

But as far as a MacBook goes, as much as I baby mine, in the end I agree with the advice that crap happens, and in the end, its just a device, not a piece of jewelry, even if it costs as much as a wedding ring. LOL. Use it and enjoy it, in the end you'll be trading it in after enough years of use.

Don’t you hate it when you park a brand new car in the back in some remote area and some twit parks right next to you? Not one of the other remote areas or not even a space or two between in the same remote area, but right next to you even though there are dozens of other empty spots. Wtf? Hahaha

Hahaha! I hate it! It's just like, "Did you seriously have to do that??" I actually had someone park against my truck bumper years ago at a hardware parking lot, and I was literally like at least 8 spaces away from all the other cars. And I had had my truck for less than a month.

My iPhone, Mac and Watch all have dings in the corner or screen.

It's actually a relief when you first crash your device into a wall for the first time. Then you stop caring.

My watch is pretty beat up as well. I don't take it off much, working on the car or motorcycle, yard work, whatever. It is on my wrist and taking abuse. I have some pretty good scratches along the left side, but it looks lived in :)

Do people think your vehicle looks lonely all the way out there by itself and is in need of a friend? I don't get it hahaha

I have the same on my watch I just got recently. Its really hard to avoid getting even simple hairline scratches on it, and I refuse to use a screen protector on a watch that will scratch and peel and look worse than the screen by itself.

In the end its a wearable device, nothing you can really do about it.

Now my iPhone X is a different story. At $1200 you better believe that has a case and screen protector on it.

My GF laughs every time it happens, and she says its probably a sub-conscious move thing that people think since my car is nice and well kept, that their car is more protected. But I say they can go find own spot away from my car (that's not mean, right??) :)

Perhaps, I need to design a collapsible bubble wrap to put around my car... now that would be some useful innovation :D

Yup, the phone I protect with a screen protector and a good case. The watch I figure is out there on my wrist, it is going to get abuse and I am not willing to go this route..

ive somehow managed to get my first scratch on my 2017 macbook pro : (

its a really small nick but its still noticable.

what are your expiriences dealing with scratches on your new machines?

ignore it and get on with your life...Seriously, flash forward ten years and ask yourself, was it really that big of a deal? Uh, no.
