i'm not sure why everyone was raving about ted lasso. it was mid-tier at best IMO. Tehran is so far my favorite though. Gave me 24/Homeland vibes.
Season one was fantastic. They actually had a story to tell and it got me right in the heartstrings.

Season two is just one long virtue signal with a few lame jokes thrown in. Nothing there worth watching.

I hope this helps more people subscribe bc imo this is a fantastic service. Unlike other services, I don't feel like I am being smothered by so much content just hoping something would stick. Apple, so far, remains smaller but with actual quality content. I look forward to see what is to come.

Side note --IMO Ted Lasso is such a feel good show and Mythic Quest & Acapulco both deserve more love.

I really wanted to like Mythic Quest. Tried twice to start it, couldn’t get past the second episode. It just wasn’t interesting to me.

Severance is actually fantastic.

I do like their approach, it’s like HBO was before AT&T tried to drive it into the ground.

Still, I don’t think there’s enough content to justify subscribing for a full year.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

The streaming market is crowded and Apple wants people to pay for an anaemic service where every programme has to be about promoting Apple's 'core values.'
I don't understand the false narrative that Apple + shows are somehow handcuffed with morals/clean/wholesome. They most certainly ARE NOT. There is nudity, foul language, sex, extreme violence in many of their offerings. That narrative is getting old.

Blindfolded assumption time at MR. Which core values do you think are represented by Ted Lasso, See and for all mankind?

They aren’t yet as severe as Netflix, where you literally cannot make a show unless their director of inclusivity decides it’s political enough. I’m not making this up, look it up.

I haven’t seen See or For All Mankind, but I know the second season of Ted Lasso was unwatchable. There was no more story. All that season was about is that women are better than men. Especially if they are older, younger, or a different color than Ted Lasso.

At this point it’s basically like devout Christians who refuse to watch anything without a Christian message. I have no problem with any of that, but I don’t need it inserted into every single thing I watch.

Again, Apple is not there yet with every show like Netflix is.

Seems like at some point they might start making people actually pay for the service. 😀

They don't have the huevos to do that yet.
Apple have the data -- there's a reason we keep seeing so many ways to watch for free.

The critical mass isn't there and the whole thing would die on the vine (without endless subsidization) if they tried to lock it down and get only paying folks watching any of it.

Me either

It solidified for me that I’m apparently far out of step with mainstream interests.

I very rarely am swept up by any show that is getting endless praise
Same even with some movies. I always wonder if it is because it gets so hyped, so if I just think it is ok, it makes it seem even worse.

Doesn't it seem like this is the root of so much disappointment now?

Things of actual quality, variety or unique and diverse interest never seem to get the "pub" and "push" from all the sources just trying to extract easy money from wallets.

It's so disheartening

Yes is there anything adult live action that is still family friendly?

The other thing that bugs me is you have to be on guard of spoilers well before a movie releases today

Sadly, Apple TV+ has basically no content compared to other streaming services.
You mean Apple TV+ has no content that appeals to you compared to other streaming services.

If you had said that Apple TV+ has less interesting content (due to smaller library of content in general), then I'd agree with you. When I had the free 1 year trial of Apple TV+, I rarely used the service as I didn't find much worth watching, but of the shows and movies that I did watch, I enjoyed them.

- The Morning Show
- Greyhound
- On the Rocks
- Finch
- See
- Amazing Stories

Recently took advantage of another free trial to finish "See" and will check out "Ted Lasso" to see what the big deal is about the show.

Me as well. I couldn't get into that show at all. I guess my lack of interest in anything related to pro sports had something to do with it. Every time they make a movie or TV show with that theme, about some coach or "star player", I'm like "Nah.... lost my interest."

I'm just spitballing...perhaps it's because different people have different movie tastes?

As an aside... I like Ted Lasso and Tehran. Tehran feels very authentic.

I think this is a better strategy for Apple than a blanket free trial. Just make the first season/first few episodes free and people who like the shows will sign up. With free trials I almost always forget to try it out since there was nothing I wanted to watch when I first signed up.

I agree. It lets people go at their own pace, too. That's my problem with free trials. You only have X number of days to make a decision and often times you need more time. Removing the time pressure lets people find and get into a show at their own pace. I think that lack of pressure will actually make people more likely to subscribe.

I really enjoyed season 1 of Ted Lasso. It wasn't amazing, but it was fun, good characters, a classic underdog story, etc. Season 2 lost me about halfway. I also liked Tehran. I enjoyed the first season more. Neither season comes close to Fauda on Netflix, though. That's my opinion of Apple shows in general. I've enjoyed some of them, but even the ones I've enjoyed most seem weak compared to shows of a similar genre on other services.

To be fair, Apple TV+ at $4.99/month is pretty cheap compared to everything else. Given the limited amount of content, I think they are pricing it quite fairly.

As for "core values", I hear that a lot but I wonder if people who parrot that sentiment have ever watched an Apple TV show. To me this critique essentially translates to I only want to see white straight people on the screen. When I consider all of the Apple TV shows I've watched, I don't see any common "core values" on display. I don't see Apple pushing any kind of agenda across their programming. I do see better representation of previously marginalized groups, something I fully support.

Apple TV+ has been a surprising quality service. I may not like everything on it, but rarely is it poorly produced, acted, or written. The Morning Show was one that I didn't expect to like, but watched season 1 and was done before I realized it. Ted Lasso season 1 was awesome, but I can see how not everyone would like it. Actually, I am surprised as many liked it as apparently did.

Totally agree. Apple execs are doing a great job snagging excellent series.

Loved Ted Lasso; especially the last episodes of Season 2.

I always recommend Severance to my friends, and everyone who has watched it really enjoys it, without exception. I hope the second season comes out soon!

Also their so called “best shows” are mediocre compared to best ones across all playforms

That's why they got an Oscar for CODA, 14 Emmy wins, "was recognized as the most-winning streaming service by the Hollywood Critics Association"

Season two is just one long virtue signal with a few lame jokes thrown in. Nothing there worth watching.

Season 2 emphasized comedy less and had more serious content than season one. How many shows are there out there dealing with mental illness?

I do like their approach, it’s like HBO was before AT&T tried to drive it into the ground.

In terms of production quality, and some of the shows, it may replace HBO as the highest quality steaming service. HBO still does have some good ones - Hacks, His Dark Materials, but AT&T got rid of Richard Piepler (Game of Thrones) who is now at Apple.

As with most services there are exceptional shows and some not so.

Totally agree. I tried to get my (admittedly less nerdy than me) family to watch Mythic Quest but couldn't convince them. I however thought it had moments of brilliance. Especially the way they handled the Covid season. Foundation also blew me away

I feel that, for the price, they have "just enough" content and the quality is very high. And it's a no brainer as part of an Apple One subscription. I watched all these (plus a couple of other items I'm forgetting), and none of it was bad:

Ted Lasso
Mythic Quest
Foundation
For All Mankind
Slow Horses
Severance
Bad Sisters
The Morning Show
Problem With Jon Stewart
MLB
Greyhound
CODA
Spirited (I'm not into XMas movies but the choreography was amazing)
