I hope that they can keep this up and that Apple can’t do anything about it. This whole Trim debacle with Yosemite makes me very angry.

Apple needs to add the device strings for the popular third party drives into their ahci stack - I've already sent a feedback request and I suggest everyone else does as fair use and lawsuit are inevitable otherwise. Same too for kext restrictions on genuine Apple part upgrades restricted to certain models like the handoff hacks..

I believe kext restrictions is a very sensible move by Apple to lock down OS X but they need to let the enthusiasts and long term owners back into that walled garden they have created that is signed drivers, particularly for boot and usb storage. Anyone who has experience of Windows rootkits and the problems that nasty bit of malware does to systems will know exactly why it's a good idea.

Let us all back in Apple - or be sued!

While all of that is true, and I'll second the Samsung recommendation (but make sure you get the firmware update for the EVO that was just released!) ...

It pisses me off to no end that Apple doesn't support TRIM on third-party drives. Windows 7/8 universally supports TRIM, Linux universally supports TRIM. Why doesn't OS X? It's like their lack of AHCI support when you're using Bootcamp (or anything that doesn't boot into EFI). There's just no reason for it other than to go out of their way to gimp performance when something is not 100% Apple.

If I had to guess, it's because Apple is a software company that sells hardware. They are in the businees of making great software and to do that, they have to tightly control the hardware it's run on.

Plus they, like a lot of folks, like money. Lots and lots of money.

I think it is the reverse - Apple makes its money on hardware. Apple's pro software apps have been diminished and the reality is that Apple is locking quite a bit down on their own hardware and apps.

Microsoft is a software company and wants to run on everything. That is why they got huge. Apple is deep into hardware from the get go. I'll spare others the boring history as it is pretty well known.

Probably money... yea it is because of money.

I wonder why Apple allows you to disable kext in the first place ? . or something.

Samsung is the best consumer SSD brand and has been for the last 3 years. If you've got the money, go for the 850 Pro otherwise 840 Evo is still better than the other brands. Don't worry about trim; you can use trim enabler for that and these drives have excellent garbage collection management regardless.

I found this!

The 1TB is what I am looking for and the price is not bad!

Who cares whether it works or not. Who would buy an SSD from a unknown brand, Angelbird? To be honest, maybe they are the best thing somewhere else in the world, but having never heard of them before, I would not be trusting my data to it. AND, it's SANDFORCE! Two strikes!

Heh, funny. Just as I guessed:

While I don’t know for certain, I am pretty sure that these SSD’s are fooling the Apple Trim driver by identifying themselves as APPLE SSD’s. If so, it is quite a bold move by Angelbird, seeing as Apple could change this mechanism, essentially leaving Angelbird’s customers with a product that does not work as advertised.

Just use Trim Enabler.

This is the same company with a flagship PCIe SSD card featuring SATA II speeds of 3GB/s, lol.

Obviously you didn't rtfa...Trim Enabler apparently doesn't work in Yosemite.

Also, as a few others have pointed out. Most modern SSDs from trustworthy manufacturers (Samsung, OWC, and a few others) have controllers that do their own garbage collection and other maintenance items, making TRIM support irrelevant.

Errm it does though signed drivers have to be disabled. Cindori the developer of Trim Enabler has posted just before you :D

Not heard of TRIM before, how does this affect a 3 year old MBP 15?

I'm saving to put in a SSD and more RAM to give it more life, which make of SSD should I now get to use TRIM?

I installed a crucial MX100 512GB in a mac mini and it only took a press of a button with trim enabler to enable trim, what's the big deal with pressing a button, especially when it saves you $90 over the anglebird.. The mx is faster than my 2013rmbp.
