Every year since the iPhone 3G first brought the iPhone to Australia in 2008 I’ve opened the box of a new phone on launch day. But you know what I’m seriously thinking about skipping the iPhone 13 … maybe I’m getting older but more to do with the fact that many of the features on the iPhone 12 Pro have barely been used. I thought LiDAR was a cool addition but haven’t used it. My telco has only a very small 5G footprint. Camera improvements I’ve used without realising.

Maybe 2021 is the year I don’t pick up the new phone. Is anyone else feeling the same way?

I am in same boat , will be skipping this year. I might upgrade watch though, as long as it supports 5G :)

Sure…since 2013 when I skipped the iPhone 5s and stayed with my iPhone 5. Which is why I waited until 2015 to buy a iPhone 6+, then later in the year to get a 6s+. Same reason I waited until 2019 to get a Pixel 3a XL and then waited until 2021 to get an iPhone 11 Pro Max (yes, the 11PM, not a 12, shocker, huh?!).

But that's just iPhones (with an Android in the mix). Before iPhone…same feeling.

It's not a new thing, this feeling of not updating every year. :)

The iPhone 13 really isn't intended for those who have a iPhone 12 or 11 (or maybe even a lot older).
Apple will make a new iPhone every year no matter what. It's up to each person to decide when to replace their -old- phone & get a new one.

I'm thinking the same. I sold my 12 Mini a few days ago to get the best price before the influx of people selling theirs and the inevitable price drop, but I may go back to the 12 Mini depending on Tuesday's announcements. Like you I've had the latest model each year (either at launch or within a few months) going back as far as the 4S. This may be the first year I skip completely, or wait until this time next year and pick up a cheaper 13 Mini.

The only way I'll go for the 13 Mini this month is if battery life is considerably improved (an extra couple of hours battery life at least), or they announce some new feature that is exclusive to the 13 that I really like the sound of. If it's essentially just what the leaks have rumoured then it's just not worth the extra £300+ it's going to cost me to upgrade and I could pick up a bargain 12 Mini at a higher storage capacity.

Just came here to start the same thread. I have had every single iteration since iPhone1. I'm thinking my 12 Pro Max will do the trick for another year. Maybe I'm getting older too.

That being said I haven't seen the 13 yet and that new black might just sway me lol. I feel like those on this forum don't have a lot of willpower when it comes to Apple products :)

The closer we get to the event the more solidified I have become in my decision to keep my 12 Pro. I really like how my black leather case has broken in and the thought of having to start over is enough to keep me in place for a while. I've been completely indifferent when it comes to the notch so that being reduced isn't a selling point for me. Same with the higher refresh rate; I've been using iPhones since I last tried Android with the Galaxy S5 so don't really know what I'm missing there. My battery has been more than sufficient and I'm only using 20 of the 128GB I have so there really isn't much reason for me to upgrade based on the rumors/leaks so far.

I stopped buying new iterations with the iPhone 6. I went from 6 to X which was a huge upgrade. So far my X is still going strong and the new phones don't do anything special. The 13 may tip me over with 120hz but even then I doubt it. I will probably wait until there's no notch.

I'm actually pretty excited because I'm the opposite: the last time I had the top-of-the-line phone with the 4S. Since then I've had the 5c, the SE and the SE. I did buy each of them as soon as they came out, but none of them was the top offering. So I'm considering springing for the 13 Pro, it will be the first time in ten years I've had the top model!

I was on a 2 year upgrade cycle (4S, 5S, 6S, X) but haven't seen a need to replace the X after almost 4 years. My battery is definitely in need of replacement but I'll wait to see if the 13 Pro Max interests me as I think I'm ready for a larger device. If not, battery replacement and wait to see what the 14 series offers, I'm in no hurry

I always skip a year or two. Started with a 3S > 4S > 5S > 6S Plus > 8 Plus > XS Plus.

So I skipped the 11 and 12 and will probably skip the 13 too.

Will echo others: skipping.

I've been on an every three year replacement schedule. That resulted me getting the SE last year.

Not a fan of the phablets. The X now non-pro 12 never wowed me. Don't need OLED or high refresh rate to read email when out of the house. Don't play games, watch videos on the phone. Not doing anything that taxes the processors. 5G is not important (LTE working just fine for me). Throw in price tag for stuff I don't need/want and possible price hike this year, easy decision.

Now, if I stick to schedule, 15 will be the next upgrade point: depending on the line-up, might change up my upgrade cycle to every 4-5 years, with battery replacement(s) along the way.

While none of the rumored specs of the iPhone 13 make me think it'll be a *huge* improvement (I currently have an 11), I'm using at as a chance to move to the pro model... this is the year we're getting our oldest a phone, so he'll inherit my 11 and I'll be picking up the iPhone Pro 13. This will actually be the shortest I've ever owned an iPhone as I generally only upgrade every 3 or 4 years.

My iPhone 12 serves me very well. I to have seen no need to upgrade each and every year or even two years. Camera works fine, texting is the same, email the same, phone calls the same and occasional YouTube video the same, so why bother. The 13 isn’t going to give me anything earth.

Depends.

If carriers offer a similar free with trade-in deal for the iPhone 13, we'll probably trade-in an iPhone 11 to get an iPhone 13 with MagSafe support. On the 12, we've found it to be a pretty convenient way to mount and charge in the car.

I find it surprising people are just now realizing they don’t need to upgrade their phone every year. Looking back I’ve only had the 4, 6S and XS lolol and I have no interest in the 13. I’ll be getting the 14 either way though. If I didn’t get a big discount on the XS I’m 99.9% sure I’d still be using the 6s.

If this is of any reference I also have AirPods Pro(had original AirPods), 1st iPad Pro(had previous iPad), M1 MacBook Air(had previous MacBooks), Apple Watch 6(had AW 3) and newest 4K Apple TV(had non 4K) so it’s not like I’m out of the loop or living in the past at all. This is on top of a home full of Airplay speakers and homekit accessories.

No one needs a new iPhone every year.

Common sense isn’t really that common!

Personally I don’t think you see much difference if you upgrade every single year. I’ll be upgrading from the 11 Pro to a 13 Pro and cannot wait!

I'm still on my first smartphone, the 5s, and it continues to be pretty solid. They never seem to add anything I really wanted, only subtracted, so each year I held off until next year.

With the upcoming shutdown of 3G I will have to upgrade, and I am at least looking forward to the camera advancements. We'll see how much of a difference there is day-to-day otherwise.

That's pretty darn impressive. You've really gotten you're money's worth out of a 5s...
