You're surprised you can't watch videos or read texts on it?
You know that in a car you're supposed to be watching the road and not videos or reading messages?

People already do it on their phones, I guess it would be easier to do it on a bigger screen. After all, we have to have safety in mind. It is probably safer that they watch videos & read texts on a bigger screen than on the tiny one on their phone.

Glad that there are more car manufacturers jumping on this technology, but personally, I am not a big fan of VW's in general.

Uh...that is the point. I may be wrong, but I think it is illegal for a video to be playing on the front dash while the car is in motion.

I dont know i any countries have that "law".. I just think it would be nice for the passengers.

Based on my own use, CarPlay doesn't interest me b/c it requires a hard cable or dock hook up. It's too much of a hassle to have to plug my phone in every time I get in my car then remember to unhook when I arrive at my destination. I have 99% of CarPlay's features in my car now and don't have to unhook anything.

Maybe if Carplay goes wireless but then you have to worry about battery drain. So for me it's a no-go.

On a side note, I do have Siri Eyes Free in my car, which does work with my car's bluetooth. I like it and use it. But crazy thing is if I ask to "start Shazam" or "open Shazam" Siri scolds me "I can't do that while you are driving." BUT if I then pull my phone out while driving, unlock my phone and then ask Siri to "open Shazam" no problem. WTF? How is that safer than me just pressing the voice button on my steering wheel?

It is illegal in almost all states to have any video running in the nav or driver's info panel while the car is in motion. This only extends to what the driver can see. The front passenger can have a private screen as long as it's not in the drivers view.

I have a text app on my radio, but cant read text from it.. Yes im surprised! I can get siri to read it to me tho...

Video is just something i wish was there. You can get it in the Columbus radio for the Skoda and you get it in most other top range radios (at least in the VAG family)

Thanks for info.

I live in Europe and havent heard about a law like that here..

Get Japan car if you want a realy good car (in meaning of electronics design). VW (and Audi) had always big problems even with in-doors red-lights, rear wipers and other small things. You can still drive, but in details something is always out of order (in electronic-based elements mainly).
I've owned Audi since 1984, I can count electrical issues on one finger and that was a faulty rear light 8 years ago. Present Audi has more bells and whistles than I care for but they all work fine.

Name one company that doesn't manufacture without a lemon once in a while.

Illegal? Really?

As understood, the city/state laws talk about distracted driver, and it's relying on the law officer (police) to determine based on their judgement if the driver is distracted or not.
So if the video is running but the driver is not distracted with it, and the police officer doesn't consider it a hazard is not illegal...

I just installed a Car Play-enabled Pioneer AVIC 5000nex in our aging Honda Odyssey over the weekend. It's awesome if for just one thing: It replaces the horrible UI that most aftermarket stereos come with with something people are already used to using. And by people I mean my wife. I installed a cheaper, non-Car Play unit a few months ago (also a Pioneer) and its UI ended up being more of a distraction than the non-BT, non-iPhone-compatible factory unit ever was. Granted, getting a refurb off eBay helped the cause.

I drive a 2012 VW GTI, and its UI is decent. Great for phone calls, okay for music integration. You don't want to be searching for songs while driving, but I’m not sure anyone has cracked that nut. If I'm ever able to get a Golf R, I'm glad it'll have Car Play. Although if I'm ever able to get a Golf R, I'd probably just get a used Cayman.

I installed the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX head unit in my F150. I used CarPlay for about two weeks before I turned it off. If you need to use your phone for anything, it will come up to the CarPlay logo, then you put in your 4 digit code or thumbprint, then it shows the CarPlay logo again so you have to hit the home button. I don't want to jump through all that just to get into my phone. Also, the orientation on my iPhone always loads in landscape mode when it's hooked into CarPlay. It's not as easy to navigate your music either (although this may the fault of Pioneer). And I couldn't figure out how to make it always shuffle my music when I would plug in my iPhone. It would always start with the song that started with the letter A. Let me tell you how much I started to hate Santana's A-1 Funk! haha. Anyway, I love the idea of CarPlay and it's the reason I chose this head unit. For now, I have turned it off and just plug in my iPhone and it picks up right where I left off the last time I was playing music. I trust that things will get better down the road. I also like that these new head units are flash up-gradable so that gives me hope that Pioneer can make changes to if needed.

Also, I really wanted to use Waze with this headunit.... not a fan of Apple Maps.

Edit: If anyone else is considering this head unit.... it has 6 volt preouts for everything. Totally different sound from my speakers. I guess in a way I'm actually glad my old Pioneer was stolen. Put this head unit in and it's like I got brand new everything. I guess I had been starving my amps for power or something. Best sounding head unit I have ever owned.

for my first car ever that was not a SAAB and PS i would still own one if GM didn't screw that brand up and run it in to the ground,,,,,, But loving the MPG on my 2013 Jetta TDi other then that I'm not impressed with the brand i need more think I'm gonna wait for an Audi with car play for my next car

I like the idea behind carplay, but the implementation just sucks. Why can't it just work like airplay and any app can send the UI to the car? This has become yet another category where either Apple or Google are in control, with no chance for a smaller developer to get involved. I'm sick of everything useful having to be either an Apple or Google product.
Handsfree is the reason why. If we are air playing from our phones, then that defeats the purpose. It would be nice to be able to have more handsfree versions of our favorite apps that were designed for the CarPlay interface, but if we are all pulling our phones out to beam apps to the dash, more accidents will occur.

Video restrictions by state:

Carplay has potential, but apple restricts the applications too much. For example, you cant search for music in Spotify, so you need to make a list with the music you want to stream or add it to My music.. Its the same with the Apple Music app.
There is still no video applications, which would be nice for the passenger.
I cant read texts, only get siri to read them for me.
and so on..

It just doesnt seem ready yet.

All the things you listed show that CarPlay is right on the mark. CarPlay is meant to reduce driver distraction. Period. Searching for music, reading texts, watching video, etc. are all things you SHOULD NOT be doing while driving.

People shouldn't be doing that. I'm all for Apple trying to curb dangerous distractions, rather than adding to them.

I've never been in a car with a driver doing these things, nor do I do them myself. Some people eh.

I agree. Sling everything on iPhone to the screen.

$200 per year is really steep for such simple wireless features. It's all really low data usage and most features would only rarely be used if ever. $15 per year sounds more appropriate.

As for Carplay it sounds neat. But will you have to replace your car stereo every three or four years to maintain compatibility?
I agree with your position on fees. At $200 per year that's excessive.

As far as compatibility, it's my understanding that you only have to replace the entire unit once a year, at a very modest price of $3200 USD.
