I installed the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX head unit in my F150. I used CarPlay for about two weeks before I turned it off. If you need to use your phone for anything, it will come up to the CarPlay logo, then you put in your 4 digit code or thumbprint, then it shows the CarPlay logo again so you have to hit the home button...

You need to set your phone to allow Car Play while locked.

"The 2017 VW Golf SportWagen Alltrack TDI, with CarPlay, will be pretty tempting..."

You hit the nail on the head!

I've owned Audi since 1984, I can count electrical issues on one finger and that was a faulty rear light 8 years ago. Present Audi has more bells and whistles than I care for but they all work fine.

Name one company that doesn't manufacture without a lemon once in a while.

True, but there is a reason why quality report generally have Japanese cars (Toyota, Honda) having less faults per 100 vehicles than European and American cars (of course this changes all the time).

I switched to BMW and was shocked at the quality compared to my Japanese cars (which like your experience with Audi didn't have any issues with). We all have bad experiences so my experience means nothing, but I willfully ignored the quality reports. Buyer be ware I guess but damn it, it's frustrating!

Anyways.. car play! excited for better car interface! I hate my bmw interface, just horrible

Now if Google would add Maps support to Carplay, it would be awesome.

It looks like VW is the first OEM to really push CarPlay across their lineup quite fast

Well, let's assume you get the headunit and take the engineering effort to add a Carplay button to the steering wheel and make sure all CAN messages are properly understood by the system, in order to have your car function as before. How are you gonna enable the features on the headunit? Just changing something via diagnosis bus won't work anymore. Newer features are protected by cryptographic protocols. Times have changed.
That's incorrect. MIB 2 will be a quick and simple upgrade to MIB1 cars, provided they replace the screen and the CPU.

VW's have long been backwards compatible. You've always been able to upgrade the old crap VW NAV unit from the MK5/6 to RNS310 or RNS510 quite easily. All it required was some coding with a VAG COM.

However, the RNS compatible cars probably won't be compatible with the MIB system.

The 2017 VW Golf SportWagen Alltrack TDI, with CarPlay, will be pretty tempting...
We aren't getting the Alltrak or even the regular GSW TDI with 4Motion in the US. The MQB chassis with AWD can't fit the AdBlue required for diesel cars, therefore even VW confirmed that the TDIs will only be FWD.

That being said, it's not a big issue. The EA888 1.8T is a fantastic engine and gets great gas mileage.

If there was an Alltrak TDI coming to the US, I would've put a deposit down ASAP.

I don't want a touchscreen in my car. Physical buttons and dials are better, because you don't need to look at them whilst driving.

As such, I'm afraid that CarPlay doesn't tickle my fancy. There are quite enough touch screens in the world without another one glaring at me in the car. It's also a good reason for not wanting an Apple Watch with its tiny screen glaring at you.

I hope I have made my disdain for too many touchscreens clear.

thats not the only thing you've made clear to us...

If only cars had even half decent touch screens. We're used to iPads and iPhones, high resolution and responsive. What do car manufacturers give us? 5-inch resistive 400x240 resolution slow screens that only respond to brute force touch...

CarPlay works fine with the Phone locked. I'm saying that if I need to use my phone for whatever reason while I am plugged into the head unit with CarPlay activated, I have to jump through all that just to get to my home screen. If I turn off CarPlay and just plug directly into the headunit and go to use my phone... it's unlocked instantly with my thumbprint and I'm at the home screen.

But doesn't the platform also ship with android too?
So its not like VW is going with apple at all, its going open and you can run whatever.

Current VW's with the bluetooth option already have the button that invokes the voice prompt that would invoke carplay on this head unit. CAN is a standard and it already knows how to understand it. There is already someone with the new headunit installed in a 2012 Golf.

I don't want to jump through all that just to get into my phone. Also, the orientation on my iPhone always loads in landscape mode when it's hooked into CarPlay. It's not as easy to navigate your music either (although this may the fault of Pioneer). And I couldn't figure out how to make it always shuffle my music when I would plug in my iPhone. It would always start with the song that started with the letter A. Let me tell you how much I started to hate Santana's A-1 Funk! haha. Anyway, I love the idea of CarPlay and it's the reason I chose this head unit. For now, I have turned it off and just plug in my iPhone and it picks up right where I left off the last time I was playing music. I trust that things will get better down the road. I also like that these new head units are flash up-gradable so that gives me hope that Pioneer can make changes to if needed.

Also, I really wanted to use Waze with this headunit.... not a fan of Apple Maps.

Edit: If anyone else is considering this head unit.... it has 6 volt preouts for everything. Totally different sound from my speakers. I guess in a way I'm actually glad my old Pioneer was stolen. Put this head unit in and it's like I got brand new everything. I guess I had been starving my amps for power or something. Best sounding head unit I have ever owned.

Curious - did you install it yourself or have someone do it? I dont have issues shuffling music and only have to "unlock" once for Carplay. Phone orientation doesnt change either.
But I did pay someone to do it so I was curious about your situation. I love mine. And using Appradio mode I can use offline maps (not Waze though). My Golf did not have anything fancy so this was a huge upgrade for me.

Put $2500 down today on a 2016 Golf R with MIB II. Very excited! It'll be replacing this beauty in about 6 weeks:

Excited to get Car Play in my vehicle along with the many more features. The HP, Torque and MPG increases are going to be huge. I drive 20K miles a year and 23MPG average to 31 MPG is going to be pretty awesome not to mention 40 more HP and faster ships with dual-clutch transmission.

I went for Blue or Red (whichever gets built faster) with DCC, Nav and the Drivers Assistance Package because I've driven cars with Adaptive Cruise Control before and it's really awesome. I spend 80% of my miles on very empty Interstates like this one: (I-89/I-91, NH/VT)

Cruise control that auto slows when there's a car ahead of me is going to be awesome. the most thing I do on these roads is enable and disable cruise. Auto headlights, wipers, auto-dimming mirror and the power...oh man, so stoked!

It's across most models, Beetle's there, only £100 also so not too hard to swallow, now if VW would only get to putting it in a Skoda, (tell a lie just checked, Skoda has MIB2 also, an expensive month it'll turn out to be!)

AirPlay on a Skoda probably doubled its price.

It was installed by a shop since insurance was paying for it. It's not that I have to unlock it twice, it shows that CarPlay logo twice. So I go to use my phone, and I press the home screen button to wake it up. The CarPlay logo is onscreen. I unlock it and then it shows the CarPlay logo screen again so I have to press the home button again to get to my apps. It's just an annoyance. The landscape thing might be an issue with my iPhone as I have had random times when i have to turn my iPhone to the side and then vertical again to get it to come out of landscape mode. But when it's hooked into CarPlay it would always be in landscape mode. Strange.

I have a deposit down on a 2016 Golf R. Just waiting to hear when I get that beast. :)))

Too bad about the deposit...the new Focus RS will embarrass the Golf...;)

Seriously though it is neat that we have all these hot hatches to choose from. Can't wait to see some head to head battles between the Focus RS, Golf R, and the WRX STi.

That's doubtful. The ST was supposed to "smoke" the GTI, but it never did. If anything, it will be the same thing again. the Focus will be more edgy and sporty, but lack overall refinement and quality, whereas the Golf will be the better DD.

The Golf has always better a better overall car than the Focus. Higher quality interior, no stupid Sync, higher refinement, better ride, quieter, better residuals, etc.

Could be better refined, but it will most definitely (on paper at least) be faster. It's pushing nearly 350 HP and 350 lb ft torque compared to 297 HP for the Golf and it has the AWD system that should have been on the ST as well. The Golf is also so expensive you could justify spending the money on an Audi, since that's pretty much what it is anyway.

I have to agree, I'd take the focus over the Golf everyday, its just too dull in every sense.
