i personally can not understand why any shooter game would be third person. the controls are just a lot harder to get down than in first person. you have to worry about the camera angles and aiming is more difficult, etc

simply put, i find it unenjoyable yet wish games like Gears of War was a fps

to me, third person works only in a mario type genre

    what are your thoughts?

I think that the Jedi Knight games are the absolutely perfect case study in where first-person versus third-person works. The Thief games also give a good example.

I can't stand to play 3rd-person shooters. Some games are good in 3rd-person, but most aren't. The Splinter Cell series, for example, is fantastic. Likely the best 3rd-person shooter game. But titles like COD4 just don't work. Any real shooter game will be in 1st person.

I like 3rd person for adventure games (like Tomb Raider), but most of the time if a game can be done in the 1st person then it should be. GoW is a perfect example of this, though it would be harder to do all that cover stuff in the first person. Normally you take care of your own cover in first person games, they're not as 'casual' as a 3rd party game.

Jedi Knight worker perfectly with 3rd person view. No camera glitches, and the saber fighting was much better than in first person.

I prefer First Person for Shooters and 3rd person for RPGs. I have not played any shooters lately but for something like UT, First Person is the only way to go. :)

Gears of War was enjoyable for me and a lot of people, even though it was third person. So is SOCOM (but that's console, and this is for computer games). But for the most part TPS are not enjoyable, not because of controls.... but also because of CAMPING (I'll explain). TPS can implement a cover system better than a FPS, but there's a downside to that......

Have you ever played a TPS online? If you have, then you can recall a lot of instances where a player would just stare at a wall. Who needs wallhacks when you got third person?

For games like SOCOM and Gears of War, this isn't much of a problem. SOCOM is more over the shoulder and it won't really help you out much in Gears of War.

I can't stand 3rd person. If i find out the game is 3rd person i wont even rent it.

The only exception, and it's not a true FPS, is Splinter cell. I am a sucker for splinter cell. Only good 3rd person game i have ever played. Altho the 3rd person angle does make it easier to play the game. I think a first person view in the game would be very interesting.

It's impossible for a 3rd person shooter to be a "true FPS". I mean, maybe in a world where 2 and 2 is 5 or something.

I normally prefer first person, but Gears of War was such an excellent game and I think a large part of it was thanks to how well the third person camera system worked.

going back a few years, there was an entertaining game called Heavy Metal 2000. It was a third person shooter and fun. It had a lot of auto targeting but had a great melee/gun combos. Don't watch the movie though.

I don't mind 3rd Person in adventure games where the emphasis isn't wholly on guns, more interactive with your environment, but regularly, 1st person it is.

    Are We Forgetting Max Payne?

Seriously, in my opinion, one of the best shooting games ( first, third, whatever......) released - the bullet time shoot dodges and weapon reloads would not really be possible in a first person shooter, or quite as cinematic.
I just hope Fox will not screw up the film when its released!

I prefer first person overall. I'm hoping games like Mirror's Edge will inspire a new generation of games. I've always asked why I couldn't see my character's feet, let alone their body.

Cover Fire.. BLAH. It's a crutch for thumb-sticks. It makes games too easy.

Ah yes Oni. Good game. I played it on PS2.

I like the metal gear method of mixing 1st person and 3rd person (admittedly I haven't played the most recent one because I am broke). It was often useful to go into 1st person for the shooting, but sneaking around required 3rd person really.

agreed, its always been perfect. As long as the shooting views/positions feel natural then it's alright, although most tps games I've played, I usually run into the problem of the game trying to take control over the camera, leaving me oblivious to what's going on.
